Cath Gets a Rain Barrel (and goes Westward)

After a long, rough week at work I spent most of my weekend recovering, cleaning the house, hanging out with friends, and relaxing. The only obligation I had was an one-hour rain barrel workshop. It was at 10 a.m., which is early for me on a Saturday. I rolled out of bed and was about to put on shorts and a t-shirt, but reached for this sundress instead. Dresses are a little more forgiving on the ol’ waist (no muffin top, woot, woot!). The dress is a little low cut for Saturday morning, so I added the shirt at the last minute.

Turns out getting up for a rain barrel class early on a Saturday is completely worth it. I’ve been wanting a rain barrel for some time, but didn’t really realize how great they are until I attended the workshop. Did you know that rain barrels help catch the initial, most polluted inch of rain from your roof? Instead of running off into the stream, the water collects in the barrel and can be used to water plants and then filter through the soil. Plus, the barrels are originally used to transport olives. Drill a few holes in the sides and you’ve got yourself a recycled rain barrel. Mother nature FTW!

Outfit details: Sunglasses and shirt from U.O., dress from a local boutique, AsianCajuns name necklace, and my Birkinstocks.

My shirt kept stretching out throughout the day, so I had to re-knot it twice. Nevertheless, I’m still a fan of summer layering and will probably wear this outfit again before the summer is over.

It took forever to get Wheatie to look at the camera. Dogs aren’t great models – not enough focus. Wheatie is sporting his summer shave, which isn’t as cute as his full fur coat, but at least he’s cool in the never ending Atlanta heat.

I start my first graduate class a week from today. According to my calculations, if I take one class a semester, I’ll get my masters in public administration in about 10 years – ha! I might up it to two classes a semester if I can afford it in the spring.

Hope you all had a great start to the week! I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this week will be better than last week. I know for a fact that next week will be great. How can I be so sure? Because next Thursday, Lar and I are attending this:

That’s right, the talented Current Elliott designers and the creative director of Kate Spade will be at the Lenox Bloomies Thursday, Aug. 25 from 5 to 8 p.m. Current Elliott and Kate Spade have joined forces to create Westward. I hope some of you locals can make it and hang out with us. Don’t forget to RSVP. Westward ho!

Lar’s Re-doing Her Kitchen (and losing her marbles)

It might seem like really bad timing on my part: 1) make plans to move abroad, 2) redo kitchen a month before leaving. Recipe for disaster – oh and I hate disastrous recipes. But we aren’t as crazy as we sound (or so I like to think). My hubs and I received a generous monetary gift from my in-laws for our wedding. Said in-laws have oh-so-wonderfully agreed to stay in our house (in our hood) while we are away. So we thought, why not make the kitchen more usable?! By usable we mean: installing a dishwasher and ripping out old uneven countertops and generally making the space less of a dark cave.

So we went marble shopping yesterday!

Look how excited I am by the marble slabs (above) and how steadfast and assured Matt is by this swirly granite (below):

Sadly, we learned that just days before our arrival to the Slab Farm (that’s what Atlanta Kitchen and Baths calls it), a worker had been moving all the lovely marble in our price range and broke it! Luckily said marble mover was not hurt (phew!), but we had to leave empty handed (sigh).

We needed some sort of consolation prize, and luckily the Slab Farm is just steps from one of my favorite bakeries in the whole wide world: Southern Sweets.

Wow! is right, piggy chef. Consolation prize: rustic cherry pie – ooooo I’d loose my marbles any day to  eat this! Slice of heaven, this is!

Can’t resist, must show you another shot:

It’s a lovely space. I believe one of the bakers is an artist, there’s an artist studio tucked off to the left of the shop, and wonderfully colorful paintings covering the walls. And you can eat your slice of pie on a soft buttery leather sofa. Delightful!

Oh, right, ahem, back to the kitchen. Please do not judge this photo below. This is the state of our kitchen at the moment: cabinet doors off, souls bared. Eesh! Can you tell even the camera could barely stand to look – just a quick blurry glimpse.

