Not Ethical, But Thrifty!

Just a quick post for Thursday – or pre-Friday as my friend Ali optimistically calls it.

I haven’t been as dedicated as Lar with the whole ethical-shopping thing, but since I’ve been trying to save up for my next trip to Scotland, I’ve be inadvertently more ethical.

For example? Everything I’m wearing in the photo below is at least a year old except for my phone. Not sure why I didn’t just put the phone down for these photos. . . hmmmmmm. . .

H&M blouse • American Apparel tank • Limited skirt • Dolce Vita shoes • AsianCajuns Name Neckalce

I try to wear my name necklace every chance I get since I know Lar wears her’s a lot in Scotland. As cheesy as it sounds it somehow makes me feel closer to my twinie.

______

Dear Lar,

So I may not be quite as ethical as you in the shopping department, but at least I’m trying to be more conscious about what I’m buying or not buying! And I did buy another pair of TOMs not too long ago. That’s ethical, no?

How often do you wear your name necklace? Sometimes I think it’s too informal for work, but that doesn’t usually stop me!

Oh! And I finally saw Moonrise Kingdom! Loved it. Isn’t the set design amazing?!

Can’t wait for our Skype chat this weekend.

xoxo, Cath

Summertime Layers

Do you remember when Lar wrote about Year Round Layers not too long ago? She made the point that it doesn’t really get warm enough in Edinburgh to not wear layers. The same can’t be said for Atlanta. It gets so hot here that you don’t feel like moving. So while Lar is still shivering every time she ventures outside, I’m sweating non-stop in shorts and a tank. . . unless I’m in the office. I’m cold in my office year round so even when it’s 85+ degrees outside, I still wear outfits like this:

The Webster at Target cardigan • Michael Stars t-shirt • Forever 21 pants • Madewell shoes • thrifted necklace • Michele watch

It seems so counter-intuitive to wear a sweater to work in the middle of the Georgian summer, but the A/C is cranked up so high at the office that I have to pile on the layers – I even wore a scarf today!

I know, I know, first world problems. This is just a long way of explaining why I’m wearing a cardigan in the middle of the summer.

Speaking of summer, anyone going to the Decatur Beach Party this Friday?!

_______

Dear Lar,

I’m so excited that you bought us tickets to go to the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in August – now I just have to make sure to buy my plane ticket ;). What does one wear to the Tattoo? Too bad we don’t have kilts we can wear. We should have our own AsianCajuns tartan – use the colors from our blog and logo! Not at bad idea, no?

Red beans and ricely yours,

Cath xoxo

Hangout With Us Tonight!

For those of you who don’t follow us on Facebook or Google+ or Twitter or Instagram or who haven’t read this blog in the past week, you might not know that we’ll be hosting a Google+ Hangout tonight at 6 p.m. EST. Tonight! Lar will be teaching a tutorial on how to make tissue paper tassels and I’ll be there to look pretty – ha! For details, scroll down past the outfit pics.

Notice how I’ve been wearing my hair up in a bun a lot lately? It’s my I-don’t-feel-like-washing-my-hair-so-I’ll-pull-it-back-in-a-bun look. Perfect second day hairstyle. It reminds me of my ballet days when I had to put my hair in a bun everyday. I did it so often that I started getting a bald spot at the hairline – it was so attractive!

Dress from Squash Blossom Boutique • Urban Outfitters linen trench crop jacket • H&M Belt • Madewell heels • Clare Vivier purse

I wore this outfit out to dinner last week. I know sideways asymmetrical skirts aren’t as popular as the high-hem-in-the-front-low-hem-in-the-back skirts, but I love the edginess it creates in the outfit.

Yes, my nails clashed with my purse, but somehow it worked – or at least it looks like it worked in the photo.

Now, for the details on the Google+ Hangout tonight:

At 6 p.m. EST, Lar will be leading a tutorial on how to make those cute tissue paper tassels she made for her flat in Scotland. Up to 8  readers can “hangout” with us and watch or follow along with the tutorial. If you aren’t in the first 8 or are busy at 6 p.m. tomorrow, you can watch the video later on YouTube or our blog.

