Getting Twin Haircuts

Cath and I have decided that enough is enough with our long hair. We’re hopping on the Alexa Chung bandwagon and clipping our hair just above our shoulders. The last time we had hair that short was 10+ years ago, and I don’t think we’ve had matching hair styles since this photo:

We’re going for the slightly longer disheveled bob (with long bangs). We might do the ombre highlights once we’ve mustered the courage to do the cut (our appointment is this Saturday afternoon). We’re going together for moral support, and hitting up my most favoritist hair stylist in all of Atlanta, Robin at Dada. She cuts hair like a dream. (Marcus at Soge is our man for color).

We’re hoping to look like this post-cut (including the extra 5 inches Alexa has on us- and those lovely eyes):

p.s. Alexa also happens to be our mix (dad is Chinese and her mom is Caucasian). So not exactly an AsianCajun, but an AsianBritain (?)
p.p.s. Speaking of British people/things. I have some news to share that has to do with my move and Britain (I unintentionally mislead you with that whole “I’m moving to the West Coast!” thing). more to come in the next post.

Book Signing Outfits

Oooohh, this blog post title makes it kind of sound like our own book signing event! Ha! Chapter 1: Asian, Chapter 2:Cajuns, The End. As Lar mentioned in her Magical Monday post, we headed over to Feast for Mary Kay Andrews’ summer book launch earlier this week. Lar’s favorite part about the launch? The amazingly delicious brownies from Sweet N’ Sinful. Nom, nom, nom.

Lar and I are both saving our copies of Summer Rental for our Maryland beach trip in three weeks. I can’t wait!

Lar’s outfit: Tracy Feith for Target dress, Unleashed espadrilles and Deux Lux bag.

Cath’s (my) outfit details: Second hand Rebecca Taylor tank, Forever 21 skirt, H&M belt, Madewell heels, necklace and purse from Vivid Boutique in Decatur.

Yep, that’s a weird face in the following photo, but I wanted to include a close-up of my nails. I don’t know the exact color, but it’s a gray-ish/green-ish Essie color and I love it. I’m not usually the nail polish-buying type, but I might break down and get a bottle if I can figure out the color. Sew Psyched, maybe?

Tomorrow morning I’m waking up at 5:30 a.m. to hit up the giant annual Baptist church yard sale in Decatur. Here’s hoping I’ll find some good storage solutions for my new (but old) itty-bitty house. Wish me luck! I’ll be posting updates on Twitter.

Lar’s In a Music Video (With 50 Awesome Atlantans)

“Open Your Eyes” by Oryx and Crake from Oryx and Crake on Vimeo.

Our friends Tom and Jamie at Chronicle are the masterminds behind this video for the amazing local band Oryx and Crake. About 50 Altantans web-camed themselves for an entire day at work (myself included) and were then spliced together by editor Aaron Byrd.

Even if you guys aren’t interested in watching me making funny faces (in a fur hat), you should totally listen to this incredible song. And tell me what you think!

p.s. Was your Monday magical? I’m just off now to meet Kitcath at Miso! Yum yum!

Magical Monday

Most Mondays just suck, don’t they? Going back to work, going back to school, coming back from a vacation. but I really think this Monday is going to be kind of great.

Cath and I do have to go to our respective jobs, but post-work there are some delightful going-ons, which will make the first nine hours of Monday much more palatable.

1) Meeting author Mary Kay Andrews for a launch party for her new book at Feast Restaurant in Decatur! And you guys can come too! We got our tickets here, but I they will be some at the door too!

2) MISO IZAKAYA! I promise you that deserves all caps and an exclamation point because Cath and I eat here about twice a week. Chloe of Chow Down Atlanta (and awesome shooting teacher) introduced us a few weeks ago, and we are sooo addicted. And tomorrow the amazing chef/owner Guy Wong is rolling out new additions to the already out-of-this-world menu! Seriously you guys, when you visit us, this is the first place we’ll take you!

What about you, wonderful readers? How’s your Monday shaping up? Come join us if you can at Feast and Miso. I swear it will make your Monday magical!

If Dorothy Draper Lived in a Bird House

Cath and I designed a birdhouse for this Sunday’s Solarium Patio Party auction.* Doesn’t that sound fancy?! Well, the party certainly is, but not the AsianCajuns. So we had to bring the fancy to our birdhouse in the form of Dorothy Draper (over-the-top interior designer extraordinaire)!

Here’s a photo of the fancy lady herself:

The key to painting a birdhouse a la DD? Don’t hold back on color, gilt, and pattern. I sure hope there are some more-is-more birds out there. I’d be so embarrassed if our birdhouse sat on the market, ignored by cardinals and finches in search of beige siding.

Above: the Dorothy Draper birdhouse. Below: Dorothy Draper’s actual designs (most of these images are from the Dorothy Draper Exhibit in New York).

I love her exuberance, don’t you? Big and bold and color everywhere. I’m sure some of you are wishing for a beige-y Restoration Hardware catalog about right now – and I can totally understand that. I’m not sure I could actually live in a DD house, but I sure hope our winged friends can!

What do you guys have on tap for the weekend? Patio parties? Birdhouse painting? Do tell!

xoxo,

Lar

Anything You Wanna Know About Us?

Hiya Lovelies!

