Model for a Day Judges

Thank you to everyone who commented on the last post. I’m so glad dress #4 is a hit!

Believe it or not, this post is not wedding-centric even though Lar is getting married in two days AND she and Matt just got legally married today at the courthouse (I’ll post some photos soon of them signing their marriage license).

Instead of wedding talk, this post is about what Lar and I were up to last Saturday. Can you spot us in the photo below?

Yep! That’s us on the left at the judges table. Impressive, no?

The folks over at Lenox Mall invited us to be judges for their Model for a Day contest. It was a pretty sweet gig considering all we had to do was sit at the judges table, maintain a look of importance and judge the contestants on a scale of 0-15. Actually we suck at looking serious and just ended up grinning eagerly at all the contestants. Anna Wintours we are not.

The other judges were really nice. In the photo below that’s Vinny (on the left) from Bare Escentuals, me, Lindsey from Banana Republic, Lar and not pictured is Anne from the Lenox Mall.

The reason for judging? The winning models get to walk in the upcoming Banana fashion show on April 2 that will be part of Lenox Square Mall’s Simon Fashion Now – a weekend of fashion on April 1st and 2nd. If you’re in the Atlanta area, click here for more info.

All in all it was fun pretending to be a judge and it was so nice to have a break from wedding planning.

A big thank you to Jordan and Mary Elizabeth with BRAVE PR for thinking of us!

Things are getting a little hectic here for the wedding – especially since our mom is home sick with a fever – but I’ll try to get at least one more post up before the wedding. Thank you all for being so supportive and sweet!

I’m Marrying a Doc-tah

Ladies and Gentlemen, let me introduce you to my one and only smoochywoochy (I know I’m going to hell for the baby talk) and future Mr. Lauren Lee, Dr. Matthew M. Crane. A newly minted doctor as of today!!! So the next time someone says “Is there a doctor in the house?!!” He can confidently announce “Yes!” And then gently let them down explaining that his doctorate is in bio-engineering with a focus in microfluidics and he can’t in fact stop the hemorrhaging. Huh? Exactly. I am so proud of you, Matteo!

We celebrated post-defense with some bubbly and then a stop by Superpan. What is Superpan? Well, my friends, all I can say is you have not had a sandwich until you have eaten here. In fact, locals, if you are still reading this instead of arranging your next lunch schedule around Superpan, I don’t think we can be friends. No! I don’t mean that- I’m extremely fond of you, but seriously, these sandwiches will make your toes curl with each blissful bite. Please go as soon as you can, and feel free to invite me. I don’t care if I look like a stuffed sausage in my wedding dress. These sandwiches are worth that.

About that wedding countdown. so there are 16 days left. 16. Gulp.

Remember that bride-zilla request of mine to have all the books in the library/ceremony room white? Done. Done because my amazing mom and fiance dutifully watched “Pushing Daisies” and “South Park” reruns while covering hundreds of books over the course of three weekends.

Some new do-dads I just got came in the mail this week (I love packages!):

1) This gorgeous flower head thingy from Mignonne Handmade via Etsy
2) My “wedding” earrings by Darleen Meier also via Etsy
3) And this faincy cuff from Kenneth Jay Lane via Shopbop

And I’ll leave you with two more photos from our engagement shoot with the amazing photographer Aharon Hill. (pst- so that last photo, I reallly wanted to order the funnel cake and not the cotton candy, but I look way less cute with powdered sugar and grease all over my face. The spun sugar isn’t my best look either but it beats me shoveling down fried dough I guess- yummmm).

Happy Friday, lovelies! Tell us what you’re up too (you too, Cath, since I’m sure everyone would like some non-wedding news ;)). xoxox, Lar

I Love Atlanta But Not Wedding Count Downs

And it’s probably fairer to say “melt-down” rather than “count down.” Have I mentioned that I’m getting married at the end of this month? This teeny wedding is causing me more heartburn than I care to relate here. I’m also a little nervous about, you know, getting married. To be clear, I’m not nervous about my man or being legally tied to another human being, but the fact that I’ll be A Wife this time next month freaks me out a little. A lot-tle, actually.

