Jaleo

Right before we left for NOLA I received this beautiful corset from Norwegian Wood. I’ve never had something made to order for me before, and the sheer delight of how perfectly-tailored silk feels on your skin is magnificent.

I’m almost too scared to wear this corset out and about because I know I’ll ruin it somehow, so I took it nice and slow this weekend by playing dress-up in my bedroom.

Paired with my flouncy skirt from a boutique in Birmingham, the corset reminds me of John Singer Sargent’s painting El Jaleo. I know this is nothing like traditional flamenco dress, but if I started flamenco dancing again, this is what I would wear.

I think it makes me want to dance because it feels so damn good to wear! Do you guys have clothes that do that? It makes me want to chuck every ill-fitting, cheapie F21 dress I have out of closet and save up for real clothes (something I probably should be doing at my age anyways).

Thank you, Angie! I love, love, love it!!!

Fashionistas, I’ll do a follow-up post with a detailed shot of the corset and more practical ways of wearing a piece like this year round (and out in public sans dancing πŸ˜‰ ). In the meantime, check out Angie’s other gorgeous handiwork at her Etsy shop Norwegian Wood.

  1. Ughhh, I’m so jealous! I ordered a corset top from Topshop only to realize that everything that they have is TOO BIG. πŸ™
Maybe I will have to get one made to fit, too. It really looks super super super fab on you!

  2. You’re just too CUTE for words!
    Love the twirl!
Yes, skirts gives that feeling for me and I even pretend like a salsa dancer when I do wear these kind of clothing pieces.

  3. It is adorable on you! I would never even think about parting with all my cheapo stuff though. my designer pieces coexist with F21 dresses in my closet as one big, happy family! Now I need to go check out Norwegian Wood. πŸ™‚

  4. You look too beautiful in the first pic! I feel the same sometimes about quality clothing, but honestly, if you are going to pay alot for something you have to be damn sure you will want to wear it forever and ever and ever.no?

  5. Lar, it is truly AMAZING. Gorgeous colors, great fit (obvs), and such a unique design. Can’t wait to see your tutorial on making it work year-round.

  6. Man, I have that feeling about throwing out all the cheaply-made clothes, all the time. But a proper wardrobe is such an investment! Anyways, your new corset is divine! I can’t wait to see all the ways you style it up!

  7. Well, it’s beautiful, and I hope you’ll throw caution to the wind and wear it anyway, because the world needs to see you looking beautiful IN it. Please don’t deprive us!

(Besides, you can always order another one if you spill peach sangria down the front of it, right?)

  8. I have that feeling, too – I experience it when I wear a F21 garment in a vibrant color I love but cringe all day at how short or low-cut the thing is (I know a cami and some leggings would help, but sometimes I don’t want to put all of that work in, especially when it’s hot outside!). I should save up and invest in clothes that meet every one of my standards of quality, beauty, and coverage, but fast fashion has a siren call.

I like how clothing brings out themes for you ladies, whether it’s classic NOLA themes, retro models, or flamenco dancers. That’s how dressing up should be, bringing out different characters. Fun!

  9. simply beautiful. also, if you ever DO decide to do a closet-cullwell, not that any of your clothes would even fit me, but i’d love to be on your let-know list! πŸ™‚

  10. awesome corset, i looove norwegian wood (both the song and the etsy designer) :]
i mentioned your forever 21 shoe dupe of the chloe sevigny for opening ceremony buckle boots on my latest post.
    check it out ;]

  11. Made to measure is certainly the way to go. Nothing like a well-tailored suit or pair of shoes.

ps. yep, back in the bamboo forest, eating pastries, and what not.

pps. those columns are super funny-I’m sure people get them confused with the Caryatids all the time.

  12. it’s absolutely gorgeous!! and i totally know what you mean about stop buying cheap ill-fitting clothing and saving for quality pieces.

  13. Had this been simply described to me I would have thought, no, that cannot work. Now I see how wrong I often am. There may be a few grammar problems there, but I think you can glean my meaning.

  14. Getting something tailored/bespoke is so grown up! I love the pattern and colours too. It’s something you’ll always treasure I’m sure.

  15. I love these photos! And oh my, that first photo.um, is your stomach made of steel???
I love when a piece makes one feel that good. You’re such a cutie!
    xx