For those of you who are new to Google+, here’s some basics:

  • Create a Google+ account
  • Circle up with AsianCajuns on Google+
  • Test out the Hangout function to make sure your camera and audio are working – it works best in Google Chrome of course!
  • A little before 6 p.m. tonight, you’ll receive a notice from us that you’ve been invited to a Hangout. Click on the notification box in the top right-hand corner to start Hanging out with us!

I hope you can join us. If you do, you might get a chance to see Lar do something like this:

______

Dear Lar,

I can’t wait for our Hangout tonight! I feel so high-tech doing something like this!

You’ve been posting such amazing photos of food, that I finally broke down and went to Miso tonight with some friends from school. I’ve been trying to be disciplined about going out to eat and saving for my ticket to come see you, but sometimes I just get a craving for food that I can’t even come close to cooking myself.

I’m currently watching Persausion as I blog – click here for Instagram evidence. Isn’t it such a great film? You need your own copy on DVD in Scotland!

Can’t wait to “see” you at our Hangout!

xoxo, Cath

Getting Crafty in Atlanta

I had a glorious weekend that was equal parts productive and fun. The productive part? My friend and I had a joint yard sale where I got rid of half my bag collection – I really only need five black purses, not ten – and other odds and ends. The fun part? The Atlanta Indie Craft Experience on Sunday:

H&M jumper • Lar’s Bottega Veneta purse • shoes from Shopbop

I.C.E. Atlanta is like a giant Etsy festival – talented crafters as far as the eye can see. This year it was held at Ambient Plus Studio and the Good Food Truck was parked outside so I was able to get my hands on an Island Cone: spicy tamarind cone filled with cold Jamaican jerk sweet potato salad, coconut rice and topped with mango sour cream. Soooo good.

So it was great weekend followed by my first day back at school, ugh. At least there are two huge events to look forward to this week. Lar and I are hosting a Google hangout on Thursday at 6 p.m., so make sure to follow AsianCajuns on Google+ and we’ll give more details soon. The second event is the Style Bloggers of Color Conference/Mattiepalooza this weekend. I can’t wait to see my fellow Atlanta fashion bloggers – they all prove this wrong!

________

Dear Lar,

I wish you could have explored the Indie Craft Experience with me and Alison. You would have been inspired by all the creativity in the room. I bought you a little gift that I’ll be sending you as part of a little birthday package.

It was actually in the 60s on Saturday morning when I was working at the yard sale and I was cold! I think my skin is way too thin for Scottish weather. When I’m come in August, you’ll be the one wearing shorts and I’ll be the one wearing fleece-lined pants and a winter coat.

love you! xoxo, Cath

Look at Me Being Outdoorsy – Kind of

I made fun of Lar for becoming outdoorsy when she moved to Scotland. I mean, look at her hiking pants! Plus, she now has her own pair of walking sticks. Walking Sticks! If that isn’t outdoorsy, I don’t know what is.

But I really need to bite my tongue because when Troy and I went to Denver last week we definitely went hiking – and not just any ol’hiking. We reached 10,000 feet above sea level! Ok, you experienced hikers might have chuckled at that – especially since it was no more than a mile from the parking lot – but that’s HUGE for someone who usually gets out of breath walking to the local Starbucks every morning.

Target scarf • H&M Jacket • Alternative Apparel hoodie • Blank cargoes • old Adidas sneaks

Inspired by Ashley (she’s outdoorsy and fashionable), I tried to be somewhat fashionable when dressing for the hike. I think I only partially succeeded. The good news is that I was relatively comfortable while crunching through the snow in just a hoodie and jacket. I think Troy looked rather dapper for a hiker in his $20 Target rain jacket.

My conclusion? Hiking and being outdoorsy every now and then (like this time Lar and I went camping), isn’t so bad. I might even use Lar’s walking sticks when I visit her in Scotland in August.

_____

Dearest Lar,

Have you used your hiking sticks yet? Any recent excursions to Arthur’s Seat?

It was so bizarre hiking at such a high altitude. I was out of breath before we even started the hike. However, come to think of it, that might have more to do with me being out of shape and less with the altitude.

