Spending Some Quality Time With My Shoes

While Lar is out and about in Edinburgh exploring castle ruins and city farmers markets, I’m at home. . . shining my shoes. . . on my deck. . . still wrapped with Christmas lights from last year (no point in taking them down now – Christmas is just around the corner!). I lead an exciting life.

While I’d much rather be visiting the Scottish countryside, I do get a lot of pleasure in taking care of my clothing. Somehow shining my shoes is cathartic; it feels go to do something that prolongs the life of an item when so many products these days aren’t made to last.

I’m no expert, so I’m not sure if I shine my shoes correctly, but it gets the job done. So, without further ado, here’s how I go about taking care of my shoes.

Tools: Horse hair shoe shine brush, can of Kiwi Regular Shoe Polish in black, applicator sponge, shine cloth and SureHold SureFlex adhesive. Everything except the adhesive (more on that later) is from a shoe shine kit that I’ve had for ages. All these items are available online or at your local drugstore.

First up, I brush off any excess dirt. If my heels are really caked in mud I’ll use a toothbrush with soap and water to clean them. When I asked Troy to take these photos the other day I was feeling way too lazy to use soap and water, so you only get a pic of me dry brushing:

Next, apply the polish. I dab my applicator sponge in the polish and then move along the shoe in circular motions, making sure to cover all of the scuff marks.

I love how the polish packaging is so still old-school. I rue the day Kiwi decides to make their tins out of plastic!

Last step: take a shine cloth and buff in the polish. If you want some extra shine, you can sprinkle on a little bit of water and buff a little bit more. Or you can go really crazy and add another layer of polish and buff again! I usually just stick with one application of polish and a little bit of water.

Now for some satisfying before and after shots:

Ah. So much better, no?

But we’re not done yet! I have two more shoe care tips I want to share.

Tip 1: Buy a tube of SureHold SureFlex adhesive. I hate, hate, hate that feeling when your inside sole detaches from the bottom interior of the shoe and starts bunching up right under your heel. Eventually all of my favorite pair of shoes suffer from this because I tend to over-wear shoes I love. So a few years ago I did some research – and by research I mean I Googled “best glue for inside of shoe” – and discovered this SureHold stuff. I was so concerned that any glue I used inside the shoe would make the sole too stiff and make it even more uncomfortable, but this stuff works like a charm. The inside sole becomes as good as new!

Tip Two: If you don’t want your boots to get slouchy and don’t feel like buying expensive boot shapers or making your own, just use a rolled up magazine. I’ve had these Frye boots for over two years and whenever I’m not wearing them I’ve used the same rolled up issues of Yoga Journal inside each boot. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy.

So there you have it! Now you’re all shoe shining experts!

Next post: polishing silver! I’m kidding. . . mostly.

Dearest Lar,

I bet you don’t have to shine your Hunter boots – those things are indestructible. If it rained more here, I would absolutely buy a pair. Now, on the issue of ethical clothing, I like the idea of purchasing vegan shoes and purses, but they never seem to last nearly as long as leather products. I wish there was a shoe shining equivalent for non-leather items.

I had so much fun at the Lady Foot Locker/Under Armour event last weekend – even though I’m completely out of shape. It would have been even more fun if you could have come with me. The icing on the cake was that every blogger at the event got a pair of Under Armour shoes – the ones I’m wearing in the top photo and below:

I’m hoping there will be some fun blogger events when you come into town for the holidays. I’m so tired of saying, “Hey, I’m Cath, one half of the AsianCajuns.”

What to Wear on the Weekend

Happy Monday! Let’s talk about the weekend.

This post should really be titled, “What the hell should I wear this weekend?” With my limited budget, I end up spending my money on work-appropriate items. If it wasn’t for Lar leaving me a bunch of her fun, laid-back clothing when she moved, I’d end up wearing my pencil skirts* and button-up shirts on the weekend.

I wore this outfit to brunch on Sunday. The sunglasses, belt and purse are Lar’s. The denim skirt is a hand-me-down from my aunt. I bought the top right before going to a Minnesota Twins game when I was freezing my butt off in Minneapolis last month (proof here). The boots are the only item that I sometimes wear to work.