The plans are to prime/paint/demolish and then have the countertops and backsplash installed so it looks a little something like this:

(This is just one of many inspiration photos I’ve gathered, and I’m sorry I don’t know where it’s from. If it’s yours, please let me know and I’ll drop a link in straight away).

So that’s my weekend(s) job! What you lovelies up to?

Lunch Break!

Cath mentioned this in the last post, but we’ve been trying to maximize our sister time before I move to Scotland next month. Even though I’m a West Ender now, we both work in Decatur, just about a 5 minute walk apart – yippee! So we try to meet up for lunch at least once a week.

These pics are from last week’s meet-up at Sushi Avenue – nom nom nom. I’m actually a sushi wuss. I only eat uber-americanized pieces like California rolls and crispy shrimp rolls. Cath has much more sophisticated tastes and goes for the raw fish pieces.

Hope you, lovelies, are having a wonderful week! Let us know what you’re up to. My brain has been a bit fuzzy with all this upcoming move stress, so I’m sorry if this is a short babbly post. Any tips for mid-week de-stressing? Happy hump day!

On Cath: thrifted Longchamp bag • H&M tee • Gap skirt and flats • necklace from clothing swap • bracelets from local artisans • Agnes Scott ring

On Lar: Dress worn as top from Creatures of ComfortCitizens of Humanity skirt • necklace from Spotlight Boutique • sandals from Squash Blossom boutique

Yogurt Break

One of the things I’ll miss the most when Lar moves to Scotland is being able to meet her for a couple of minutes after work or for a quick lunch. In the summer, our meet ups usually involve New Orleans Sno Balls or mixed drinks at Leon’s or frozen yogurt from Yogurt Tap. Maybe we’ll figure out a system where she can go to a yogurt shop in Scotland and I’ll go to Yogurt Tap and we’ll Skype each other. Has the frozen yogurt craze hit Scotland or is it too cold there for that to happen?

Lar’s outfit details: second hand shirt, H&M tank, H&M shorts, Target belt, and Unleashed espadrilles.

Our AsianCajuns necklaces are perfect for layering. The top necklace is from Squash Blossom Boutique. It’s three different colored threads wrapped around a cord.

Pink summery toes! Hey Lar, if for some reason you think you won’t be wearing those espadrilles much in Scotland, you could always leave them with your beloved sis in Atlanta for safe keeping *cough, cough*.

Ahem. Moving on.

Outfit details: Forever 21 shirt and pants, Madewell shoes and second hand Longchamp bag.

This is probably not my most flattering outfit. The shirt is cut wide and the pants tapper so it makes my middle section look all blehhhh. Ah well, it’s one of my most comfortable work outfits and I just tell myself that it looks better in person than in photos.

A close up of the shirt. I don’t usually buy patterned shirts, but I loved the colors on this one.

I hope you all had a great weekend. I’ve spent the past two days at home trying not to spend money, doing work around the house and wearing some very unfashionable outfits. Needless to say, you won’t be seeing photos of me from this weekend!

This Is What I Think of Fridays and Weekends

That’s my “Hey there, Sailor Friday” look. Okay maybe I need to work on it a little as to not scare Friday away, but regardless you get the “I’m excited!” memo.

Cath and I started the weekend early: Thursday for lunch to be exact. We invited our good friend and fellow blogger Eli to come down and try the new No. 246 restaurant in Decatur.

Doesn’t Cath look like she dressed for 246? She looks perfect!

On Cath: Freebie sunnies • Squash Blossom top • Limited skirt • Dolce Vita shoes • thrifted Longchamp bag

On Lar/moi: thrifted blouse (love the fans on it) • Zara skirt • Ashley Watson recycled leather bag • Hunter boots

Lar: Welcome to My Hood

You hear Cath and I wax poetic about Decatur all the time (it’s been our “home” town for the past 10 years): one of those small towns that happens to be six miles from the heart of a big city (Hotlanta!), a festival every month of the year, great boutiques, great food, great people, etc. Well, since I got married back in March, I actually haven’t been a true Decaturite. Now I’m a West Ender.