So I updated our About Us page. I figured it was time (4 years and counting). Also, we figured if Mr. Sartorialist himself didn’t know what “Cajun” meant, others might wonder too. Add the “Asian” in front of the “Cajun” and then you’ve got people really confused.

I’m not sure if anyone actually checks out our “About Us” page, but if you do/did, are there other things we haven’t answered? Seriously, ask away! We’ll do a post with some of the questions and answers, and post all of the Q and A up on our “About Us” page – flesh it out a bit.

In the meantime, here’s a collage of weekend pics to keep your eyes occupied while you think of some questions:

Decatur Arts Fest is Today! Where You At?

On Cath: H&M tunic as top • Limited skirt • Dolce Vita shoes • Purse and necklace via Vivid Boutique in Decatur

On Lar/Moi: H&M top • AE shorts • J. Crew belt • Duex Lux purse • Gladiators from shop in Florence many years ago • Necklace from Snoozer Loser

Seriously, we wish you guys were all local so we could bump into you today at our favorite art event of the year: the Decatur Arts Festival. There’s gonna be painting, sculpture, leather work, glass blowing, funnel cakes, lemonade! How soon can you get here?

How the AsianCajuns Keep Their Cool: New Orleans Snoballs

Hotlanta is earning it’s name this week. And the fun part? Matt and I have decided to try to save money (“and the world!” says Matt. Hey, stop reading over my shoulder while I write!) by not turning on our air-conditioning for most of the summer. Gahhhhhhh. Readers, you can look forward to gorgeous outfit pics of Cath and a shimmery glistening puddle from me!

One antidote (apart from sneaking on the air when he’s not looking)? Snoballs!!! Notice the lack of a “w” in “snow.” That means we aren’t talking about those things that make snowmen. You eat ’em!

Snoballs are a lot like snow cones, but better. Wayyyy better. The ice is shaved, so it’s light and fluffy and not chunky crystals you get in a cone. You add your favorite syrups on top (New Orleans Snoball Cafe in Decatur has organic flavors and flavors sweetened with agave instead of just sugar in addition to your usual Hurricane, Pink Lemonade, etc.). Then – if you want to be really Cajun about it – you put condensed milk on top, and/or put ice cream in the center of your snoball! On a hot summer’s day, it’s bliss!

Lucky for me (and less lucky for my diet plan), New Orleans Snoball Cafe is right by where I work! It’s much more fulfilling (in every way) than a water-cooler break.

On Cath: sweater H&M • tank from Lavish in San Francisco • skirt F21 • purse from Vivid Boutique in Decatur • shoes MIA

On Lar/Moi: thrifted mens shirt • AE shorts • necklance from Rockit Boutique Decatur • shoes Jeffrey Campbell • purse Deux Lux • cuff Express

My Boyfriend, Troy Cono

Most of you know Matt, Lar’s husband, nerd-glasses-wearer, doctor scientist and owner of a fantastic mustache. But you may not know Troy, my boyfriend. I mention him frequently, but rarely post photos of him on the blog because I want to respect his privacy. Why should he have his face plastered everywhere just because his girlfriend is a blogger? Am I right?

Well right or wrong, I’ve decided to forgo that mindset because I want to take a minute to brag about him – ha!

Last Wednesday Troy played on the square in Decatur and sounded amazing! That’s right, Troy is a musician (singer, songwriter, guitar player) and an amazing performer – yeah I’m biased, but it’s true! The concert was one of the first times he’s played his original songs in front of so many Decatur friends (he usually plays covers for his paid gigs) and everyone loved it. The whole event made me swell up with pride even though I can take absolutely no credit for his talent and drive whatsoever as a musician. I just sit back, listen and enjoy.

The photo above makes it look like just one person was in the audience – whoops. Girlfriend/photographer fail. Just believe me when I say it was a great turnout. Tons of friends, family, colleagues and locals showed up for the event.

Want to see a proud girlfriend face?

Horrible. I have no idea what I’m laughing at or why my eyes are closed, but I’m including the photo so you can see the whole outfit I was wearing for the concert, which took place midday so I’m wearing my work clothes.

Asos jacket (hand me down from Lar), thrifted shirt (gift from Lar), Limited skirt, Madewell heels and necklace from Vivid Boutique in Decatur.

I wore my sparkly gold Sally Hansen nail strips for over 2 weeks. They ended up chipping during my move this past weekend, but I’m so impressed with how long they last. I’ve heard from a few people that the solid color nail strips don’t hold up as well, so I’ll be sticking to the sparkles and patterns.

Ever the supportive sis, Lar came out for the concert too.

Lar’s outfit details: thrifted marching band jacket, Target shirt, Blank jeans, and Frye boots.

I absolutely love the detailing on Lar’s jacket. It brings me back to my high school marching band days – oh yes, I was intimidatingly cool in high school as a band geek. Any mellophone or french horn players out there? Woot, woot!

All in all, a fantastic outdoor concert and perfect weather. Thank you to everyone who was able to come out and see Troy – I know it meant the world to him!

And thanks to everyone for the kind words about my move. It was a hot and long Sunday, but I’m now officially moved into my new space – Troy’s itty, bitty house in Decatur. I’m surrounded by boxes and bare walls as I write this post and it’s driving me crazy. I’ll be spending the next few weeks after work unpacking and decorating. I promise I’ll post photos once I can get the place looking somewhat presentable.
