I Need New Pants*

I just realized that almost all of my outfit shots for the past few months have included these cobalt jeans. I either:

a.) really like them
b.) haven’t bought a new pair of pants in months (maybe a year?)
c.) am stuck in a fashion rut
d.) all of the above

If you chose D, you’re right! Option C might be a bit of a stretch (they aren’t yoga pants after all), but they’re more comfortable than most jeans. So there you have it, I need new pants. At least my consistency has proven how versatile these ankle jeans are. I’ve paired them with navy and white stripes, leopard print and chambray. In the following photos, I’m wearing them with shades of blue and black and white accents:

navy J.Crew jacket

J.Crew jacket • Club Monaco blouse • necklace from Shopbop a few years ago • Target belt • J.Crew Outlet jeans • Office loafers • Saddleback Leather bag

I wore this outfit at the Coco Rae Madewell event on Saturday. These photos were taken before the event, so my nails aren’t painted with the new AsianCajuns Double Mint polish (seen here).  Speaking of which, you can now order AsianCajuns Double Mint online! I purchased a few bottles this weekend to send to Lar so she can paint her finger nails a cheery, spring color (something that’s very much needed in a cold, gray location like Edinburgh).

Money is tight, so if I’m going to buy new pants it has to be on the cheap. Here are a couple feasible options:

Ponte Knit Skinnies (in Cobalt of course) – $17.80
• Brightly colored skinny jeans – $22
Easy Tuck Tapered Pants – $19.90
Peg pants – $30.52
Grey Snake Print Skinny Pants – $25.60

Do you know of any other cheap, online stores? If so, send them my way. I need to get out of my cobalt jean rut obsession!

* I realize that our British readers might have a little chuckle at this title. Just know that I’m talking about trousers – not pants! I don’t ever want to say never, but it’s pretty unlikely that I’ll ever have a blog post titled, “I Need New Underwear.”

____________

Dearest Lar,

I think it’s so funny that you’ve been living in the UK for over a year and already think “pants” means underwear. “Trousers” sound way too formal. What do you call yoga pants? Yoga trousers?

I’m putting together a package for you with mom and I’ll make sure to include a bottle of AsianCajuns Double Mint. Is there anything else that you would like me to include? Burt’s Bees lip balm? Corn tortillas? American mags? Just let me know!

Always thinking of you,

Cath

Twin Take: The Blue Sweater

twins-blue-sweater

twin-blue-sweaters

Cath and I very rarely dressed alike when we both lived in Atlanta together. But wearing the same thing now that we are 4391 miles apart (who’s counting?) makes me feel at least a smidge closer to Cath. Twin power . dressing!

We didn’t plan a whole outfit together — just one item. In this case it was a blue Uniqulo sweater from a few years ago. Cath accessorized with red lippie, a dashing hat and stripes. I swaddled my torso in the sweater and tucked it in a skirt to create a faux wrap-dress. The outfits look completely different even though the essentials are similar: black skirt, booties, and a long gold necklace. What a difference 4391 miles makes! (sniff, sniff).

Dear Cath,

We’ll be on our way to Munich when you read this. It’s 4774 miles from Atlanta — so a few hundred miles further away — harumph. But I will totally What’s App you when we get there and take photos of beer gardens and fairy-tale castles and Alex and Dexin!

Tschüs!

Favorite Things

Happy belated St. Patrick’s Day! Did you celebrate? Troy played at a local pub and then we stuffed ourselves with corned beef and cabbage. Instead of showing you pics of me wearing green and slobbering over corned beef, I figured I’d blog about some things that I’m loving at the moment:

1.) I got these Crate and Barrel bookends at the Atlanta Hospital Hospitality House Bargainanza on Saturday for $6.

bookends

2.) A few beauty items I’ve been using nonstop: Eos lip balm in Sweet Mint (it’s 95% organic and paraben-free), Revlon Lip Butter in Peach Parfait, and L’Oreal BB Cream – it works just as well as more expensive primers.

revlon lip butter

3.) If you follow AsianCajuns on Facebook, you would know that I was debating about getting this pouch on Mikkat Market. Troy surprised me the other day by ordering it for me 🙂

faux chanel pouch

4.) At $28, this BKR bottle was a big splurge for me, but I use it everyday and love it. It’s glass – so there’s no worries about BPAs and it’s diswasher safe. Also, it says, “It’d be really great if you had your shit together a little more” right next to a giant heart. What’s not to love?

BKR Water Bottle

5.) I bought this wooden try from the same charity sale as the Crate and Barrel bookends – it was only $2! I’ve placed it by my front door so I can drop my phone and keys (and AsianCajuns name necklace) in there as soon as I walk inside.