Target fleece • H&M skirt and belt • Urban Outfitters bag • Frye boots • Michael Stars sunglasses

If I had an unlimited budget, I’d buy a couple of pairs JBrand jeans and these sweaters in different colors and wear them as a weekend uniform. It might sound boring, but really I just want some comfortable, good-looking clothes that work just as well for sitting around watching TV as they do for a Sunday brunch.

Since I don’t have an unlimited budget, my fall clothing wish-list includes nothing but work-friendly items: navy blue heels (I have my eye on these), button-up silk shirts and a perfect black blazer. If I buy any or all of those items, I’ll include them in some upcoming blog post.

*This might be a little bit of exaggeration. I do own a few pairs of jeans that I have on heavy rotation on the weekends.

___________

Dearest Lar,

I know you feel that you don’t have many interesting clothes, but your eye is so much better than mine. You always look great in your outfits even with just a few key pieces in your closet. You’ve actually inspired me to do more thrift store shopping this season – I think that’ll be the only way I get some items on my wish list.

I hate that we weren’t able to Skype this weekend. Who knew yard work was so time consuming?!? I thought it was only going to take me a few hours – not 7. Mom and I ended up working well past sunset. Maybe we can video Skype during my lunch break this week.

Miss you so, so much,

Cath

A Visit to Club Monaco

A few weeks ago the folks over at Club Monaco invited me to stop by the newly renovated store at Lenox Mall and check out the fall collection. A chance to play dress-up? Uh, yes please – I would enjoy that very much!

Everyone on the Club Monaco staff was so sweet: letting me in the backroom for a sneak preview of October line, bringing me larger different sizes when I needed it, and allowing me to play around with the store props (see trunk, croquet mallet and manikins in the photos below).

Ready for some epic goofiness?!

Here I am laughing it up with my new best friend:

I’m wearing the Carla Sweater Jacket (one of my favorites from the October line) with the Ella Silk Printed Shirt underneath (not shown), Justine Skirt and the gorgeous Schutz Eunice T-Strap Heels.

Next up, my House of Elliot inspired outfit. This cream-colored silk blouse was so elegant and 1920s-inspired that I almost slapped down my credit card right then and there. Instead I stuck my tongue out and grabbed a display trunk at the front of the store.

Kyle Silk Shirt with a white cami underneath and Charlotte Lace Pencil Skirt.

Here’s a better view of the bottom of the blouse and and skirt with the Natalie Two-Tone Cross Body bag.

Troy, who so graciously came along with me to take the photos, said “Pretend like you’re flirting with the manikin!” Why not? I’ll tell you why not. The store was still open and there were customers trying to shop in the men’s department, but Troy was determined. You can’t see my cheeks in the photo below, but let me assure you they were bright red! Right before Troy snapped this photo, a gentleman was trying to get around me to check out the jackets in the back. Didn’t he know an all important blogging photoshoot was going on? Nope. Probably thought I was just crazy.

Cassie Silk & Lace Top and Patricia Silk Pull-On Pant.

The best thing about these pants is the elastic waistband – hence the “Pull-On” part of the name. I love a good elastic waist band – perfect for the upcoming holidays when there’s lots of eating to be had.

Lauren Merkin Glitter Clutch, Erickson Beamon Ring and the Crystal Thread Bracelet (the black ring is my college ring – Go Scotties!).

Nothing like a little game of croquet in the middle of the store. . . with out a ball:

Isadore Fedora, Janice Tweed Scarf, Sarah Cardigan, and Tasha Leggings (and my own shoes). What’s with the serious face? I’m trying to look casual, folks. That’s my hey-I’m-just-hanging-out-with-a-croquet-mallet-in-Club-Monaco look.

And last, but definitely not least, the Sybil Dress – in a kind of creepy animated gif. I love the leather sleeves and exposed zipper. It’s perfect for work. In the winter I’d wear it with black tights, my new Target booties and fitted black blazer with leather sleeves (something I don’t own. . . yet).

