A Night on the Town in Edinburgh

I have so many great memories from visiting Lar last month that I hope you all don’t mind me posting a bit more about my visit. For those of you who are sick of Scotland photos, don’t worry! I’ll be posting some outfit pics soon. And I’m sure Lar will be posting some amazing Greece photos when she gets back next week.

Here’s Lar waiting for the bus after we went to see Tatyana, a modern dance created for and performed by the Deborah Colker Dance Company. It was part of the Edinburgh International Festival and such a treat to see!

Express faux-leather jacket • thrifted skirt • Frye boots

Tatyana is a dance interpretation of Pushkin’s novel Eugene Onegin. Sounds very high-brow, doesn’t it? Well, it was. I’ve never read one sentence written by Pushkin in my life. Plus, it took me a whole act to realize that there was more than one dancer representing the character Tatyana and more than one dancer representing Onegin on stage. Here’s a helpful tip to any performance-goer: read the program before the performance begins. Durh!

The good news is that even philistines like me would thoroughly enjoy Tatyana. Being a former dancer, my legs always twitch when I see a great dance performance – and my legs twitched at least five times during Tatyana. Weird. I know. Lar and I went with two other friends that weren’t dancers and they loved it just as much as we did.

Edinburgh has so many great theater/performance venues. Tatyana was showing at the Edinburgh Playhouse:

I loved the rental opera glasses in between each seat. I wish every opera house was required to have these – mostly because I can only ever afford the nose-bleed seats and always, always, always hate not being able to see the dancers close up.

I felt so cultured leaving the Edinburgh Playhouse that night. Puskin, dance, Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky all rolled into one night! It made me think that I should stop spending money on clothes and save up to see great performances like this one.

Dearest Lar,

Do you have leg twitches too? I always figured that you did since you’re my twin and all. There have been so many times when I’ve had my leg crossed while watching a dance performance and my top leg involuntarily kicks out a bit – like someone has tapped the front of my knee. Surely that happens to you too.

I’m not sure if you’ll get a chance to read this post before you fly off to Greece. I still can’t believe you’ll be disconnected for ten days. That’s ten days without Skyping you! What am I going to do? I’ll just have to write everything down that I want to tell you so I can fill you in once you return – although you’ll have much more to tell me than I will!

I cannot wait to hear all about your adventures in Greece. I know I don’t have to remind you, but take lots of pictures!

xoxo, Cath

Friday Link Love

• When Lar and I were bunheads, Asian dancers in American ballet companies were few and far between. So we’re loving the new Gap ads featuring Yuan Yuan Tan.

• I love getting to explore homes online – especially ones that aren’t done by interior designers. This is one super special house tour.

• I might be a little biased towards this organization since I sit on the board, but I think fighting poverty with great music is brilliant. For those of you in the Asheville area, come out to the show next weekend!

Parkour dogs! Enough said.

• Discovering local performing art groups makes me giddy. Have any of my fellow Atlantans heard of Peach State Opera? They’re performing this September at GPC!

• Atlanta is finally getting a Topshop! (Don’t laugh, Lar. I know you’re just a 5 minute bus ride away from your giant, local TopShop)

• Lar and I are super excited about this new show. We loved her in The Office and can’t wait to see her shine on her own.

Book Festival Fever

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival was fantastic and the Edinburgh International Festival was lovely, but I was the most excited to go to the Edinburgh Book Festival when I was across the pond visiting Lar. Why? Because I always love the Decatur Book Festival, which is next weekend (yippy!), and Edinburgh is my favorite city, so how could the Edinburgh Book Festival not be amazing?!

I was not disappointed! The festival hosts 800 authors and writers for two weeks in Edinburgh’s New Town and it’s glorious. There are multiple tented author venues, two giant book store tents – one just for kids, a courtyard with literary deck chairs, and a cafe at every venue.

Lar and I were like kids in a candy store. We spent some time walking around, checking out the festival – including walking on the giant wordle platform in the courtyard.

We both walked away with four books each – some of them were free thanks to The Guardian book swap. I can’t remember all the books that Lar got, but here’s my list:

1.) I had to buy an Alexandar McCall Smith book being in Edinburgh and all, so I got this one.
2.) Lar encouraged me to purchase this novel and I’m so glad she did. I read it in 5 hours during my flight back home and already want to reread it.
3.) Got this book for free at the book swap. I’m still reading it and plan on leaving it at a local cafe when I’m done.
4.) I had to get this cute picture book for Troy.

