Busy Sunday: Outfit Post Cheating

Hello lovelies! Lar, here. Stuck in bed on a steamy Atlanta Sunday with what I think is strep throat. Delightful, eh? I’ll try to not cough on you!

What I should be doing is helping Cath move (she’ll be about 5-10 minutes closer to me in her new place- woohoo!). Argh, I hate feeling like an invalid, especially because I know Cath is stressed today and I want to be there to lend a non-contagious hand.

Since Cath and I are not in any shape to be taking outfit photos today, I thought I would do a little cheat and show you what we wore last week when the weather decided to go all San Francisco on us and dip into the 60s as a high (we’re usually in the 80s and 90s this time of the year). Cooler weather means layers, even tights, which I usually can’t stand wearing. I love the way they look, but as a bunhead for more than 15 years it’s nice have have your legs free after so many years of incarceration. Oh and check out my brogues! They aren’t Prada (where for art thou,  color blocked platform?) but thrifted Anne Klein finds!

(Below: Lawd, girlll, what is going on with your har?! Apologies, readers- I’ve given up. The haircut is still a few weeks away, but I can’t even be bothered to run a comb through my mane these last couple of days. Long hair and great amounts of Southern humidity do not mix well with me. I’ve always been hair lazy, but add frizz and I can’t even pretend it looks beachy-chic any more).

On moi/Lar: Betsy Johnson tee (hand-me-down from well-dressed cousin), dress is Ramona West vintage, tights unknown, brogues Finders Keepers, bag is Anne Taylor, trench is DKNY (both years old).

Cath has always been much better at mane-tenance (get it? sorry – stuck in bed all day does bad things to my blog writing). I aspire to be like her in the hair department. Though it is thoughtful of me to give you a good way to tell us apart, non? Lar = disheveled mess with a pouf, Cath = sleek, gorgeous locks regardless of style.

On Cath: H&M blazer and trousers, F21 leopard tee, Madewell belt and shoes, bracelets thrifted and Gorjana.

Happy moving, Kitcath! And to the rest of you, happy lazy Sunday!

Nifty Thrifting: A list

We hope you guys had a chance to enter our give-away earlier this week and our Lulus discount! If you missed out, no worries! This post is for you (and me. . . and anyone else trying to save a buck).

I know I’m not the first “fashionista” trying to scrimp and save. When I say that, I don’t mean I’ve placed myself on a temporary shopping ban. I usually don’t cut out all shopping, but I just always keep my buying to a minimal at all times – I think especially compared to a lot of self-professed fashionistas/style bloggers.

Don’t get me wrong. I dream big. And I would love to spend a lot. I fall in love with the latest Mulberry bag and drool over the clothes in Anthropologie catalogs. I file away digital images on my desktop of Celine bags and Prada shoes seen on street style blogs. I love the escapism and fantasy of fashion, but very rarely do I literally buy into the fantasy. For one, I can’t afford them (and pay rent, and save and be all mature about my roth IRA- sighhh- adulthood). Secondly, should I?

And Cath is the same. We both love fashion/style, but we very rarely pay full price for anything over $100, and most of my recent purchases have been thrift finds ($3 belt, $4.50 for a stripped button up, etc.). One day I dream of having a really well-made purse, but at the same time it makes me a little queasy to think I would wear an accessory that could easily pull a bunch of  families in Rwanda out of poverty for good (especially when that couple of thousands is applied to women getting micro loans).

Well, enough fashionista proselytizing! I get long-winded when I stay up too late! All of this is to say, I put a list of thrift and second-hand stores that Cath and I love at the end of this post. Most are local, but one is online. Sifting through racks of pre-owned clothes is not everyone’s idea of good time, but it softens the blow of not being able to escape into a land where we can actually afford the fantasy.

On Lar: Thrifted jacket and purse via Finders Keepers • UO dress (on sale years ago) • Jeffrey Campbell boots • American Eagle belt

On Cath: Boyfriend’s shirt • Blank shorts • MIA shoes • tote from Scotland

So About This Moving to the West Coast Thing

Doesn’t Cath look so cute and west coasty in this photo (above)? So cute in fact that she should move there when I go? Yeah! I think so too!