The icing on the cake of the whole evening was being able to keep two pieces from the store. It was a tough decision, but I ultimately ended up deciding on the Ella blouse and Charlotte lace skirt. Keep an eye out for them in upcoming posts.

But wait! There’s a cherry on the icing of the cake! I know that makes no sense, but hear me out. The first five readers (not including Lar) who leave a comment on this post will get a 20% off Club Monaco coupon! Just leave a quick comment with your email address and I’ll pop one of the coupons in the mail to you asap.

Happy Club Monaco Shopping!

_______________

Dearest Lar,

I wish I could send you one of the coupons, but there aren’t any Club Monacos in Scotland. Boo hiss!

It was so wonderful getting to “see” you on Skype today! I’m so glad you have good internet connection at your new apartment and even if that fails, there’s always the pub downstairs. Hurrah for pubs with wifi!

Zebra Stripes

Nothing like starting the week off with some animal print! Actually the timing of these photos are a little bit of a farce – I took them a month ago. Atlanta hasn’t really cooled down yet, but if I had take these photos this week I would probably have a cardi jammed in my purse for the coolish mornings/evenings.

H&M dress and belt • Kate Spade purse • Jeffrey Campbell heels • Primark necklace

It’s a shame that Wheatie doesn’t have the same appreciation for black patent and zebra prints as I do – otherwise I’d give him a jazzier collar.

I bought the necklace at Primark when I was visiting Lar last month and am surprised I haven’t worn it much. Before buying it I had been on the hunt for a beaded collar necklace because I could think of a million outfits to wear with it. Of course now that I have one, I can’t quite figure out how to style it.

I love this jersey, zebra dress from H&M. It has an exposed zipper on the back, a cinched waist and a long-ish hemline that is higher in the front than the back.

Another reason why I love this dress:

Someday I’ll live in a house that’s worthy of that wallpaper (you can purchase it here). Until then I’ll just buy affordable dresses with patterns that remind me of it.

I hope you all had a great weekend and have something fun planned for the week. Lar might be MIA for a while since she and Matt just moved apartments and might not have internet for a while. I have to start studying for my microeconomics midterm, which means I’ll be taking lots of study breaks to blog.

I know Lar was so touched by all the sweet words from everyone about her endometriosis. I’m so proud of her for sharing her story and grateful to Diane for spearheading the fundraiser.

_______

Dearest Lar,

I’m so glad you’re done with your move to your new flat. I know you still have a lot of settling in to do, but you’ll make your new place look cozy and gorgeous. Don’t forget to take before photos!

If you make it over to a cafe with wifi this week, make sure to Skype me! xoxo

Urban Exploring

First off, thank you for all the sweet comments about the Endometriosis post Lar wrote earlier this week! Before Lar was diagnosed with Endometriosis (I’ve never been, but it’s not certain that I don’t have it), I never realized how little was known about the condition. I’m tempted to get on my feminist soapbox and point out that so little research has been done on women’s health in general, but I’ll save that for a more serious blog post. Until then, let’s discuss urban exploring!

I love cities. Always have. I don’t know what’s more exciting, unearthing a part of town/a shop/a restaurant in my home city or exploring a city I’ve never been to before. Lucky for me I got to do both this past month. Two weekends ago, two friends and I attended the Unseen Underground Walking Tour and I just got back from a five day business trip to Minneapolis.

Second-hand Marks and Spencer button-up shirt • H&M skirt • Longchamp bag • Office Britannia Reigns flatsMettle necklace

The Underground Tour was fascinating and Minneapolis was incredibly clean, more bike-friendly than Portland, and had plenty of James Beard Award-winning chef-driven restaurants to keep my belly content.

The photos in this post are from an evening Troy and I spent exploring the eastern side of Atlanta’s Old Fourth Ward neighborhood and eating ramen at our favorite restaurant, Miso Izakaya. Ammazza is the name to the future restaurant in these photos. Soon I’ll be able to eat wood fired pizza and tonkotsu ramen within the same evening – bliss!

