Ode to HELMUT (Lang)

I’ve been a huge fan of Helmut Lang for years now. I love the line’s deconstructed and simplified designs. Like most fancy, schmancy, gorgeous designer lines, Helmut Lang pieces are mostly for the 1%. And like most designer lines, Helmut Lang also has a more “affordable” line called HELMUT – for the 10%.

This gray top was my first HELMUT piece that I purchased at a secondhand shop a few years ago and this is my brand new HELMUT piece that I purchased with a Shopbop giftcard:

HELMUT Voltage Draped Ribbed Cardigan • Madewell silk tank • The Limited skirt • Shoes from Eviva Boutique • necklace was mom’s • watch is a birthday gift from friends

I’m not really sure why my face is so overexposed in the above photo. Could be something wonky with my iPhone camera. Or it could be my inner glow shinning through. Who knows?

I originally bought this cardigan to wear to in Scotland when I visit Lar (in 24 days!!!). However, it ended up being much more delicate than I realized – a little too flimsy for a Scottish “summer.” Good thing it’s perfect for this hot Georgia summer – at least perfect for the airconditioned office.

I’m usually not so devoted to labels, but this purchase warrants a close up of my wonky eyebrows the tag and light-as-a-feather material.

Hope you all are having a wonderful Thursday/pre-Friday!

_______

Dearest Lar,

I know your week has been even busier than mine, but I hope you’ve had a little bit of downtime.

I think I’ll just have to crack into my winter clothes when I pack for my trip to Scotland next month. I’m getting so used to the intense heat here (but still complain about it all the time), that I’ll be freezing in the 50 degree weather. I mean, I’m going to have to pack socks for goodness sakes! Apart from working out I haven’t worn a pair of socks in months!

Do you have anything fun planed for the weekend? I might go see Brave with Brie and Michelle and then I’m going to spend the rest of my time working on my stats paper and other homework. Exciting, right? My final is in two weeks – eep!

Love and miss you as always,

xoxo Cath

Visiting Rhodes Hall

As a late birthday present, Troy took me to Rhodes Hall because he knows how much I love house museums. Rhodes Hall was the retirement home of Amos Rhodes. That’s Rhodes as in Rhodes Furniture – still bringing affordable furniture to the masses!

Check out how my hair went all limp in the heat. I swear it looked a little bit better when I left the house for the day. A little. . .

Secondhand top • Urban Outfitter black denim shorts • Dolce Vita sandals • secondhand necklace and bracelet • Michael Stars sunglasses

Rhodes Hall was built in 1904, designed to look like a (small) German castle, and is now one of the only remaining mansions that once lined Peachtree Street in Atlanta. It’s sandwiched by skyscrapers and across the street from a Shell station, but you can’t tell in the photos below. You can almost image what the estate looked like at the turn of last century when it was 114 acres:

The Victorian era isn’t my favorite, but I still loved exploring Rhodes Hall. It’s always entertaining to see what the rich liked to spend their hoards of money on. For example, Mr. Rhodes had the windows by the main staircase painted with images of the confederate army almost forty years after the war ended.

My favorite room was the pink parlor with the elaborate chandelier. Well played, Mrs. Rhodes, well played.

Today Rhodes Hall is one part house museum, one part event space and one part headquarters of The Georgia Trust. If you live in Atlanta or are visiting the city and love house museums as much as me, head to 1516 Peachtree Street (across from the Shell station) and take a tour.

__________

Dearest Lar,

Touring house museums always reminds me of our family vacations. I think it wasn’t until I was 16 that I realized most families didn’t plan their vacations around historic homes.

Only 26 more days until I fly to Scotland to visit you! We’ll have to do some house/castle tours in addition to going to Spoon. I can’t wait!!!

xoxo, Cath

My Favorite Restaurant in Edinburgh

‘Tis not the fanciest restaurants nor Michelin starred, but Spoon is by far my favorite place to eat in Edinburgh. It’s not crazy expensive, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, the wait staff uber-friendly (but not in a cheesey, b.s.-y way). and the food! Delicious and nutritious (lots of veggie and gluten free options)!