There’s something about holding a stack of new books that makes me feel so rich – more so than clothes and home goods combined.

Lar and I were too cheap to go see any of the authors at £10 a pop, but felt we got our literary fill and spent the rest of the day lugging around our books in our Edinburgh Book Festival tote bags. *sigh* It was wonderful!

_________

Dearest Lar,

I’m so happy we got to experience the Edinburgh Book Festival together and really, really wish you could come Atlanta next weekend for the Decatur Book Festival. You’re going to miss funnel cake!

Have you read all of your books yet? Did you ever go back to the book swap and leave one of your books? I really enjoyed This is Life and want to read more by Dan Rhodes.

So glad we got to Skype today – it always puts me in the best mood 🙂

xoxo, Cath

My Twelve Hours in Amsterdam

Hello dear readers! Thank you for all the wonderful comments on Lar’s post. We have so many more photos to show from my visit to Edinburgh, but I’m starting backwards with the last night of my trip, alone, in Amsterdam.

There’s nothing like having a twelve hour layover in a foreign city at night right after saying good-bye to your twin sister. My only solace was that I got to stay at the CitizenM hotel right by the airport in Amsterdam.

When I found the hotel through Trip Advisor, I had no idea how cool it was. Had I checked out the CitizenM site ahead of time, I would have had some inkling. Turns out it was perfect for a layover (the M stands for “mobile”) in a foreign country after saying good-bye to your twin sister. I was able to distract myself with the brightly-colored decor, lobby bar and all the high tech, compact touches in the room.

The video I made below was really just to show Troy and my parents what the room looked like, but I decided to include it in this post because it’s much easier to show you the room than explain it. There’s even a second video on our YouTube channel that I took about an hour later. Feel free to watch if you want to hear my high-pitched voice again and see some more out of focus views.

The photo of the hallway below makes it look creepy, but I promise it’s not. It’s very cheery in fact.

The cell phone/remote-looking thing below is what controls everything in the room: the lighting, the temperature, the blinds, the shades, TV and the alarm clock.

The room had this little guy on the bed (below). Everyone I showed these photos to thought it was creepy, but I thought it was cute. I was so tempted to buy one in the shop in the lobby, but it would just get chewed up by my dogs at home.

So if you ever find yourself in Amsterdam (there’s a second CitizenM in the city center), London or Glasgow, I highly recommend that you stay at least one night at CitizenM. Let me know how you like it!

__________

Dearest Lar,

Those ten days with you in Edinburgh were so wonderful! You and Matt were the best hosts! I keep thinking that if I could come visit you once a month, then it wouldn’t be so bad being so far apart from each other. I’m sure Matt would love that –  ha! I’m going to start playing the lottery now so I can make that happen, ok?

You should go Glasgow and stay at the CitizenM for one night with Matt just for fun. You could consider it research for your design work because the CitizenM branding is awesome. Even the  shampoo bottles have awesome CitizenM messages on them.

Look, twin poufs!!!

Love and miss you!

xoxo, Cath

PS: I just finished my last Tunnock Tea Cake that I brought home. One more reason to come back and see you 😉

Inspired by The Newsroom

There have only been four episodes of Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom, but I’m already a big fan. I love the wordy, quick-witted characters that I’ve been missing ever since The West Wing ended its seven season run. Then there’s the pretend world of an honorable cable news station that I really wish existed – like a Bartlet presidency. Another reason I’m a fan? The clothes!

There aren’t too many photos showing off the outfits online, so below is a mix of images from the official site and a few screen captures I took. Are you ready for a superficial look at a substantial show? Here goes!

Emily Mortimor’s character takes the (fashion) cake with her uniform of button-up silk shirts, pencil skirts, pumps and simple necklaces. If I had money to buy a brand new work wardrobe these are pieces I would get:

Mortimor wears this gold necklace a lot. I’ve Googled like crazy to find out who makes it, but no luck:
Update 8/25/12: The wonderful people over at Dominque Cohen emailed me to let me know that Mortimor wears their 5 Coin Drop necklace – amongst a few other lovely pieces. Now I’m lusting after her wardrobe even more!

Alison Pill’s character has a pretty similar wardrobe. During one episode both she and Emily Mortimor are wearing similar blouses with small puff sleeves. Pill’s character wears more dresses. My favorite so far is the brown shirt dress she wears during the first episode (below left).

