Lar’s Re-doing Her Kitchen (and losing her marbles)

It might seem like really bad timing on my part: 1) make plans to move abroad, 2) redo kitchen a month before leaving. Recipe for disaster – oh and I hate disastrous recipes. But we aren’t as crazy as we sound (or so I like to think). My hubs and I received a generous monetary gift from my in-laws for our wedding. Said in-laws have oh-so-wonderfully agreed to stay in our house (in our hood) while we are away. So we thought, why not make the kitchen more usable?! By usable we mean: installing a dishwasher and ripping out old uneven countertops and generally making the space less of a dark cave.

So we went marble shopping yesterday!

Look how excited I am by the marble slabs (above) and how steadfast and assured Matt is by this swirly granite (below):

Sadly, we learned that just days before our arrival to the Slab Farm (that’s what Atlanta Kitchen and Baths calls it), a worker had been moving all the lovely marble in our price range and broke it! Luckily said marble mover was not hurt (phew!), but we had to leave empty handed (sigh).

We needed some sort of consolation prize, and luckily the Slab Farm is just steps from one of my favorite bakeries in the whole wide world: Southern Sweets.

Wow! is right, piggy chef. Consolation prize: rustic cherry pie – ooooo I’d loose my marbles any day toΒ  eat this! Slice of heaven, this is!

Can’t resist, must show you another shot:

It’s a lovely space. I believe one of the bakers is an artist, there’s an artist studio tucked off to the left of the shop, and wonderfully colorful paintings covering the walls. And you can eat your slice of pie on a soft buttery leather sofa. Delightful!

Oh, right, ahem, back to the kitchen. Please do not judge this photo below. This is the state of our kitchen at the moment: cabinet doors off, souls bared. Eesh! Can you tell even the camera could barely stand to look – just a quick blurry glimpse.

The plans are to prime/paint/demolish and then have the countertops and backsplash installed so it looks a little something like this:

(This is just one of many inspiration photos I’ve gathered, and I’m sorry I don’t know where it’s from. If it’s yours, please let me know and I’ll drop a link in straight away).

So that’s my weekend(s) job! What you lovelies up to?

  1. Oooooh good luck crafting the pretty white kitchen of your dreams! Southern Sweets is A-mazing btw. My sister and I used to get their cheesecakes and keylime pies instead of birthday cakes πŸ˜‰

  2. Love southern sweets too! I always drop by after shopping at Dekalb farmer’s market. They have really good lunch sandwiches and a heavenly pecan pie!

Good luck with the kitchen renovations, looks daunting!

    1. Thanks, Twixy! Oh I need to start doing that combo: Farmer’s Market and a treat at Southern Sweets for getting through the market’s lines πŸ˜‰

  3. oooh marble, I mean mmmm, pie. πŸ™‚ I can’t wait to get a house of my own so I can start renovating it! Your inspiration picture looks lovely, fresh, and airy!

  4. Good luck with the kitchen remodel! So nice of your in-laws to hold down the fort while you’re away. Do you know exactly how long you’ll be abroad?

Oh, and the pics of Southern Sweets has me convinced that I must stop by the next time I make a farmer’s market run! Looks so cute!

    1. Hi Heather! Yes, isn’t it nice? Matt and I would have to find renters or try to sell our space if our in-laws weren’t so generous! We’ll be abroad anywhere from 1 to 3 years. Hopefully we’ll know a few months after we get to Scotland πŸ˜‰
Oh and you definitely need to go to Southern Sweets – though I warn you, it is very addicting!

  5. Ohhhhhhhh how I miss slipping away for a bit of dessert on that buttery leather couch! Your marbles look fabulous. can’t wait to see the finished product!

  6. Oooo. I really like that kind of country kitchen look. Marble top counters are so luxurious. And you’re a very very brave lady to do all that in a month. It’s snowing here and I’d love a warm pie right now a la Keri Russell in Waitress.

  7. it’s always so much fun re-doing one’s home! it sounds so exciting. can’t wait to see the progress. best of luck. hope you’re all having a wonderful summer

    xx

  8. 1. Exciting – love renovations!

    2. I will want to hear more about this marble place after you get the goods in – Dan and I are going to renovate our kitchen in the next few years and need all the good recs we can get.

    3. LOVE LOVE LOVE the classic white cabinets and simple/elegant backsplash.

    4. I have never been to Southern Sweets – how bad is that? πŸ™

  9. haha you’re crazy to do this all at once but who says crazy isn’t good? I remember I sold my place, bought another place and moved in 2 weeks before I got married. Life happens fast.

The cherry pie looks delish!!! Is there such a thing as a southern sweet specialty? just wondering as I’ve never been to that part of the USA and wondering what kind of baked goodies are a “southern” thing?

  10. Oh I wish you could try some peach pie, Liv! Red velvet cake is quintessentially Southern. Or Krispy Kreme Dougnuts. Anything with a lot of butter, fried, cooked, baked is very Southern it seems πŸ˜‰
