Best Dressed: Ramona West

I’ve been a regular stalker shopper at Ramona West for about a year now. Cath and I have always been big thrifters, but usually in person at places like Good Will and Salvation Army. Online vintage shopping usually makes my palms sweat: will that just look like a costume on me? will it smell extra funky? is the material super-itchy? is that a muumuu and can I pull it off*?

But the minute Daily Candy introduced me to Ramona, my palms stopped sweating and I felt instantly at ease. These vintage pieces are carefully edited and tweaked to look a bit more modern, and the simple joy at knowing that not everyone and his sister will be wearing the same thing as me makes it my go-to site (buh-bye, Urban).

So here are a few pieces that I have from Ramona (probs about half of my “RW collection”):

1) 1970s mini (tights are from high school and boots are old AE).

2) Polka-dot mini (belt from Madewell, boots are 5-year old Target buys).

3) *This piece I call The Muumuu, but I say that with true affection. I saw this on the site and fell in love. I’ve always had a thing for poppies (it started with my early obsession with the Wizard of Oz), and these are hand-painted and gorgeous. I know this is the kind of piece that makes my less-fashionably interested friends question my sartorial sanity. I completely understand. I really do. It makes me love this muumuu more. (Tassel earrings are from the Etsy shop IHeartNorwegianWood).

I can certainly understand why vintage isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I love how unique and gorgeous it can be. Is it harder to wear than jeans and a t-shirt? Definitely. But the effort is worth it, even if people look at you with raised eyebrows, as they adjust their fleece Northface jackets and shuffle past you in their Uggs.

Atlanta/Decatur Tastes Real Good

One of the many, many great things about our Southern home is, not surprisingly, the food. Gawd, is it good! I know other cities have delicious food too, but one thing that makes Atlanta/Decatur greater is the price points. Up in D.C. I could never really afford to eat the really good stuff. Down here, high Zagat ratings or mentions of James Beard Awards don’t make my hands shake when I hand over my credit card at the end of a meal.

To break up a busy Saturday, my bf and I decided to finally try JCT Kitchen (in West Midtown) for lunch. So delicious – and we came in at about $30 for both our lunches (including a coffee and dessert). I can certainly swing that once a week (when I go light on the thrift shopping).

Potato dumplings:

Shrimp and grits (with a poached egg on top)

The most delicious coffee I’ve had in a long while:

Georgia fried apple pie with vanilla ice cream and pitcher (not shown) of butterscotch sauce:

Outfit details: thrifted camel coat, hat from Tarjay, boots from America Eagle (years ago), sweater from Old Navy, scarf (as belt) from H&M, nude jersey dress from Lila Boutique in Inman Park, vegan-friendly purse from Vivid Boutique in Decatur.

Animales and Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Hello Dearest Readers!

Lar and her bf invited me and my bf over for Sunday dinner: roasted chicken, black eyed peas, collards and mashed sweet potatoes. And like all great Sunday dinners, this one ended in us wearing animal masks. That’s Lar in the tiger mask and me as a Zebra (just in case you couldn’t tell).

Wheatie wore his best GoldenDoodle mask:

I have no idea why Lar is laughing at me here. I mean, my zebra mask goes perfectly with my outfit: gray motorcycle sweatshirt from Walmart, H&M black turtleneck, Blank jeans and suede boots from Newport News years ago.

Lar is wearing her bf’s H&M shirt, thrifted belt, Blank cords and boots from Tarjay.

Our parents are hosting a Thanksgiving dinner for 23, so we’ll be swamped this week with table settings, menu planning, Thanksgiving decorating, turkey and Peking duck preparing, and lots of last minute food shopping.

If we don’t get a chance to blog before Thursday, we hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Sweet Auburn Curb Market

Sweet Auburn Curb Market is marvelous; right in the heart of downtown Atlanta and easily accessible by public transport. It doesn’t have the touristy gentrification of a place like Pike Place Market in Seattle, but in many ways, it’s better for it. People come here to actually buy produce, just-baked sweet potato pies for tonight’s dessert, and whole pigs for . cochon de laits? Oh and they also come here for delicious coffee and some of the best burgers in the city.

My bf and I stopped by Grindhouse (inside the market) for lunch. Two customized burgers, one hand-spun chocolate milkshake, and a basket of fries later, we rolled off our diner stools to start shopping: a huge batch of collared greens, sweet potatoes, 2 lbs of bacon, and freshly ground coffee.

The Sweet Auburn Curb Market’s neighbor is Grady Hospital. It made me feel better that the doctor sitting next to us was eating a large burger with no veggies and a great deal of onion rings. She was probably not a cardiologist, but if we clogged our arteries while chomping away at our lunch, we were just an elbow’s width away from medical service. Win, win!