The show also has some really nice – and practical – hairstyles that I want to try if I can manage to wake up early enough before work:

Olivia Munn’s character is a bit more conservative. Her wardrobe so far has mostly consisted of blazers and Roland Mouret-ish dresses.

To round off this post, below are some Newsroom-inspired pieces that you can purchase now:

1. Vince blouse
2. Gap pocket shirt
3. Stella Dot layering necklace
4. J.Crew pump
5. Gorjana layer necklace
6. Banana Republic pencil skirt

Anyone else out there a big Newsroom fan? Have you noticed the clothes too?

________

Dearest Lar,

I hope The Newsroom becomes popular enough to cross the pond so you can see it. Didn’t the West Wing air in the UK? Do you remember we used to watch West Wing episodes on DVD when we were studying in Scotland?

You only have two more classes and I’ll be done with class in week – and then I’ll be flying over to see you in no time!!

xoxo, Cath

Keeping it Local

While I spent most of my weekend doing laundry and school work, I did take a few breaks. On Friday I saw Brave with some girlfriends, Saturday evening I went to hear Troy play at Harbour Bar in Decatur and then did the following on Sunday morning:

1.) A GIANT branch fell on the deck of our house Saturday evening preventing the dogs from going out into the backyard. Instead of trying to move the branch, Troy and I decided to take the pups out for a stroll around the neighborhood.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Oakhurst, it’s a neighborhood in Decatur that has a handful of shops and restaurants at the intersection of two roads. Decatur is only four square miles and Oakhurst is less than half of that, which really gives it a small town feel. The photo above makes it look more suburban than it feels.

2.) We decided to stop halfway on our walk to have brunch at Steinbeck’s – a great local pub that has better food than most restaurants.

The above photo of me isn’t an outfit shot, but for those of you who are interested, the scarf is from Anthropologie about 8 years ago and the necklace is a June Shin/ Jess Swift collaboration (similar here). The sunglasses are the same trusty Michael Stars that I’ve been wearing all summer – large enough to mostly hide the fact that I’m not wearing any make-up.

3.) I ordered the Tofu Scramble and Troy ordered ‘Da Breakfast Bowl. We shared two mimosas, which seemed like a healthier decision than each ordering a mimosa. I’m not sure why. Logic is not one of my strong suits on a Sunday morning.

4.) After brunch we walked across the street to Oakhurst Market to pick up a bottle of water before heading to the. . .

5.) Oakhurst Dog Park! Toby and Wheatie finally got the chance to run around, while we stood in the shade gulping down water.

After all that I really wanted to go home and take a nap. If only! I spent the rest of the day straightening up the house (although 24 hours later there’s no evidence of that) and doing stats homework.

_________

Dearest Lar,

Only 19 more days until I leave for Scotland!!! I can’t believe it’s coming up so soon – mostly because it feels like my stats class will never end. Once I’m done with my final, the trip will feel a lot more real.

Speaking of class, I’m so impressed with everything you’ve done at Scenehouse. I can’t wait to see your model in person!

Just for kicks, here’s a another photo of Tobs at the dog park. He’s totally in his element (note the muddy paws). For some reason he’s a lot less scared of mother nature than the indoors. I just can’t relate to that.

I hate that I didn’t get a chance to chat with you on Sunday. Let’s have a Skype date this Saturday, okay?

xoxo, Cath

Ode to HELMUT (Lang)

I’ve been a huge fan of Helmut Lang for years now. I love the line’s deconstructed and simplified designs. Like most fancy, schmancy, gorgeous designer lines, Helmut Lang pieces are mostly for the 1%. And like most designer lines, Helmut Lang also has a more “affordable” line called HELMUT – for the 10%.

This gray top was my first HELMUT piece that I purchased at a secondhand shop a few years ago and this is my brand new HELMUT piece that I purchased with a Shopbop giftcard:

HELMUT Voltage Draped Ribbed Cardigan • Madewell silk tank • The Limited skirt • Shoes from Eviva Boutique • necklace was mom’s • watch is a birthday gift from friends

I’m not really sure why my face is so overexposed in the above photo. Could be something wonky with my iPhone camera. Or it could be my inner glow shinning through. Who knows?

I originally bought this cardigan to wear to in Scotland when I visit Lar (in 24 days!!!). However, it ended up being much more delicate than I realized – a little too flimsy for a Scottish “summer.” Good thing it’s perfect for this hot Georgia summer – at least perfect for the airconditioned office.