I can’t believe I haven’t shown these shoes on AsianCajuns yet. If you follow me on Instagram, you might have spied them here. I bought them (their official name is Britannia Reigns in black suede) in Edinburgh last month. They’re one of the only pairs of flats I’ve tried on that immediately felt amazingly comfortable on my feet. Flats usually pinch in weird places on my feet, which is why I like to be practical and mostly wear heels 😉

Anywho, you’ll be seeing a lot of these guys on AsianCajuns this fall, because I’m tempted to wear them everyday.

The Marks and Spencer shirt was another find in Edinburgh at a local charity shop. I didn’t even try it on at the time. Not only does it fit perfectly – it’s wrinkle free! Forget silk – this blend is amazing. I threw the shirt in my suitcase that I packed for Minneapolis at the last minute and it looked perfectly crisp as soon as I hung it up on the hanger at the hotel.

Whoa! I just did a quick search for it and turns out this blouse still available on M&S’s site! It’s called the Autograph Color Block blouse. If it came in other colors I would buy them all.

__________

Dearest Lar,

First you go to island in Greece for two weeks that has no wifi and I end up at a hotel in Minneapolis with internet speeds so slow I can’t Skype you. It’s been rough! Plus, you’ll be moving this weekend and we’ll have to wait an eternity again before you get internet. Ah! What am I’m going to do? Perhaps we can set a quick Skype date during my lunch hour this Friday?

Miss you terribly!

Love, Cath

Return to Falko (in Edinburgh)

Ever since Lar wrote about Falko Konditormeister last November, I couldn’t wait to try it out. I was heart-broken when I was in Edinburgh last December and learned that Falko was closed the whole week I was in town for the holidays. Not to worry! When I returned to Edinburgh in August, Falko was open and in full swing.

Michael Stars sunglasses • Lar’s American Eagle shirt • H&M jacket that I left for Lar because she liked it so much • Claire Vivier toteJ.Crew jeans • Dune ballet wedges that Lar gave to me since I liked them so much

I’m so jealous that Matt and Lar live within a one minute walk of this place. It’s the type of place where you could spend all day reading newspapers, sipping your coffee, and munching on buttery pastries while people watching.

I ordered this raspberry tart that tasted like a giant linzer cookie and it was as delicious as it looks. My mouth is watering now just thinking about it.

Does this post make you want to start your Monday with a trip to your local bakery/pastry/doughnut shop? I live within walking distance of this place and I’m VERY tempted.

P.S.: Atlantans, make sure to check back tomorrow for a giveaway contest we’re having. It might or might not have something to do with this.

___________

Dearest Lar,

I’m so excited that you’re finally back from Greece! You must be exhausted – and beautifully tan. I know you’re probably slammed with work today, but I can’t wait to see all the gorgeous photos you’re going to post on here.

What was the first thing you did when you got home? Wrap yourself up in a blanket? Since I’m sure Edinburgh is at least 20 degrees colder than Greece. Take a shower? Since you had to shower with zero water pressure for the last week and a half. Jump into bed? Since you got in so late.

Maybe we’ll get a chance to Skype today. Oh, I hope so!

Love, Cath

(Finally) An Outfit Post!

Ramona West dress worn as a top • second-hand necklace • Forever 21 pants • Seychelles shoes

I know it’s been forever since we’ve had a good ol’ fashion outfit post on here. There’s a couple reasons for that:

1.) Lar and I have been posting photos nonstop of our time together in Scotland where we didn’t really care too much about what we were wearing and were more focused on just being together! In the same country!
2.) We’re both feeling like we’re going through personal style changes – becoming less focused on fashion trends (more on that in a future post). There are only so many times you can walk into a H&M or Zara and feel inspired, especially when you realize shopping at those places makes you look like everyone else.
3.) It’s hard to get motivated to take outfit photos when you’re tired of your old clothes and don’t have the money to buy new items. I’m going to be doing a lot of thrift store shopping for any fall and winter clothes I need.

I actually took these photos before my trip to Scotland and only realized this week that I never posted them. The dress is one of the many clothing items Lar left me when she moved away last year. It works so well tucked in as a shirt because it’s so long I never have to worry about re-tucking it even though the pants sit low on my hips.