On a completely unrelated note, do you remember the first time we went to the Atlanta Indie Craft Experience? Our blog was so different back then!

Anywho, the Indie Craft Experience is this weekend and I can’t wait to go:

I’ll make sure to take tons of photos to share with you. I’m on the lookout for some more necklaces (you can never have too many, right?) and a piece of artwork for the bathroom.

There must be some type of I.C.E. equivalent in Edinburgh – especially with the wonderfully Scottish Papa Stour. Let me know if you find anything like it and we’ll add it to the places we’ll visit when I come over in August. Deal?

xoxo, Cath

Yay* For Short Work Weeks!

Ah, nothing like starting the work week on a Tuesday! I hope you all had Monday off and were able to get some downtime. I tried to take advantage of the long weekend by going on a picnic at Stone Mountain (30 Rock didn’t make it up, Stone Mountain, GA really does exist!), perusing the artists stalls at the Decatur Arts Festival, and having family over for a cook out on Monday.

These photos are from two weeks ago, but still applicable since I’m wearing my work uniform that I talk about here. Lisa commented on my last work wear post about how much she likes J. Crew’s No. 2 Pencil Skirts. So when I found myself at a J.Crew outlet last month, I made a beeline for the skirts. Orange is a big step for me since I usually stick with black and gray, but I’m really happy I went for such a cheery color.

Shirt from Squash Blossom Boutique (last year) • necklace from a clothing swap • J.Crew skirt • Aldo heels • TopShop jacket

It’s way too hot for a jacket in Georgia at this time of year (sorry to rub it in, Lar!), but the office is usually so cold that I have to bring some sort of jacket/cardigan/scarf-like item with me everyday. The TopShop jacket is over five years old and still one of my favorites.

___

Dear Lar,

I’m so happy to hear that it was “hot” in Edinburgh! I feel like Goldilocks because Edinburgh sounds too cold for me and Georgia summers are way too hot. Let’s move somewhere together where the weather is just right! L.A.? I think we might be too east coast for that.

I missed not having you with me at the Decatur Arts Festival – just like everything else, it’s not the same without you!

Last night I had this dream that you and Matt moved back to Atlanta, but didn’t tell anyone. I didn’t find out until I ran into you at the mall – I was equal parts confused, pissed off and overjoyed (and surprised to find ourselves at a mall). How’s that for a thinly veiled I-miss-my-twin dream?!

I wish I could send you some ribs and potato salad in honor of Memorial Day picnics. Next time it gets warm again in Scotland, make some Coronation Chicken for a picnic – nom, nom, nom.

Love, Cath

*Post title inspired by these magnets that Troy and I discovered at the Tattered Cover in Denver.

Summer Wedding in Denver

Dear Lar,

It’s so good to be back from Denver! Don’t get me wrong, I had a lot of fun, but the seven hour difference between Denver and Edinburgh was too much! I’m so glad I live on the east coast or we’d never get to talk to each other.

Now, as promised, here are some photos of the dress I wore to the wedding. It’s a Michael Kors dress I got at Marshalls in Buckhead. The best part about it? The dress is a knit so it doesn’t wrinkle at all! I rolled it into a tiny ball and packed it in my suitcase. No ironing required.

Michael Kors dress • Claire Vivier clutch  Kenneth Jay Lane cuff Banana Republic cocktail ring  Gianni Bini shoes

I ended up being a little overdressed at the wedding. People are very casual in Denver – something I’m not used to. You know what else about Denverites (Denverians?)? They’re the nicest, friendliest people I’ve ever met. Troy and I even made a list of all the nice things that complete strangers said or did for us in Denver because we knew we’d never remember them all.

I use the Claire Vivier clutch you got me all the time – it goes with everything! And remember that mesh hair doughnut I bought when we went to Primark together? It makes the perfect bun and is so much easier to use than a sock. I must use it at least three times a week.

In my next post I’ll show you what I wore to go hiking one of the days I was in Colorado. My outfit wasn’t nearly as impractical as you’d think!