I’m usually not so devoted to labels, but this purchase warrants a close up of my wonky eyebrows the tag and light-as-a-feather material.

Hope you all are having a wonderful Thursday/pre-Friday!

_______

Dearest Lar,

I know your week has been even busier than mine, but I hope you’ve had a little bit of downtime.

I think I’ll just have to crack into my winter clothes when I pack for my trip to Scotland next month. I’m getting so used to the intense heat here (but still complain about it all the time), that I’ll be freezing in the 50 degree weather. I mean, I’m going to have to pack socks for goodness sakes! Apart from working out I haven’t worn a pair of socks in months!

Do you have anything fun planed for the weekend? I might go see Brave with Brie and Michelle and then I’m going to spend the rest of my time working on my stats paper and other homework. Exciting, right? My final is in two weeks – eep!

Love and miss you as always,

xoxo Cath

Visiting Rhodes Hall

As a late birthday present, Troy took me to Rhodes Hall because he knows how much I love house museums. Rhodes Hall was the retirement home of Amos Rhodes. That’s Rhodes as in Rhodes Furniture – still bringing affordable furniture to the masses!

Check out how my hair went all limp in the heat. I swear it looked a little bit better when I left the house for the day. A little. . .

Secondhand top • Urban Outfitter black denim shorts • Dolce Vita sandals • secondhand necklace and bracelet • Michael Stars sunglasses

Rhodes Hall was built in 1904, designed to look like a (small) German castle, and is now one of the only remaining mansions that once lined Peachtree Street in Atlanta. It’s sandwiched by skyscrapers and across the street from a Shell station, but you can’t tell in the photos below. You can almost image what the estate looked like at the turn of last century when it was 114 acres:

The Victorian era isn’t my favorite, but I still loved exploring Rhodes Hall. It’s always entertaining to see what the rich liked to spend their hoards of money on. For example, Mr. Rhodes had the windows by the main staircase painted with images of the confederate army almost forty years after the war ended.

My favorite room was the pink parlor with the elaborate chandelier. Well played, Mrs. Rhodes, well played.

Today Rhodes Hall is one part house museum, one part event space and one part headquarters of The Georgia Trust. If you live in Atlanta or are visiting the city and love house museums as much as me, head to 1516 Peachtree Street (across from the Shell station) and take a tour.

__________

Dearest Lar,

Touring house museums always reminds me of our family vacations. I think it wasn’t until I was 16 that I realized most families didn’t plan their vacations around historic homes.

Only 26 more days until I fly to Scotland to visit you! We’ll have to do some house/castle tours in addition to going to Spoon. I can’t wait!!!

xoxo, Cath

TGIF Link Love

We added our names and would like to think talented illustrator, Sara Soderholm, was inspired by AsianCajuns when she painted this, but probably not. . . 😉

• A review of some of the best iPhone photo apps on Kris Atomic.

• In search of the perfect leather tote? Search no more!

• Don’t bring your old clothes to the thrift store, instead try one of these 13 options.

• Awesome illustrated animated gif.

• This DIY dip dye maxi skirt would look lovely with a chambray button up tied at the waist. Weekend project perhaps?

• Loose waves hair tutorial with a flat iron.

Hope you have a lovely weekend!

Happy July 5th!

I realize that most self-respecting bloggers plan ahead and have a 4th of July themed post the day of, but not this one! Instead I’m a day late and a dollar short, but at least Lar did an awesome post on the quirky culture of the very people we split from 236 years ago! Independence! I just wish skittling had caught on here and not in bowling form.

Madewell v-neck • H&M skirt • Havianas • Clare Vivier purse • necklace from Shopbop

I had a lovely low key July4: brunch at Sun in My Belly, made this quinoa salad, hung out with some friends and ate leftover ice cream birthday cake at my parent’s. Is it bad that I celebrated our country’s independence with ice cream cake, didn’t see any fireworks and was just really excited to sleep in on a weekday?!

How ’bout you guys? Were you more patriotic than me? Let’s hope so!

_____________

Dearest Lar,

Do you remember how much we used to love celebrating July 4th? It’s hard to believe that we were together at the beach just a year ago. It seems like you’ve been out of this country for longer than a year! Too bad we can’t take the train down to Brighton when I come to visit and have a beach weekend. How fun would that be?

Do you have a busy weekend planned? Let’s Skype this Sunday!

xoxo, Cath