I’d like to say that I cuff all of my pants because I love the look, but it’s mostly because I’m too lazy to get my pants hemmed or hem them myself. And given the fact that I’m short, ALL of my pants need to be hemmed when I buy them. So let’s just pretend I’m right on trend and cuffing really isn’t the lazy girl’s solution to hemming!

Speaking of trends, I went to the grand opening of the C Wonder store in Atlanta a few weeks ago and man, does that store have it figured out! As soon as I walked in I thought, “Holy, moly! I want everything!” It was all so bright and cheery and filled with every item that captures today’s fashion zeitgeist: tassel loafers, silk shirts, arm party bracelets, monogram charms, envelop clutches. . . The list goes on and on:

I know, I know. This post is turning into a bi-polar mess. First I say that I’m no longer interested in trends and then I say how much I loved the C Wonder store because it’s so trendy. Well folks, I blame it on our consumer culture and my weakness for silk button-ups. At least I actually didn’t buy anything – just oggled at all the shop’s goodies.

Speaking of goodies, June Shin, local talented jeweler, is hosting a contest over on her blog for her new jewelry collection. Help her come up with a great name for her new collection and you could win one of the pieces! I’m trying desperately to think of something creative because I have my eye on this Ruby Chains beaut below:

For more info on the contest, visit June’s blog.

________

Dearest Lar,

It was such a treat to be able to text you today. For some reason I just figured even the cafes on Hydra didn’t have wi-fi. I still can’t believe that you went hiking and had to pee in nature – the horror! And you had to shower with water bottles? It’s beginning to sound more like a camping trip than a luxurious beach vacation. But, as long as you’re having fun and getting some good relaxation time, then it’s all worth it. I seriously can’t wait to see photos of all the donkeys you say like to mosey about town.

Sorry this post is all over the place! I still want to write about you taking me to Falko and eating yummy German pastries, but that will have to wait until next week – when you’re back in Scotland with wi-fi 24/7. Yay!

xoxo, Cath

A Night on the Town in Edinburgh

I have so many great memories from visiting Lar last month that I hope you all don’t mind me posting a bit more about my visit. For those of you who are sick of Scotland photos, don’t worry! I’ll be posting some outfit pics soon. And I’m sure Lar will be posting some amazing Greece photos when she gets back next week.

Here’s Lar waiting for the bus after we went to see Tatyana, a modern dance created for and performed by the Deborah Colker Dance Company. It was part of the Edinburgh International Festival and such a treat to see!

Express faux-leather jacket • thrifted skirt • Frye boots

Tatyana is a dance interpretation of Pushkin’s novel Eugene Onegin. Sounds very high-brow, doesn’t it? Well, it was. I’ve never read one sentence written by Pushkin in my life. Plus, it took me a whole act to realize that there was more than one dancer representing the character Tatyana and more than one dancer representing Onegin on stage. Here’s a helpful tip to any performance-goer: read the program before the performance begins. Durh!

The good news is that even philistines like me would thoroughly enjoy Tatyana. Being a former dancer, my legs always twitch when I see a great dance performance – and my legs twitched at least five times during Tatyana. Weird. I know. Lar and I went with two other friends that weren’t dancers and they loved it just as much as we did.

Edinburgh has so many great theater/performance venues. Tatyana was showing at the Edinburgh Playhouse:

I loved the rental opera glasses in between each seat. I wish every opera house was required to have these – mostly because I can only ever afford the nose-bleed seats and always, always, always hate not being able to see the dancers close up.

I felt so cultured leaving the Edinburgh Playhouse that night. Puskin, dance, Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky all rolled into one night! It made me think that I should stop spending money on clothes and save up to see great performances like this one.

_________________

Dearest Lar,

Do you have leg twitches too? I always figured that you did since you’re my twin and all. There have been so many times when I’ve had my leg crossed while watching a dance performance and my top leg involuntarily kicks out a bit – like someone has tapped the front of my knee. Surely that happens to you too.