In addition to burger grease, this is what I wore yesterday:

Hat is the bf’s, sweater is from my highschool years when I shopped at Wetseal, frilly tank thing is from Forever21, pink skirt is from Asos.com, boots are Target, purse is thrifted Coach.

I tried to meet up with Cath at the market to take outfit photos together, but we just missed each other. We’ll be eating lunch together today though- woohoo! She and her bf are due here in about an hour so I have to go get lunch ready: collards, mashed sweet potatoes, black-eyed peas and chicken. A solid Southern precursor to Thanksgiving- yummy!!!

Hope you all are having a wonderfully delicious weekend too!

AsianCajun Cuisine: There Really Is Such A Thing!

We’ve had a stir-fry and a bowl of gumbo in the same sitting, but I’m not sure if that counts as AsianCajun cuisine. I didn’t actually mix the bok choy with the roux. The two cultures have remained segregated: a bowl of stir-fry, chased by some gumbo. Such a shame. Luckily we have Serpas; a relatively new restaurant in the Old 4th Ward in the ATL that blends both cultures in one dish. Chef Scott Serpas channels his Louisiana roots and adds a dash of far east spice to create AsianCajun cuisine. We likey. Alot-y.

(ps- above: I’m trying out a new blogger pose. It’s called “grimace-at-poison-ivy-on-wrist.” Kate Moss invented it).

Doesn’t Cath look gorgeous? It must be the post-beignet consumption glow. I would have had it too had I not insulted them and said they were so cold. Isn’t her dress wonderful? I completely forget where she got it. We’ll have to ask her.

My absolute favorite dish we tried at Serpas was this shrimp salad with perfectly ripe avocado and butter-leaf lettuce. nom nom nommmmmmm. To be completely frank, the beignets that were served before the salad were a bit of a let-down. They were served cold (le sigh) and seemed indifferent to their deep-friedness. Parish still has the best beignets in town. (Locals, let me know if I’m wrong. I’m always up for a taste test).

That’s Cath sipping her mimosa. This was a fashion brunch: models walked around in teeny clothes while we shoved powder-sugared beignets in our mouths, and all the proceeds went to Komen for the Cure! Pretty much a perfect morning if you ask me.

Lar: blue dress by Rodarte for Targarte, belt by J.Crew, ring from my lovely friend E via Urban Renewal, boots by Frye.

Cath: errr. Cath, I have no idea. Where you get yur stuffs?

The Blue Sapphire in the Rusty Crown

Cath and I voted together last week. I still get excited about voting, even if I know the outcome might not be exactly as I hoped. There is something really satisfying in performing your civic duty, isn’t there? Or maybe I just really like the peach sticker we get in Georgia once you turn your ballot card in to the voter station volunteers.

Once we left the voter station (local church basement), Cath and I thought we should capture our post-voting glow in the parking lot. I have no idea why I’m pointing to my belly button here. I think it was part of my “where should I put my peach sticker” discussion with Cath.

Going to vote in the middle of the workday means that Cath and I are both attired for work. She wouldn’t be allowed to wear shorts like moi to the office (even if their salaciousness is mitigated with black tights and an oversized cable-knit sweater). But I love how she always looks so chic and not too conservative.

Ooo this is my new love (above). My mom thrifted this Coach bag a few months back ($30!), but found it was too small for her. I love how structured it is without being stuffy.

(Below) Cath is the queen of the messy bun! I so need to learn how to do that with her panache.

Hope you guys had a wonderful weekend!

On Lar: jacket from Express, shorts are from Old Navy, hat is H&M, shoes are Tarjay, sweater is from TJ Max, purse is thrifted Coach.
On Cath: necklace from Rockit Boutique in Decatur, shirt from Zara, shoes, pants and blazer from H&M

An AsianCajun Halloween

So this year I’m being a little lame and not dressing up or attending a number of wonderfully spooky social events, but Cath and my mom are totally making up for my lack of ghoulish merry-making.

My mom, creative genius that she is, decorated the dining room table this year with a darker theme than last year’s. She festooned this year’s table with bottles of (fake) blood, black netting, shimmery skulls, Spanish moss and black roses.

Cath is going as the black swan from the new Natalie Portman movie. This is kind of fitting for her/us because we spent years in the bizarre and unrelenting ballet world. Plus she already had the black pointe shoes.

You’ll see Cath’s costume within the next few days. In the meantime, here is what Cath and I wear when hanging out with googly-eyed pumpkins and stuffed crows:

On Cath: ombre shirt from Brazil, skirt from Ann Taylor, boots are Frye, bag is gifted from Saddleback.
On Lar: lace top from Zara, acid wash red skinnies from AA, oxfords are Capezio, and earrings are from I Heart Norwegian Wood.