Isn’t it sweet? It’s homey without being too “done” and sugary sweet looking. It’s what I want my home to feel like (and smell like). It also happens to have great views of Nicholson street because it’s up on the second floor (first floor in British) of a lovely old building.

Here’s what we ate:
(p.s. Cullen skink is a savory, aromatic smoked fish soup — kind of like clam chowder)

And this is why we went:

My husbando just found out that one of his papers will be published soon — and (sorry for the mushy cheese) I am so very proud of him!

When you guys come and visit, I’ll take you to Spoon — just let me know when 😉

Dear Kitcath,

As I said on skype, we are definitely going together! I AM SO EXCITED that you bought your tickets. So we have what 27 days until you are here!!!!!! EEEEE!!!! Hope you have a marvelous Monday!

TGIF Link Love

We added our names and would like to think talented illustrator, Sara Soderholm, was inspired by AsianCajuns when she painted this, but probably not. . . 😉

• A review of some of the best iPhone photo apps on Kris Atomic.

• In search of the perfect leather tote? Search no more!

• Don’t bring your old clothes to the thrift store, instead try one of these 13 options.

• Awesome illustrated animated gif.

• This DIY dip dye maxi skirt would look lovely with a chambray button up tied at the waist. Weekend project perhaps?

• Loose waves hair tutorial with a flat iron.

Hope you have a lovely weekend!

Happy July 5th!

I realize that most self-respecting bloggers plan ahead and have a 4th of July themed post the day of, but not this one! Instead I’m a day late and a dollar short, but at least Lar did an awesome post on the quirky culture of the very people we split from 236 years ago! Independence! I just wish skittling had caught on here and not in bowling form.

Madewell v-neck • H&M skirt • Havianas • Clare Vivier purse • necklace from Shopbop

I had a lovely low key July4: brunch at Sun in My Belly, made this quinoa salad, hung out with some friends and ate leftover ice cream birthday cake at my parent’s. Is it bad that I celebrated our country’s independence with ice cream cake, didn’t see any fireworks and was just really excited to sleep in on a weekday?!

How ’bout you guys? Were you more patriotic than me? Let’s hope so!

_____________

Dearest Lar,

Do you remember how much we used to love celebrating July 4th? It’s hard to believe that we were together at the beach just a year ago. It seems like you’ve been out of this country for longer than a year! Too bad we can’t take the train down to Brighton when I come to visit and have a beach weekend. How fun would that be?

Do you have a busy weekend planned? Let’s Skype this Sunday!

Sheep Heid Inn and Skittling!

Sometimes living in Scotland makes you feel like English is not your native language after all. “For goodness sakes,” you say, “what is a ‘heid’ and what is a ‘skittle’?!” Luckily it doesn’t really matter because you’ve already tried haggis and actually liked it, so you intrepidly move into the land of other new Scottishy words. It turns out that “heid” (rhymes with “need”) means “head” and “skittles” isn’t colorful candy bits, but old school bowling. Growing more Scottish by the minute, you are!

This weekend, Matt and I decided to embrace the Scottish and go play skittles at the oldest pub in Edinburgh, the Sheep Heid Inn, for my birthday.

Here’s how we got there:

(Errr. or maybe it was more of a take-two-buses-and-then-walk-15-minutes kind-of-a-situation, and then Matt posed in front of this Mini because I asked him to and it was my birthday so he did).

And this is what I wore (sensible as always) to crassly stand on the bowling lane:

Wannabe Balenciaga dress by Primark and shoes by Mango.

And here are all the dapper gents that came to my party:

Okay, maybe these skittlers weren’t at my party, but they were at a skittle party in 1913 at the Sheep Heid. Just 99 years too early, gents!