So it’s not definite that I’ll be in California just yet (Boston and Edinburgh are the other glittery possibilities), but this whole leave-your-twin-sister-for-2-to-3-years is stressing me out no matter if it’s north, east or west of the ATL. I haven’t actually given it much thought because (crosses arms and pulls grumpy face). . . I don’t wanna!

On Lar: LNA dress • thrifted sweater from Finders Keepers • necklace c/0 NOVICAKenneth Jay Lane cuff • Jeffrey Campbell sandals • Deux Lux purse

On Cath: Hat an top, F21 • Necklace, local boutique • Shorts, Urban Outfitters • Belt, thrifted J.Crew from Finders Keepers • Clogs, MIA • Sunnies, thrifted

I keep telling people I’m trying to be zen about the whole thing and just go where life takes me, but who am I kidding?! I like plans, I like goals, I like charts, and calendars and to-do lists! AND! I like being only 20 minutes (at most) away from my twinie at any given time. I guess my only choice is to lasso Scotland, Massachusetts, and California into Georgia. Totally doable. Any other ideas? Anyone?

In less grumpy news . . . stay tuned, lovely readers! We are going to have a Lulus giveaway contest in our next post. And the great part about that? Even if you don’t win you’ll still get a special AsianCajuns discount code. Woohoo! I’m excited cuz I’ve had my eye on these awesome tribal shorts.

Small? Yes! Cool? Hopefully!

Hello dearest AsianCajuns readers! Did you think Lar and I had totally fallen off the face of the earth blogosphere? My deepest apologies! Our lack of blogging was due to a mix of post wedding craziness (who knew that existed?!), settling Lar in her new house, friends in town, going out of town, and lots of work, work, work, work. Things are quieting down now, which is good because I’ve been going through blogging withdrawal. It feels good to be back, reading your blogs and comments.

Now on to the point of this post. I’ve entered my little studio apartment in Apartment Therapy’s Small/Cool contest! It might not sound that exciting, but I’m a bit obsessed with Apartment Therapy and follow the Small/Cool contest closely every year. So even just seeing my studio on the Apartment Therapy website makes me over-the-top giddy. You can see my full entry here.

Entries have to include five photographs of the apartment/condo and a floor plan. Lar helped me clean and style my apartment for the amazing photos that Troy took. Of course we took a lot more than five photos, so I’m including some of the images that didn’t make it into my entry – like the close up photo of Jacques Rock Star (a prezie from Lar 13 years ago) above.

I ended up not including any photos of my closet or bathroom in my entry, which was probably for the best because
1.) no matter how much I reorganize my closet, it still looks messy and chaotic
2.) my bathroom is so tiny that it’s pretty much impossible to get a good photo of it. Troy was precariously perched on the tub when he took this one:

If I had planned on living in my studio for longer than a year, I’m moving out in a month, I would have painted the closet a dark, dusty blue/gray. Instead I kept the ugly, masking tape yellow that was painted on all the walls by the property management company right before I moved in:

I wanted to include this photo of the kitchen in the entry, but finally decided to use another one that looked less cluttered. Unfortunately none of my entry photos really show off my love of books – you can see a sliver of my bookcases the photo on the left:

And of course I still have my invisible bookshelves and jewelry board that I’ve had in my last 3 apartments – I wrote about them here in 2007.

And because I want to brag a little bit more about Lar’s styling skills, here’s what my couch area looked like before setting up the space for the photo:

Here’s what it looks like after Lar works her magic:

So thank you soooo much Lar and Troy – I would never have entered without help from both of you!

And thank you to any of you lovely readers who vote for me on Apartment Therapy. The apartment with the most favorites wins – here’s hoping!

The Countdown(s) is On!

The wedding countdown is over. It’s come and gone. Thank you to all of you for leaving such sweet comments about Lar and Matt’s wedding. Believe it or not, Lar hasn’t had any internet or cell phone access since the wedding (she and Matt have been staying at a lovely vineyard in north Georgia) so she hasn’t even seen the photos yet!