Now that we’re only 5 hours apart again let’s do lots of Skyping this weekend, okay?

xoxo, Cath

Dear Lar,

Skype is really just a tease. It makes you feel like you’re staying in touch because you can see each other and hear each other, but sitting in front of a computer chatting is nothing like sitting on the couch together chatting. For one thing, we can’t even really see each others whole outfits! And like you, I forget to tell you all the little menial things I’ve been up to because if you were here you would already know about them. I loved your Dear Cath post so much, that I decided to do the same for you – even though I don’t have any glorious food photos (can you take me to that pho restaurant when I come to visit?!).

Last week Cathy hosted an event at the Buckhead W. I was super classy and immediately made a beeline for the bar (the specialty drink was some type of pineapple mojito) and then plopped down to get my nails done by one of the Bliss Spa ladies. Maybe it was the mojito or the party’s summery theme (Sunglasses at Night), but I decided to throw caution to the wind and get my nails painted bright yellow. Not sure what expression I was going for in that bottom photo. . .

Last weekend Troy and I walked over to Sun in My Belly for brunch. Remember how delicious the honey glazed bacon is? Would you still order it even though you’re not eating as much meat anymore? I thought I was being so discipline by ordering the fruit and granola, but right when the waiter was about to walk away, I blurted out, “And a side of honey glazed bacon!!!!!” Here’s me in my post-bacon-feast glow:

Tunic from Squash Blossom, Blank Denim shorts, Claire Vivier bag and an old pair of Birkenstocks.

For the past two months, Troy and I have become obsessed with Mezcalitos in Oakhurst. Even though we’ve lived within walking distance of the place for the past two years, we only recently went there for the first time and now we’re hooked. The margaritas are delicious – no fake mix stuff – and the veggie tacos are really filling. We usually sit outside and I always think about how you can’t even picnic in Edinburgh without wearing five layers under a windbreaker. As cheesy as it sounds, I wish I could bottle up the warmth here and send it your way.

For the past few weeks, Starbucks has been celebrating Frappuccino Happy Hour with half price fraps between 3-5 p.m. Each day there’s been a different photo contest theme and on Day 6 the theme was Twins. TWINS! If only you still worked in Decatur, I would have made you meet me at Starbucks so we could have taken a photo together. Instead I took this one:

Yep. Took a photo with my phone, put it on my computer and then took another one. This is the kind of hard work I have to do when my twinie isn’t around! Anywho, Starbucks posts the top ten photos each day on their Frappuccino FB page and mine was one of the top ten for Day 6!

On to other exciting news: I finished painting the chevron stripes on the wall in my closet! I know I already sent you some pics, but here are the before-ish, during and after images:

I’m really pleased with the result and now I’m itching to cover all other surfaces in chevron stripes. If only I could paint our deck! It was a bit time consuming, but this post really helped as did listening to him on repeat while I worked.

And last, but not least, a quick Toby update. It looks like he and Wheatie are totally best buds now. They each have their own beds, but always decide to share one at night (please ignore the giant dirty laundry pile in the background):

I’ll be heading to Denver for a few days so we might not be able to chat on Skype – not sure what the internet situation will be like. Nevertheless, I’ll bring my laptop in the hopes I will be able to Skype you and write a post.

xoxo, Cath

My London Dress in Decatur

The title sounds more complicated and hoity-toity than reality. Lar, being the sweet twin sister that she is, got me this dress at Spitalfields Market in London in February. So when people ask me about the dress and I tell them that it’s from London, it makes me sound like I’m some jetsetter that goes shopping on Bond Street – if only! I’d settle for some good, solid window shopping on Oxford Circus if I could even afford a ticket to London!

I wore my “London” dress out on a date night (you can tell it’s a date night because I bothered to put on lipstick). Troy and I went to Cakes and Ale for dinner (note to the locals: get the trout for two, you won’t be disappointed!) and then Colbeh Persian Kitchen and Bar for after-dinner drinks and then to Steinbeck’s for post-after-dinner drinks. I know, we’re gluttons! But we don’t do it every night week.