As a West Ender that means I’m a true Atlantan, just south of downtown. It’s not a neighborhood that a lot of Atlantans know much about, or if they do I usually get that “I hope you carry a gun on you” nose wrinkle when I tell people I live there. It’s true that the West End has seen wealthier days, but that doesn’t mean that as you roll through town you should lock your car doors twice and not make eye contact. West Enders are even friendlier than Decaturites (when Cath and I first moved to Decatur from DC it freaked us out when people whom we didn’t know would wave and smile – you just don’t do that in DC).

The West End is also awesomely historic. Most of the homes are brick bungalows built in the 1920s or gorgeous Victorians and Queen Anne homes built during the turn of the century. It’s home to my favorite house museum in the world The Wren’s Nest (you know how much we love that place – our latest adventure there was my Out of Africa inspired wedding photo shoot). The West End is Atlanta’s oldest suburb (originally a white affluent ‘burb) and is now home to a number of African American cultural centers like Hammonds House and The Shrine of the Black Madonna.

The West End is not the neighborhood to go to if you want Starbucks and high-end shopping malls. It’s the opposite of big box stores, neatly manicured strip malls, and homogeneity. Instead it offers plenty of mom and pop shops, soul food restaurants, and a Krispy Kreme.

Before I leave for Scotland, I’ll try to give you a few more peeks of The West End. These photos were taken on a little side road dividing The West End of Oakland City, in front of a mural of Brer Rabbit and (a menacing/trickstery-looking) Brer Fox hopping along to The Wren’s Nest.

On Lar/moi: tank top from Khol’s • French Connection for Sears skirt • Target belt • Ashley Watson purse • Ring from Heliotrope • Turquoise necklace from June Shin • Orange beaded necklace from a clothing swap

Summer Layers

Oh goodness, what a week. While Lar has been keeping AsianCajuns afloat, I’ve been spending most of my waking hours in a car – or at least it’s felt like that. Troy and I had to drive up to Vandalia, OH unexpectedly last week for his grandmother’s funeral. It was an intense couple of days sandwiched between two nine hour drives. Almost as soon as we got back from Ohio, we jumped back in the car and headed to Dahlonega (about an hour north of Atlanta) for a short weekend getaway we’ve been planning for a month. The past six days have been a mix of emotions without any downtime and I’m exhausted.

My cure for exhaustion? Nope. Not sleep – sleep is overrated! If I really want to feel energized, I spend hours reading other fashion/design/lifestyle blogs. I get so inspired by the creativity of others. This summer I’ve noticed a lot of style bloggers have learned to work the layered look in the heat. So I tried it out myself.

Usually just the thought of wearing layers in the Atlanta heat would get me sweating, but I’ve learned to keep it minimal – like my yellow dress that’s pretty skimpy on the top and a crop top with loose short sleeves. I was outside for a good five minutes while Lar took these photos and I didn’t even begin to sweat. Success!

Outfit details: American Apparel dress, Dolce Vita top, Dolce Vita sandals, freebie faux Ray-Bans, second-hand necklace and AsianCajun necklace from MyNameNecklace.com.

And here’s a little bit more layering for you – in necklace form. Not the most unique idea, but I figured I’d point it out since the whole point of this post is about layers. Or is it about inspiration?

This Dolce Vita top is one of those purchases I made thinking I’d wear it a lot more than I do. I love the look of it – especially the handmade stamp vibe of the graphics on the back – but it’s kind of an awkward length. It’s not a full on crop top, but it’s short-waisted enough to look white-trashy with denim shorts.

I didn’t realize this outfit consisted of so much Dolce Vita until I started working on this post. I bought the sandals over a year ago and still love them so much. I imagine it’s the type of shoe Audrey Hepburn would wear if she was filming Roman Holiday in 2011.