I’m not sure if you’ll get a chance to read this post before you fly off to Greece. I still can’t believe you’ll be disconnected for ten days. That’s ten days without Skyping you! What am I going to do? I’ll just have to write everything down that I want to tell you so I can fill you in once you return – although you’ll have much more to tell me than I will!

I cannot wait to hear all about your adventures in Greece. I know I don’t have to remind you, but take lots of pictures!

xoxo, Cath

Book Festival Fever

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival was fantastic and the Edinburgh International Festival was lovely, but I was the most excited to go to the Edinburgh Book Festival when I was across the pond visiting Lar. Why? Because I always love the Decatur Book Festival, which is next weekend (yippy!), and Edinburgh is my favorite city, so how could the Edinburgh Book Festival not be amazing?!

I was not disappointed! The festival hosts 800 authors and writers for two weeks in Edinburgh’s New Town and it’s glorious. There are multiple tented author venues, two giant book store tents – one just for kids, a courtyard with literary deck chairs, and a cafe at every venue.

Lar and I were like kids in a candy store. We spent some time walking around, checking out the festival – including walking on the giant wordle platform in the courtyard.

We both walked away with four books each – some of them were free thanks to The Guardian book swap. I can’t remember all the books that Lar got, but here’s my list:

1.) I had to buy an Alexandar McCall Smith book being in Edinburgh and all, so I got this one.
2.) Lar encouraged me to purchase this novel and I’m so glad she did. I read it in 5 hours during my flight back home and already want to reread it.
3.) Got this book for free at the book swap. I’m still reading it and plan on leaving it at a local cafe when I’m done.
4.) I had to get this cute picture book for Troy.

There’s something about holding a stack of new books that makes me feel so rich – more so than clothes and home goods combined.

Lar and I were too cheap to go see any of the authors at £10 a pop, but felt we got our literary fill and spent the rest of the day lugging around our books in our Edinburgh Book Festival tote bags. *sigh* It was wonderful!

_________

Dearest Lar,

I’m so happy we got to experience the Edinburgh Book Festival together and really, really wish you could come Atlanta next weekend for the Decatur Book Festival. You’re going to miss funnel cake!

Have you read all of your books yet? Did you ever go back to the book swap and leave one of your books? I really enjoyed This is Life and want to read more by Dan Rhodes.

So glad we got to Skype today – it always puts me in the best mood 🙂

xoxo, Cath

Cath at the Bollywood Box

When Cath was here in Edinburgh, I had to take her to my favorite neighborhood haunts. The most important stop being The Bollywood Coffee Box.

When I first wrote about this place back in February I described it as an undiscovered gem. And gem it still is, but undiscovered it is not. The evening Cath and I stopped by, there was a hefty crowd of devotees lining up for a taste of owner Nutan’s famous chai and curries.

Cath and I agreed that the reason this place is so fantastic is that you aren’t just nourished by Nutan’s cooking, but by her wonderful warm and generous spirit too. Do you remember that Holi party, that she threw for all of Edinburgh?

And now The Bollywood Box is more than a place to eat delicious food, it’s become a mini-cultural institution and art installation. Nutan made one of the exterior walls of the box a gallery to share the work of local artists. Nutan herself is an artist (she has a masters in sculpture from Edinburgh College of Art), and the exterior of the box has been painted by her:

And even if you don’t stop by for a chat with Nutan herself, a passerby can have a chuckle at her pun of the day or feel inspired by the quotes she posts and changes weekly:

Art, culture, laughter, delicious food, and generosity of spirit all in a teeny blue box! I’m convinced that every city needs a Bollywood Coffee Box equivalent, don’t you agree? Do you guys have similar gems in your ‘hoods? Cath and I would love to hear about them!

—–

Dear Cath,

I think Decatur would be a perfect place to have a Bollywood Coffee Box, don’t you? Too bad we don’t have any abandoned police boxes stateside. I guess it’s equivalent to a stationary food truck, huh?

I’m so glad you got to meet Nutan when you were here! Argh, I still can’t believe your visit is already over though.