So there you have it, some consumerism on the cheap!

I hope you all are having a great Monday!

Dearest Lar,

I never thought to ask you yesterday while we were skyping, but I assume St. Patrick’s Day isn’t celebrated in Scotland. Is that right? Do the local pubs have a run on Guinness?  Probably not!

I was at a restaurant on Saturday and there was a woman wearing an Edinburgh Castle shirt at the table near us. I wanted to run up to her and say, “My sister lives very close to the castle!” But I thought better of it, which is probably for the best.

Have fun in Munich. I can’t wait to hear all about it!

xoxo, Cath

Cath is in Redbook’s April Issue!

AsianCajuns-Redbook-magazine

This is the pic of Cath that’s in the latest Redbook. Taken by the oh-so-talented Cameron of Atlanta Street fashion, Cath is featured with a number of other lovely ladies from around the world who show you how to rock blue jeans (jeans that are blue?). See the rest of them here.

——

Dear Cath,

1) This makes me miss you like whoa.

2) I love how Redbook features a diverse range of street stylers — not just fashionistas/modelistas. There needs to be more of that on the intertubes and in mags.

3) Must get me a pair of cobalt jeans — and a Wheatie.

Miss you like mad!

New Shoes for the Spring

chambray and blue jeans

Thrifted top (from Lar) • J.Crew Outlet jeans • Kate Spade bag • new! BC wedges

One of my main new year’s resolutions is to stick to a strict budget so I can save up enough money to see Lar again as soon as possible. For the past couple of months, that’s meant buying very little apart from necessities. I’m not going to lie, it’s been hard. I never thought I was a huge clotheshorse to begin with – especially compared to all the other amazingly prolific fashion bloggers out there – but now I realize I use to spend a fair share of my budget on clothes and accessories. So for the past few months, I’ve only purchased one dress(Prabal Gurung for Target dress) and a handful of jewelry from Forever 21. . . until last week, that is. Sq/Ft, one of my favorite local boutiques, was not only having a sale, they were also offering a deal on Scoutmob!

BC shoes

My inner non-saving, clotheshorse got the best of me and I purchased these black BC wedges. I was in luck though because they were marked down from $80 to $36. Not bad, right? They’re very comfortable and like a spring version of this winter’s ubiquitous wedge sneaker. I’d add a link to them online, but I can’t find them on the BC website. If you live locally and you want to purchase them, Sq/Ft still had quite a few pairs left.

Update: My cousin found the shoes on Amazon.com here. They’re around $70 and there are four colors to choose from. I think the mint version is gorgeous. Thanks for the link, Kelly!

black wedge slipons

The weather this weekend was gorgeous and definitely warm enough for me to try out my new kicks. Troy and I walked the dogs to the local market and it was marvelous. If I didn’t have so much school work, I would have wanted to go on a picnic and stuffed myself with wine and cheese.

rolled sleeves

Wheatie would have preferred a picnic too.

Hope you all are having a good Monday!

_________

Dearest Lar,

I wish you could have flown home for this weekend so you could have enjoyed the warm weather! I can’t believe I was frolicking about in 60 degree weather and you had snow this morning in Edinburgh. At least it was the start of daylight savings today so now we’re only four hours apart – woohoo!

Love, Cath

TGIF Friday Link Love: My Spring Wish List

Happy Friday and International Women’s Day! I’m mixing things up a bit and doing my spring wish list for this week’s link love. I tried to get Lar to create her own wish list, but her anti-consumerism got the best of her. Stay strong, Lar!
Spring Wish List

1.) The perfect spring/summer dress.

2.) The summer version of the classic button-up chambray shirt.

3.) A beautiful ring for less than $150.

4.) There’s something so feminine and ballet-ic about this cami.

5.) Neon khakis seems oxymoronic, but also ingenius.

6.) The clutch that goes with everything.

7.) The perfect flats for work.

Skip N’ Whistle Sale on Fab.com

I’ve had a special place in my heart for Skip N’ Whistle ever since they sent me my tacky Christmas sweater t-shirt. They have the most cheeky t-shirt prints and the company is based out of New Orleans (yay Cajuns!). So even though Lar and I don’t usually post on Thursdays, I wanted to let you lovelies know about the Skip N’ Whistle sale going on over at Fab.com for the next two days.

skip n whistle fab sale

These are just four of the options on sale. I think the pup is my favorite, but the bear one has the perfect mix of sweetness, weirdness and awesomeness rolled into one. Then that cat just looks damn cool and the unicorn shirt randomly reminds me of this Macklemore song. Which one should I get?! Ugh, I don’t know! First world problems abound!