That’s my arm party in the photo below. I’m a little late on the trend and only did a tame version at that with three pieces. The watch is so old that it doesn’t even work with a new battery. When I brought it to a jewelry store to get the battery changed, the sales clerk said it wasn’t even worth repairing. Harumph! I still like it because it’s my only piece of silver and gold jewelry so I still wear it all the time. You should see the looks I get when people ask me for the time and I have to scrounge around in my purse for my phone while wearing a watch.

I love any dress with pockets – and I mean it. If a potato sack had pockets, I’d belt it and wear it everyday. Not only does this dress have pockets, it has zips!

And if zippered pockets weren’t enough to delight me, the waistband is elastic! I might as well be wearing yoga pants – perfect for big meals and, uh, some light drinking.

Outfit details: Spitalfields Market dress, Mettle necklace, Madewell shoes, BCBG OMG bracelet, Ann Klein watch, Shashi bracelet.

___________

Dearest Lar,

Thank you again and again for my lurvly dress! I got so many compliments on it – even one compliment where a guy said “I like how it’s kind of sheer, but covered up!” Sheer?! I freaked out a bit – and was a little creeped out – but Troy assured me that it’s a perfectly opaque dress.

Are you going out for high tea this weekend? I am! Troy, mom, dad and I are going to try out Cozee Teas, a new teashop in Decatur. I’ll report back, but am not going to hold my breath for real clotted cream!

love, cath

Simon Fashion Bow Wow

Hello world! So sorry I’ve been away for over a week from blogging. Thank goodness for Lar and all her wonderful posts. Last week I did nothing but study for my final every day after work and before that I was in Orlando for work. But now I’m back and have a whole month off before summer classes start and I’m going to blog every chance I get – woohoo!

About a month ago I was asked to be a judge at the Simon Fashion Bow Wow – a fashion show featuring designs by students at Bauder College, worn by local media folks, walking down the runway with adoptable dogs from the Atlanta Humane Society in the middle of Lenox Mall owned by Simon. Got all that? No worries if you didn’t, just scroll and look at the photos to get a better idea of what the event was about.

Here I am with the other two judges. That’s Jennifer Franklin to my right and Deena Poythress to my left:

Simon Fashion Bow Wow has a special place in my heart since we got my parent’s dog, Boo Radley, at the Atlanta Human Society.

The following photos were taken by the talented Kate Awtrey.

I loved the red details on this color block dress:

Emily Foley looked so chic in this Marie Antoinette-inspired poof dress:

I’m a sucker for anything that’s cut on a bias – and purple!

Would you judge me if I told you that I would totally dress up my dog in this striped shirt and beret if I had this dress? You would? Well, I don’t blame you, but that wouldn’t stop me from doing it.

I’m really a horrible judge because I wanted every design to win (the winning student received a $250 Simon Mall giftcard).

Below is the winning dress with the designer carrying a dog in a matching ruffle collar:

Gah! So cute!

Needless to say, I had a wonderful time and will happily volunteer to judge any future shows featuring ridiculously cute dogs and incredibly talented students.

I realize now that I didn’t take any photos of my outfit that evening (fashion blogger fail). For those of you who are curious, I wore my cropped black pants from Ann Taylor, BB Dakota sleeveless white Reeder top, Mettle necklace, a long black cardi and my nude Vera Wang for Kohl’s pumps. You can kind of see my outfit better in one of the photos in the Tastemaker Magazine article.

______________

Dearest Lar,

I wish you could have seen all the dogs in the show. Most of them were too overwhelmed by the crowds so they had to be carried out instead of walked. One of the dogs was a puppy and he slept through the whole thing!

I wish you could have a dog in Scotland. You know how we were talking today about how cold you always are in your flat? Well, you would be so much warmer with a dog sitting by you. Toby is pressed up against me as I type this and my whole right side is overheated. Of course it helps that it’s like 80 degrees outside.

You and Matt should come back to Atlanta for a week just to get warm again (hint, hint). Are you guys still using your hot water bottles? It seems so wrong to ask that since it’s practically May.

I’ll be sending you warming, sunshine-y thoughts this week!

xoxo, cath