Isn’t it a lovely old place? Legend says that there was a pub in this very spot since 1360 and that Mary Queen of Scotts and her son James loved to stop here for a wee rest and skittle game on their way to Holyrood Palace from Craigmillar Castle (tough life, those royals). The name “Sheep Heid” came from the gift James gave to the inn keeper: the head of a sheep. yum? Poor sheepy.

Lovely spot, isn’t it? I highly recommend a visit if you’re in Edinburgh. Not only is the inn chock-a-block full of historical lore, but the wee village of Duddingston where Sheep Heid is located, is so charming. Nestled just at the foot of Arthur’s Seat and spitting distance to downtown Edinburgh, Duddingston still looks much as it would have in the 17th and 18th century when Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed the night, and later J.M.W. Turner and Sir Walter Scott.

Seriously, what could be a better way to spend an afternoon but skittling and rubbing shoulders with British ghosts?

Oh gracious! I just forgot today is the 4th (Matt and I are being uber British and forgot all about our independence). Hope all you American readers are having a lovely day of fireworks and hot dogs! xoxox

Dear Cath,

Oh I so wish you could have come skittling with us! We’ll have to take you to Sheep Heid if you fancy it. The atmosphere is lovely and I wouldn’t mind more of a toddle around Duddingston.

I cannot believe how hot it is in the ATL. I mean I should be able to remember what that is like, but I can’t! Today felt warmish — maybe in the 60s– and I actually wore a skirt (with tights)!

We will properly celebrate our bdays when you come into town. I know I sound like a broken record, but I cannot WAIT!!!

LOVE,

Lar

p.s. Our instructor today actually said the phrase “Easy, peasy, lemon squeezey” and I almost squealed in joy, but I reigned it in and looked calmed while saying “difficult, difficult, lemon difficult” in my head.

Staying Indoors

It’s been so hot here in Atlanta – and for most of the country – that I’ve been sticking to indoor activities only. See the outfit photos below? See how they were taken outside? Yep, I’m sweating buckets and I was only outside for a few minutes. It’s pretty amazing I didn’t have to photoshop out the sweat dripping off my nose!

Dress c/o Savannah Rae • Dolce Vita shoes • Claire Vivier bag Michael Stars sunglasses

Troy and I decided to take advantage of a Scoutmob deal and have a date night at Fernbank Museum’s Martinis and iMax. It was perfect for many reasons, but mostly because it was indoors. I also got a chance to wear my new Savannah Rae dress. I love maxi dresses, but they’re usually too long for me. This one was just a wee bit too long and I didn’t have the patience to get it altered so I just tied it in a knot – tada!

________

Dearest Lar,

I bet you can’t even imagine what 105 degrees feels like since you’ve been cold for almost a year! I wish I could bottle up some of this heat and send it to you.

Wasn’t it weird celebrating our birthday apart? I don’t think it will feel official until we celebrate it together in Scotland.

Hope you’re having a great week at school! Is that what you call it, school? That makes it sound much more elementary than it is. Classes? Set design course? Whichever. I can’t wait to hear more about it!

xoxo, Cath

More Oxfordness

I hope you had a lovely weekend, readers! Here’s a second recap of our trip last week to Oxford (so glad you liked the first post!). Again, I was only there for a wee 24 hour trip, and I spent roughly five of those in a pub with Matt and friends (one being a tipsy Oxfordian getting his doctorate in Classics — I highly recommend having a drink with one when you visit).