I’m feeling better already. Here’s to a less stressful week!

Scarlett O’Hara and I Have A Lot in Common

On Lar/moi: cami from Rockit Boutique • mesh shirt thrifted • Zara skirt • old gladiator sandals from a trip to Florence • gifted Michele watch • BCBG OMG bracelet • curtain swag from Hancock Fabrics

Hi guys! It’s Friday! Yippee yeah! Lots of things to be excited about: Cath has been away all week – le sigh – but she’s coming back tonight! Plus we’re just about to jet to the airport to pick up my in-laws who are coming in from Sudan!

Before I go here’s a quick list of how Scar-Oh and I are alike:
1) We both live in Georgia
2) We both like flouncy dresses and big hats (who doesn’t)
3) We can both arch our right eye-brow pretty effectively.
4) We both wear window dressings on our persons. That ropey thing I have around my neck is actually something to sweep a heavy drape off to the side of a window. I bought it to wear with my (not-yet-purchased) all white summery ensembles – the kind that I usually am scared to wear because I know I’ll inadvertently sit in a pile of dirt 15 minutes after I put it on. So for now off-white and pink ensembles will have to do. Maybe one day I’ll graduate to wearing the whole curtain – white instead of green velvet.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend, lovelies!!!

Lar’s Four Eyes

I’m nearly legally blind without my goggles on. I much prefer my contacts, but during the spring and summer in Atlanta there is some allergen in the air that makes my eyes and contacts kung fu each other.

I know frames are trendy now, but no matter how popular they become, I won’t like glasses on me (love them on other people though). The pair I wear now are my favorite ever because they are almost non-existent. But they don’t fool me. I can still see you, you skinny feather-weight-ified frames that constantly slip down my nose and make going down stairs tricky (fuzzy peripheral vision sucks). I want to rip them of my face and stomp them into little shards – except my foot would probably miss the glasses because I wouldn’t be able to see the darn things. Damn you, lack of depth perception!

Anywhoddle, I usually take the things off before I take a photo: 1) because I’m vain (and don’t like the way they look on moi) and 2) there’s a glare issue. Both bad reason. So I figured I’d keep them on this go round.

(See how the photo below is fuzzy? I wish my eyes were that good without my glasses!)

These made up for the glasses today:

On Lar: DIY cut-up thrifted man’s shirt • Citizens of Humanity skirt • Madewell necklace • Silvia Tcherassi for Payless shoes

p.s. Thank you guys for all the sweet comments on the last post! It truly made me think, maybe I can do more of this. Xoxoxo, Lar

When I Grow Up, I Want To Be A Stylist!

I usually like being a graphic designer by day and a blogger by night, but sometimes I feel like I live my life by the unnatural glow of a computer screen. I’m sure a lot of you can relate!

The thing is, I miss creating things with my hands (drawings, paintings, props, etc.) and I’ve been yearning to break out of my computer rut for a few years now. I’ve been dreaming of being a stylist (you know like  Tim Walker or Annette Joseph). I need to start as a stylist’s lacky – schlepping around furniture and props – and learn how to create an enticing world, communicated in a few photographs.

This past weekend, my uber-talented wedding photographer Aharon Hill asked me to style an inspiration wedding shoot (faux couple, faux wedding). I didn’t want to do the usual rustic charm wedding (barn, chalkboards, bunting, ball jars) – very sweet, but I wanted to try something a bit different. I took my inspiration from one of my all time favorite movies:

We had no budget and only 12 days or so to coordinate an Out of Africa wedding. I started sketching ideas and pulling together props, and Aharon roped some great vendors into helping us. (Below: my props took up a good part of my dining room and the entire interior of my car).

Finding a couple to be our Karen and Dennis was a little tricky, as was making a wedding cake appear, and telling Georgia to look like Kenya (“Less kudzu, more lions in the grass!”), but here are the result (see more photos on Aharon’s blog):