I loooove these earrings. Cath got them for me in July for my birthday. We are both huge fans of Etsy seller Angie for her I Heart Norwegian Wood line. I have one of her corsets, but she is best known in the fashionista blogisphere for her harnesses. These tassel earrings are as light as a (crow)feather and add a little la-di-da to any outfit.

Tell us about your Halloween plans, readers! We love to hear ’em (and see pics if you are so willing ;). Eat some candy corn for me!

Zara and Saint James

Saint James and Zara. My baby name selections.

Hah! Totally kidding. Thinking about baby names totally freaks me out, and it really should if I even mostly-jokingly said St. James would be a decent name for a boy. Saint James made my shirt and Zara made Cath’s.

In the photo above I’m not actually crying as Cath looks on gleefully. I have fall allergies that cause my eyes to sting and burn right when I walk out of doors. Cath is trying to be all professional and hold a pose, but I couldn’t pry my eyes open for long (quasi-successful in the first shot).

Details:

I love the pleats and mini pom-poms on this gorgeous blue Zara tunic. It makes sense seeing as I bought it. I gave it to Cath when I realized she actually irons things (like this tunic) and I never would. I realized last night that half of the things in my closet were unwearable because I haven’t touched an iron in a year. So either I stop being woefully lazy or I hand over half of my closet to Cath.

Oh! Saint James! I know there’s been a lot of hullaballoo about these shirts of late. Madewell carries them online here, but I got mine discounted through the Refinery 29 store. These are the original nautical sailor shirts from Breton. Soft and slouchy and wonderfully woven – it’s my new favorite tee. Now everything else in the Saint James catalog is taunting moi . Et toi?

AsianCajun outfit details
Lar: hat form H&M, tee from Saint James, shorts from Old Navy (years old), boots from Target (also years old), purse from Moxsie.
Cath: tunic from Zara, pants from Ann Taylor, booties from Dolce Vita, purse from Vivid Boutique in Decatur.

Faux Fall Fur (and the real thing)

I’ve always felt a little hypocritical when I emphasize my animal-friendly purchases: faux fur, vegan-friendly (i.e. pleather) purses, etc. At least fifty percent of my footwear is leather and I eat plenty of meat and do not always buy the cage-free eggs. And the bacon that costs four times more because the piggies have been cuddled, loved and provided decent sties always gets pushed aside for the 2 for $5! cheapo crap.

I’m terribly conflicted. (Guilty glances abound) I like the way real fur feels when you pet it, I like the smell of leather and I looooove bacon. Does one faux fur item cancel out all the other carnivorous sins?

This fall faux fur jacket (fallfauxfur fallfauxfur fallfauxfur) is from one of our favorite local boutiques, Squash Blossom (Jinah works there!). The gingham shirt is thrifted from another terrific local shop called Poor Little Rich Girl (in College Park). The belt is J.Crew, jeans are from Rockit, boots are thrifted from Rag-o-Rama.

Okay, okay. I’m trying one more thing to assuage my guilt. Another photo of Boo Radley (with Troy and Cath) – the best real fur out there.

Transitional Weather

When it’s 40ºF in the morning and 80ºF by midday, how do you dress yourself? Layers, layers, layers . . . yeah I’ve heard that one before. But quite honestly, I find layering hard. A sweater or blazer over a tee, sure, got it. But to compensate for this much weather variation I’d have to pull a J.Crew layering magic trick (gorgeous, but only suitable for teeny tiny tall models – I find I look hobo-ish at 5’3 in tweed and sequins and fake flowers).

So what do the AsianCajuns do? Well my legs are really cold and goose-bumpy all morning and Catherine’s toesies freeze, but don’t we look . . . transitional? Say “transitional” slowly in a deep voice and it totally sounds like a sexy compliment.

You’ll see Boo Radley in a lot of our photos come winter. He makes a delightfully warm accessory. Real fur? Don’t need it. Live fur is the new fake monkey fur. Really. You heard it here first.

Speaking of cold legs and toes, another tremendously good (and not so original) remedy is a pair of boots. I have more boots than all the other types of shoes in my closet combined. Needless to say, I love boots. I would spend every day in a pair of boots if I could (damn you, Atlanta summers!). These beauties by Frye are the big purchase of the year(s) for me. I plan to wear them forever. or at least until Boo lets me wear him on my feet.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Cath and I are actually full of blogtastic going-ons: a social media panel at our alma mater, a fashion brunch at Serpas (yum and yum), and a photoshoot with this inspiring local blogger. What’s on your Sat/Sun list?