I have to admit that it’s been depressing not having my sister around. So I’m counting down until her honeymoon is over. Is that weird? Either way, she’ll be back tomorrow – woohoo! She bought me two amazing gifts for being her maid of honor including these beautiful tights from Anthro:

It’s been coldish in Atlanta for the past week and perfect for some fancy tight wearing!

Another countdown? It’s less than a month until our friend Mike Killeen plays two CD release shows at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur on April 22. If you’re in the Atlanta area, make sure to come by that night.

Hope you all are having a wonderful week. I’m sure we’ll be showing more wedding photos here shortly.

And for those of you in the Chicago area, let me know if you’re free next week. I’ll be in town for a conference and would love to meet some of my fellow bloggers!

In Defense of Purple

I stumbled upon an amazing tent sale in Decatur this weekend that was filled with super-discounted Crate & Barrel items. I missed the opening rush, but still walked away 3 great finds –  two lavender-colored quilted pillow shams and a purple throw pillow. It wasn’t until I brought my items home that I realized how many purple items I have collected over the years.

These were just the handful of purple things that were in my living room/bedroom:

I honestly didn’t realize how much I liked purple until today – and it’s not just a particular type of purple (as you can see in the photo above), it’s every shade of the hue. So, that got me thinking about fashion and how each season has a handful of “it” colors – and how it’s rarely ever purple. Why is that? Is it too witchy? Too old fashion? No one wore a purple dress to the Golden Globes. Pantone has never chosen it as the Color of the Year. And Prince was really the last one to really rock the color – or at least give it its own song.

So in defense of the color, I pulled together some of my favorite purple fashion photos just to prove to myself that I’m not alone in my love for it.

I love the jewel tone purples Emma Watson wears in this editorial. It almost makes me want to get a subscription again to Teen Vogue.

More of a grayish purple, Tim Walker did a brilliant job mirroring the Mulberry outfits with purple hydrangeas:

{The Women’s Room}

I absolutely love it when there’s a little hint of purple in an outfit – probably explains why I own 4 purple scarves.

{The Sart}

I think lavender is flattering on everyone. I’m on the lookout for a sweater just like this one.

Lar and I use to read John Bellair books when we were young and I remember one of his characters, Mrs. Zimmerman, had a whole house decorated in purple. She’s an old, eccentric character and I’m a little worried that I’ll become Mrs. Zimmerman. I might start making a conscious effort to start buying more gray things. . . I’ll keep you posted.

Help Us Choose Cath’s Maid of Honor Dress!!!

So this whole low-key wedding/elopement involves a surprising bit of event planning. I know most of you are like “well durrr, Lar, we could have told you that.” but I think part of me thought I could get away with just doing the fun stuffs: making some simple decor, eat some cake, buy a dress(es), etc. Oooo how wrong I’ve been!

Luckily Cath’s dress is on the fun side of the planning, and having you guys help us out will make it all the more awesome.

A little background for you:
I want Kitcath to be comfortable and as the atmosphere will be very relaxed and informal, we aren’t talking ball gown, but a spring/summer cocktail dress. The images below are the inspiration: vintage, washed out colors, relaxed cut, something she can wear again – for reals (I’m completely blanking on the sources for these images, if they are yours, let me know!).

Exhibit A:
From Modcloth, it’s a dusky dusky champagne pink with some interesting pleating going on at the bodice.

Exhibit B:
Also from Modcloth, this dress is a more coral pink. We would accessorize it with a sash and some flowers and a not black bra.

Exhibit C:
Our last contender is from Madewell, it needs some steaming because the crinkles distract from the details on this dress. Cath would probably have get it taken in around her ribs too so it was quite so billowy on top. It’s a dusky gray/lavender in person.

So which one will it be?! Let us know which is your favorite and why by leaving a comment.

This is totally like Say Yes to The Dress, minus the drama and the money and the overly emotional family members. Win, win, win!

Thanks for your help, guys! We can’t wait to read what you think!

The AsianCajuns Meet The Selby!!!