So, I hope you don’t mind that this post will be wedding-talk free. In fact, you should enjoy it because it is probably the last post in the next three weeks free of wedding updates. By the end of March you’ll all just be like “get married already, Lar, and shut your pie hole about it! Sheesh!!”

This is what Cath and I did this weekend when I was pretending that I didn’t have other more pressing things to attend to:

Took a tour of some gorgeous historic apartments right in the heart of Atlanta:

Danced outside the apartment building on Peachtree St.:

(Thanks for the photos Troy and Lena!)

Ate cookies at (a replica of) Robert Burns cottage:

Long-time readers know that Cath and I are nuts about anything Scotland. What are the chances that our “home” town of Atlanta would have the only replica of Burns’ home?! A bit of Scotland just 20 minutes south of our front door(s). It has been the home of the Burns Club of Atlanta since 1910! Sadly, we weren’t inducted into said club even though we tried to explain our Scotophile enthusiasm, but they did take us for a tour inside (usually visits are for club members only).

How did we make it inside this tartan-festooned club and the swanky apartments of yore? Phoenix Flies of course! Presented by the Atlanta Preservation Center every year, they offer free (FREE! – my favorite word) tours around the city every day through March 20. Cath and I hope to hit a few more tours before my wedding.

So how was that for a wedding breather?

Thank you so much for all the sweet comments about my engagement photos! You guys made my week!

We apologize if we are slow with commenting and emails in the forthcoming weeks. Apart from my self-centered wedding brain, Cath is applying to grad school and slammed with work, and my bf fiance is defending his dissertation this week (woohoo- go, Matteo!!!). Do keep in touch though! We love reading your comments even if we can’t get back to you as soon as we would like.

Hope you had a gorgeous weekend, readers!!!

AsianCajuns at the Wigwam

Before a mega much-over-due wedding update, I had to share these photos with you that Cath and I took last week with our friend Ali.

So sometimes Atlanta is magical. Like 70 degrees in mid-February magical. Last weekend we took advantage of said magical-ness by playing outside in sleeveless attire. We had sandwiches at Victory’s, Kombucha at Savi’s, and then we strolled over to the 4th Ward to take a look at the photogenic, Miami-esque, appropriately named Wigwam (???) Condos.

Aren’t they so kewl? And so very not Atlanta. Also very not wigwam-ish (they are named for the silhouette of what I thought was a cupid but happens to be a 3-ft. pink Native American chief – see above). I love its incongruity. It’s right by Martin Luther King Jr’s historical home and Lotta Frutta which has deeelicious smoothies and slightly taciturn smoothie makers.

I highly recommend visiting historic sites and eating delicious sandwiches this weekend if you guys can. Or, you know what? You guys should just all come down here and we’ll take you around! Okay, good. It’s a date. See you tomorrow!

In the meantime, here’s Cath dancing up the Wigwam stairs:

On Cath: shirt, thrifted; jeans, Blank; shoes, TOMS

On Lar (moi): awesomest dress in the world is a gift from Cath from Creatures of Comfort in L.A.; bandeau (see in photo below), AA; belt, Madewell; skirt, Citizens of Humanity; boots, years old from Target; purse, my favorite and least practical bag and I have no idea where it’s from; bracelets are assorted, one is from my future in-laws from Egypt!

xoxo,

Lar

Date Night with Cath

On Cath: sweater, Target; belt, H&M; shirt, thrifted Helmet Lang; skirt, Limited; tights, Walgreens; shoes, Aldos.
On Lar (moi): pleather jacket, Express; tee, belt, boots, AE; jeans, Earnest Sewn; necklace, c/o Novica.

So Cath and I lived together for most of college and post-college, but for the last nine months we’ve lived <gasp>.<sob>.seven minutes away from each other. I hate it.

Oh, and we even work about five minutes apart. But somehow we see very little of each other. We hang out maybe twice a week, and that’s only if we schedule it. That’s what we did last week. Date night for the AsianCajuns. Actually we kind of had two date nights (but one included the mens).