You can see all of Skip ‘N Whistles sweatshirts here. Happy sales shopping!

Brunch Time in Atlanta

My Favorite Atlanta Brunch Spots

Lar and I have been talking about doing mini city guides for Atlanta and Edinburgh since we like to (window) shop and eat so much. This post is my first attempt with a list of my favorite places to eat brunch in Atlanta. There’s something so comforting about a weekend brunch. Maybe I just like the idea of waking up late and driving some place where someone will make me pancakes and eggs with an endless supply of coffee. Whatever the case, when I’m in a brunch kind of mood, here’s where I go:

Sun in My Belly – This one is probably my all-time favorite brunch spot because it’s within walking distance of my house, has Anthropologie-like decor and offers the most amazing honey-glazed bacon. I always get the Kirkwood Breakfast, but the french toast, the lox and bagels, the homemade granola with fresh fruit, and everything else on the menu is brunch perfection.

Gato Bizco Cafe – Located across the street from the original and very popular Flying Biscuit Cafe (see below), Gato is like a hipster’s Waffle House minus the greasiness. I’ve never had anything bad here and love the small footprint – there’s only a handful of booths and a small counter.

Home Grown – Get the biscuits and gravy (unless you’re vegan/vegetarian)!! It’ll be the best $3 brunch you’ve ever had. If you’ve never had biscuits and gravy, shame on you! What are you doing up north? Come down and try Home Grown’s and then you’ll really know what biscuits and gravy is supposed to taste like.

Ria’s Bluebird – Plenty of vegetarian dishes here. I love the huevos rancheros, but I’ve heard the beef brisket is to die for. Like all the places listed in the post, expect a wait on the weekend. I usually go in the summer, so I can drink my cup of coffee out front while waiting for a table.

Rise-N-Dine (pictured in this post) – Right by Emory University (so expect to see lots of Uggs and North Face), but very down to earth. The first time I came here I immediately fell in love with the vintage decor and oilcloth fabric on the tables. Also, they serve Nutella pancakes. Enough said.

Radial Cafe – Dining here is like giving a big ol’ bear hug to the local community. The food is all locally sourced and almost everything that leaves your table is composted.

Flying Biscuit Cafe – With locations all over the Atlanta area now, Flying Biscuit has become pretty suburbanized so I would recommend going to the original location in Candler Park for a little more flair. The biscuits are still some of the best around and you can’t go wrong with the organic oatmeal pancakes or a side of the creamy, buttery grits.

Waffle House – Sorry WH haters, I have to put this on my list. I probably eat here more often after a late night than at brunch, but it needs to be included because sometimes Waffle House’s cheese ‘n eggs are the only thing that will hit the spot. I usually go to the one in Avondale Estates because the service is consistently friendly and it’s located a block away from the Waffle House Museum – yes, that’s a real thing!!

Keep in mind this is by no means a complete list. There are plenty of other wonderful dining establishments that serve brunch in Atlanta that I just haven’t frequented enough to be a fair judge. The latest issue of Atlanta Magazine has a much more thorough, unbiased list (every place I listed is on the east or south side of the city).

Eugina Kim headband

Troy and I went to Rise N Dine on Saturday for brunch. We split the Polish omelet and homemade chicken sausage biscuit. It was freezing this weekend – at least by Atlanta standards – so all I wanted was warm, comfort food.

Any brunch fans out there? What are your favorite brunch spots in your hometown? Any Denver readers? Troy and I will be going to Denver in April and need some brunch suggestions.

PS: Congrats to Marian for winning the Sinless Cocktails contest! I used Randomize.org to choose a winner. Thank you to everyone who entered! Marian, I’ll be sending your email to the owners of Sinless and they’ll be getting in touch with you.

____________

Dear Lar,

As I was writing this, I was trying to think of all of the places I like to each brunch in Edinburgh. There’s the German bakery of course and there was that cute French bakery we went to last August near your old flat in Morningside. I’ll get the oatmeal at Chocolate Soup any day and a bagel at Elephants and Bagels, but surely there’s other brunch/breakfast-y places. Or is brunch not as big in the UK? I always figured that if there were elevenses then surely there’s brunch, right?

I can’t believe I got to talk to you twice this weekend on Skype! So glad you and Matt had fun in Glasgow and actually found some sun. I can’t wait to see your post on your weekend adventure!

xoxo, Cath

Happy Belated National Margarita Day and a Give Away!