It’s like the Sartorialist all over again – except this time it was at Jackson Fine Arts and there were more photography people and fewer fashiony people. (For those of you not familiar with The Selby, check out his blog here. It is the ultimate in voyeuristic sophistication – I mean what’s more sophisticated that greedily eying wealthy, eccentric peoples’ closets?!).

Todd Selby was very nice, even when Cath and I didn’t recognize him at first- whoops! He even let us take a photo of his shoes- aren’t they lovely?

Ohhh and look at this! Last night was not the first time we “met” Todd. Way back in the day, August 25, 2008 to be exact, Cath and I did a tribute post to The Selby and look who commented!!! Here is the faux Selby shoot we took back in the day- click here.

Below Cath is waiting to ambush talk to Todd with his book in hand- which I stupidly forgot to get signed in my oh-so-cool way of meeting celebrities (“Hiii Hi Hi! Love your work! Your shoes are awesome ohmygosh can we get  a picture with you? Oh cool cool yeah awesome Thank YOU!” Just a warning to you readers-who-will-be-celebrities, my charming way will make you weak in the knees).

Oh yeah! And this is what we wore.

On Cath:
Necklace, Rockit Boutique in Decatur | Sweater is H&M | Top is from LA | Skirt is from???

On moi:
Necklace is also from Rockit | Shirt is thrifted | Skirt is from a small boutique in Birmingham | Belt is a gift from this lovely lady | Boots are over-the-knee Jeffrey Campbell

Lastly, in the spirit of seeing Mr. Selby last night, I took a pic of Cath’s apartment. I just love it there. It’s teeny but in a cozy way not in a claustrophobic way, and it always smells so good. Cath is, I guarantee, the neatest person you’ll ever meet (I mean “neat” in every way possible) and she has such a good eye. I’m definitely having her help me when I move to Matt’s place.

Speaking of which (are you guys still there? Sorry this is such an epically long post! Way to go if you made it this far!), Cath ordered three possible maid-of-honor dresses, and we want you guys to tell us which you like best. Keep an eye out in the next few posts!

Happy Saturday, Readers! Tell us what you’re up to this weekend!

A Little Bit of Faux Fur

Most of the ice from last week is finally starting to melt and it seemed like everyone was out and about today. It was even warm enough for me to wear my coat unbuttoned. Of course that didn’t stop me from wearing my cozy faux fur scarf.

Lar and I met up for coffee to discuss wedding details. I’m her unofficial wedding planner/maid of honor. Considering that Lar wants an itty-bitty, teeny-tiny, step-above-a-courthouse-wedding, I think I can handle the job. I’ve already made a spreadsheet! I’ll let Lar tell you the details as we figure it all out.

I’ve been wearing my new knit hat from Squash Blossom Boutique all weekend. It was 50% off, so I felt like I could get it even though I’m trying to save up for a decent bridesmaid dress.

Outfit details: Blank jeans, Nine West booties, H&M faux fur scarf, American Apparel shirt, Tuelle coat. The cute wooden telephone pin is a Christmas gift that my friends got me Young Blood Gallery. I love it.

I’m so happy that tomorrow is a holiday. I’ll have to spend most of the day working, but at least I’ll be able to sleep in. I hope you all get the day off too!

Wearing Boots on the Beach

How was everyone’s Christmas? Lar and I had a great week. Spending the holiday on Tybee Island with family and friends is pretty much as good as it gets – delicious home cooked meals, great company, daily frolicing on the beach and three crazy dogs running around non-stop.

Lar and the rest of the gang are still in Tybee. Troy and I only stayed for a few days because we both had to get back to work this week, hurumph. We took a couple of photos at the beach on our last day. It was cold and windy, but Wheatie didn’t seem to mind.

I’ll leave you with this pic of my Simply Bags bag because I love how it fit right into the scenery at Tybee (you can see Lar’s Simply Bags bag being attacked by alligators here). Is it weird that it makes me giddy when my bags match my vacation?

Once Lar gets back to Atlanta with her camera, we’ll have a lot more fun photos to show off from the trip and some super exciting news that I won’t give away, but here’s a hint, it rhymes with schmen-schmagment.