At our local bbq place Burnt Fork (god bless Southern food!!!):

(Below) My favorite new cocktail at Leon’s Full Service (in Decatur) called the Gutter Pop. I forget everything that’s in it, but I do know there is gin, gin and more gin, garnished with a peel of orange and a bit of clove. I love you, winter cocktail!

When we “grow up” Cath and I plan to live, if not next door to each other, in the same neighborhood. There is a chance that I might be moving outside of Atlanta for just a bit (my smartypants fiance is looking far a-field for postdoc employment). I haven’t told Cath yet, but she’s coming with us. I mean, 2-3 years living more than 10 minutes apart- possibly even an ocean apart!- unfathomable. Kitcath, I hope you don’t mind 😉

ps- A wedding update to come soon! Remember those bookshelves I was talking about? Yeah, two thirds of all the books? Now covered in white paper. Woot, woot!

Ode to Decatur

We tend to mention Decatur (our adopted hometown) a lot on this blog. For those of you not familiar with it, Decatur is a teeny-tiny, progressive city that borders the east side of Atlanta. As individuals and as bloggers, we’ve gotten a lot of support from the local community so we try to give back every chance we get.

In addition to some local volunteering and seeing if we’re smarter than Decatur 5th Graders (turns out we’re about on par), we’re also contributing to the Decatur Tourism blog – the perfect place to go if you are a first-time visitor to Decatur or a long-time resident. You can see a list of the other blog contributors here. I just finished our first post so have a look around.

We also shot a short video a couple months ago for Decatur’s Tourism site that I’ve been meaning to post. I always kind of cringe when I see myself on video, but I love that I’m side by side with Lar. Plus, there was a professional involved – thank goodness for the power of editing!

So let us know when you are next in town! We’d love to be your tour guides.

Are We Smarter than a 5th Grader?

Let’s see. 5th grade was about 12 17 years ago, and it took me a while to do that kind of math.this doesn’t look good.

Cath and I were invited to be contestants in Decatur’s very own “Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader.” And you know how they got us to agree to embarrass ourselves in front of a large audience? They called us “celebrities!” So we of course humbly accepted. (I’m fairly certain there will be a number of disappointed 5th graders on Wednesday night when they realize they aren’t going head-to-head with a real Decatur celebrity like the Mayor or Fire Chief. Sorry, kiddos!).

Also, it turns out this isn’t just about us being local celebrities, the proceeds go to the Glenwood Academy 5th graders so that they can create a legacy gift of art for the new 4-5 Academy in Decatur. Sweet! Art and education. I really can’t think of a better reason to make a fool of myself, can you?

Locals, you can still get tickets here for the event for this Wednesday night. Non-locals, we’ll be sure to ask someone to capture our most embarrassing moments for your viewing pleasure. Below are some of the real celebrities we’ll be sharing the stage with:

Need a fashion fix? Catch us on Sally’s latest post about work-wear (we’re at the bottom of the long list of inspiring ladies who do the 9-5).

Instead of Jordan Almonds I’m Gonna Have Homemade Poptarts

Another perk to doing the just-short-of-elopement-size-wedding? I can afford a little more than sugared almonds for my guests’ favors. A few weeks ago I was browsing on Scoutmob’s site and came across Queen of Tarts. Well, actually I came across the words “homemade poptarts.” And a little internet research and much drooling later, I knew there was a reason to have a wedding (apart from the marriage bit), really really really good food.

So I called up the Queen of Tarts herself, and a few days later she delivered a delicious package of poptarts for me to try out – in the name of wedding research of course. Listen to this list of flavors: brandied cherry and ganache, ruby red (grapefruit) and vanilla, prosecco soaked fig with brie, port poached pear, hazelnut chocolate, apple tartin, blueberry and lemon. I thought, better not “risk” it. I better try them all. Again, for the sake of my guests. So I did what any decent (good, valiant, hungry) bride would do, and tried all of them. All. Of. Them.

I wasn’t alone in my careful, methodical approach to determining which flavors are best. I called in a team of experts:

Here’s what I decided. Forget the guests (sorry, guys!). I’m keeping these pastry goodies for myself. In exchange, you guys can take my dresses. I don’t plan to fit into them if I continue down Homemade Tart Lane for the next couple of weeks. C’est la vie. When it comes down to it, as much as I love fashion, I could (mayyyybe) live without it. I can’t live without delicious, heaven-sent food.