I had planned to do this post today before I realized that national margarita day was last Friday – dagnabbit! Well, regardless of my bad blog post timing, let me tell you about how this post came about.

A week ago, the kind folks over at Sinless sent me their margarita and mojito mixes to test and to do a give away.

Sinless Margarita recipe

Usually I don’t push products on AsianCajuns, but hear me out! Here’s why I’m excited about these mixes:

1.) They’re only 5 calories (one of my new years resolution was to, uh, drink less calories)
2.) They’re local! The cute couple that started Sinless lives right by me.
3.) Unlike most mixes, these are all natural. There aren’t any preservatives in the mixes, so you have to keep the bottles refrigerated.

sinless margarita salt

I whipped up a batch of margaritas yesterday and made a salt/sugar/lime zest to rim the glasses.

sinless margarita

It was actually warm enough outside on Sunday that it felt like margarita weather. I had every intention of following up the margaritas with some mojitos, but realized that I didn’t have any rum in the house. Guess what I’ll be drinking next weekend! I wonder when national mojito day is.

Sinless Margarita only 69 calories

I didn’t do a full outfit shot with this post because I’ll be showing off the dress I’m wearing when I do a post on the Tastemaker Magazine/ Coco Rae photo shoot (the cardi is H&M and the bracelet is from Forever 21).

sinless margarita for men

Want to try a Sinless mixer for yourself? To enter the give away, all you have to do is like the Sinless Margarita Facebook page and the AsianCajuns Facebook page (if you haven’t, ahem, already done so 😉 ) and leave a comment on this post with your email address. I’ll choose a winner at random on Friday. Good luck and happy, low-calorie drinking!

___________

Dearest Lar,

Are margaritas big in Scotland? I know I’ve never ordered one at a pub in Edinburgh, but that’s because I’m always so cold in Scotland that I just end up wanting to drink whiskey.

I hate that we didn’t get a chance to really talk this weekend. That just means we’ll have to Skype twice next weekend and email a lot during the week, okay?

Miss you like crazy.

xoxo, Cath

Trying on the Prabal Gurung for Target Collection

You know you’re a fashion addict when you wake up at 7:00 am on a Sunday morning to check out a new line at Target and end up spending almost half of your monthly grocery budget on a dress and a pair of shoes (my LearnVest financial planner will be so disappointed!). But it was all worth being able to check out the new Prabal Gurung line with my friend Meredith – and about seven other women waiting for Target to open at 8:00 this morning.

AsianCajuns shop Prabal Gurung

I picked out seven items to try out and wanted to take home almost every piece, but I couldn’t very well spend all of my grocery money so I ended up going home with only my absolutely favorite pieces. I’m hoping some of the items I liked won’t sell out and will eventually go on sale. Wishful thinking, I know!

Prabal Gurung for Target sweatshirt

I loved the sweatshirt in the First Date Print, but figured it wasn’t as versatile as a dress. It would look really cute with black shorts in the spring though. Hmmm.I suppose I could always go back to the store or buy it online.

prabal gurung for target short sleeve dress

I was convinced before trying on everything that this was the dress that I was going to purchase. While I really like the shape and design, the jersey dress (a few photos below) won out because it was so comfortable.

prabal gurung for target pleated skirt

I’m really hoping this top and skirt don’t sell out. Both pieces would be perfect for work (worn separate, of course).

Prabal Gurung for Target color block sweater

I loved the blues of this sweater, but it was slightly too long for me – it’s also pretty think so I wouldn’t buy it for layering over shirts.

So what did I end up with? This drop waist, jersey dress and heels below.

Prabal Gurung for Target drop waist dress

I was so excited about the shoes that I immediately came home and changed my outfit so I could wear them. It’s a little chilly and rainy in Atlanta to be wearing open-toed shoes, but why not?! It’s nice to have a little pop of color in the dead of winter.

Prabal Gurung for Target heels

Target stripped sweatshirt (old) | H&M belt | J.Crew outlet jeans | Prabal Gurung for Target heels

I’m going to wear my new Prabal Gurung dress to the Polish Me Pretty Party next week. Do you live in the Atlanta area? You should come! For details, check out the previous post.

________

Dearest Lar,

After missing your twin sister, not having a Target in your country should be a top reason to not stay in the UK. Just saying 😉 True you have Primark, Selfridges, Office, etc. but there’s just something so wonderful about Target – and not just the designer collabs. It’s a big box chain store, but it has so many fun items and you can buy your groceries and designer (collaboration) clothes all under one roof. But you know all of that already

So glad we had a Skype date yesterday – I wish we could talk everyday!

xoxo, Cath