I’ll keep this short and sweet and let the photos (and my obnoxious arrowing) do the talking. Needless to say, Oxford is beautiful, lovely, and exceeded my already lofty expectations. The elusive British sun came out the second 12 hours I was there — just look at the Bodlien basking in its brilliance:

Matt and I have two friends, both are former Oxfordians, that showed us around. A good tip when visiting Oxford? Look up! There are stone faces and gargoyles and doodads (yes, doodads — my art history studies are paying off) clinging to the stone on every cornice, gable, and drain pipe:

The interiors are just as good:

What surprised me the most was that Oxford is even better in person than what you see in the movies. You know how you think “ahh, they’ve obviously just shot the pretty bits in every scene” whenever you see fancy places in films? Well, Oxford is made up of just pretty bits that comprise an entire town surrounded by fields and the Thames:

Isn’t it just annoyingly wonderful? It’s not as if I wasn’t jealous enough of people who get to study amongst massively impressive old libraries and eat in dining halls that are straight from Harry Potter (literally filmed in the Christ Church dining hall) — post-trip I’m a lovely deep shade of forest green.

p.s. Thank you all for your wonderfully encouraging comments about my career explorations — you guys made my week! xoxox

Dear Cath!

I hope you had a wonderful birthday yesterday! I can’t wait to celebrate with you properly in a MONTH!!!!

Isn’t Oxford wonderful? I loved Agnes Scott, but I would have left in a second if someone had given me a ticket to study here (a ticket to Oxford? That’s how it works right? ;)).

xoxoxoxoxox,

Lar

Happy Birthday, Cath!!!

Dear Kitcath

It doesn’t feel like a real birthday without you here (or me there), but I hope you have a most wonderful day! I will be thinking about you while I eat cake (Sara is making me something delicious and flourless — yippeee!) and play skittles. We can reenact the day properly when you are here in August.

Talk to you on skype soooooon!

LOVE,

Lar

An Instagram Interlude

While Lar is taking set design courses (so jealous), I’ve spent this month taking an accelerated statistics course for my masters program. Needless to say it’s not fun – but it is time consuming! So I’ve spent more time doing school work than taking outfit photos and blogging. My apologies, dear readers!

In place of an outfit post, I thought I’d do a short blurb about my Instagram photos. If you don’t follow me already, you can find me at AsianCajunsCath. No, Lar doesn’t have an account yet seeing as she uses an old brick-of-a-Nokia phone, but hopefully one day she’ll join the world of smart phone users!

1. Outfit of the day close-up: necklace from a clothing swap, Michael Stars t-shirt, Michele watch, J.Crew skirt (that hasn’t held up very well – Instagram evidence here)
2. These gorgeous sparkly tops are actually reflective bike vests made by Vespertine and found at Houndstooth Road in downtown Decatur.
3. Troy and I ended being pants twins the other day. His are from H&M and mine are Forever 21. I’m always worried that we’ll end up like those couples that dress the same. Thank goodness I didn’t wear my Chuck T’s that day! My heels are from Madewell via Shopbop, in case you were curious.
4. Bacon Cashew Caramel Corn at Colt & Gray – an amazing restaurant Troy and I found on our last night in Denver.

5. Still trying to drink green juice as often as I can. I try to make a double batch each time so I can have one jar later in the day or the next morning.
6. Still very happy with chevron stripes in my closet. I’m itching to do another chevron project like this watercolor.
7. Boo Radley, my parent’s dog, joined us on our picnic at Stone Mountain last month.
8. I don’t usually wear a lot of pink, but the other day I ended up wearing nothing but pink accessories: Unleashed espadrilles from Shopbop, my zebra scarf from a boutique in Edinburgh and an old J.Crew necklace.

________

Dearest Lar,

I always think it’s so funny that you work on computers all day and yet have no desire to get a smart phone! I fear these set design classes will just make you even more of a luddite – I mean, the studio doesn’t even have the wifis!

I miss you on Skype too! I demand that you write me a detailed email everyday 😉 As part of your course are you going to go see a play this week? Remember when we went to see Matthew Bourne’s Play Without Words at the Festival Theater? I loved that play. . . without words!

Is it nice to be back in a learning environment? As much as I bitch and moan about statistics and homework and tests, I’m still happy to be back in the classroom.

Let me know when you have time to chat this weekend. We definitely have to Skype on our birthday!

xoxo, Cath