Do you want some too, readers? I believe the Queen ships her goodies stateside from Atlanta (sorry, international readers. I’d love to send you some!). To get in touch with her, just send her a message on her Queen of Tarts facebook page. A box of six tarts is just $19. Believe me, it’s a steal of a deal-iciousness.

Oh, and guys! Thanks so so much for all your help picking out Cath’s maid-o-honor gown. #2 it is! We hear you loud and clear. We loved reading all your comments. We’ll show you how we end up customizing it!

Statues, A Cat, and A Sneak Peek at One of Cath’s Dresses

This is one of my favorite places to take photos in Decatur. It’s right next to a popular pub and used to be home to the Gypsy Camp. It’s it a little eerie, but it’s not Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil eerie because the nymphs have cute little round bellies and I can’t imagine them ever killing someone in Johny Mercer’s house. Oh but I do love a good dose of Southern Gothic, don’t you?

The details: Long jacket, TJ Max | Red orange tunic, AA | Buckle Boots, Asos

Oh, and here are few more random things for your Thursday/Friday:

Last week when I stepped out of my car, this friendly neighborhood kitty jumped right in and decided it was for her (or him? didn’t get a good look). I’m sure it is my divine Franciscan way with the animal kingdom that convinced her this was a good idea (and not the recently warmed interior and seats). It was like watching a kid in a ball pen, except no balls, just lovely leather that must feel sooo good to kitty claws paws. After she had explored the front half of the car, she headed for the back. Once she seemed through, I opened the back door for her like any good chauffeur would. She seemed quite pleased with the whole experience:

Oh! And before I forget, Cath’s third option for maid-o-honor dress came in yesterday. I’m going to grab a photo of her after work tomorrow and then we can have your brilliant minds help us choose which is best for zee wedding in an upcoming post. In the meantime, here is a sneak-peek at one of them:

The AsianCajuns Meet The Selby!!!

It’s like the Sartorialist all over again – except this time it was at Jackson Fine Arts and there were more photography people and fewer fashiony people. (For those of you not familiar with The Selby, check out his blog here. It is the ultimate in voyeuristic sophistication – I mean what’s more sophisticated that greedily eying wealthy, eccentric peoples’ closets?!).

Todd Selby was very nice, even when Cath and I didn’t recognize him at first- whoops! He even let us take a photo of his shoes- aren’t they lovely?

Ohhh and look at this! Last night was not the first time we “met” Todd. Way back in the day, August 25, 2008 to be exact, Cath and I did a tribute post to The Selby and look who commented!!! Here is the faux Selby shoot we took back in the day- click here.

Below Cath is waiting to ambush talk to Todd with his book in hand- which I stupidly forgot to get signed in my oh-so-cool way of meeting celebrities (“Hiii Hi Hi! Love your work! Your shoes are awesome ohmygosh can we get  a picture with you? Oh cool cool yeah awesome Thank YOU!” Just a warning to you readers-who-will-be-celebrities, my charming way will make you weak in the knees).

Oh yeah! And this is what we wore.

On Cath:
Necklace, Rockit Boutique in Decatur | Sweater is H&M | Top is from LA | Skirt is from???

On moi:
Necklace is also from Rockit | Shirt is thrifted | Skirt is from a small boutique in Birmingham | Belt is a gift from this lovely lady | Boots are over-the-knee Jeffrey Campbell

Lastly, in the spirit of seeing Mr. Selby last night, I took a pic of Cath’s apartment. I just love it there. It’s teeny but in a cozy way not in a claustrophobic way, and it always smells so good. Cath is, I guarantee, the neatest person you’ll ever meet (I mean “neat” in every way possible) and she has such a good eye. I’m definitely having her help me when I move to Matt’s place.

Speaking of which (are you guys still there? Sorry this is such an epically long post! Way to go if you made it this far!), Cath ordered three possible maid-of-honor dresses, and we want you guys to tell us which you like best. Keep an eye out in the next few posts!

Happy Saturday, Readers! Tell us what you’re up to this weekend!
