Scottish Sheep

Post Update:

Thanks to Lisa and Betsy for pointing out that my lovely sheep sweater is a remake of one Princess Di wore. It makes me love it that much more!

__________________________

One of my favorite purchases from my trip to Scotland. It’s not really my style (i.e. cutesy, not black, patterned, and not appropriate for work), but I fell in love with it when I saw it at a little shop in Edinburgh. Every time I wear it I think of Scotland and the cold, blustery day Lar and I went shopping. I can’t remember the name of the shop where I bought the sweater, but I remember the guy working behind the counter was super sweet. . . and dressed exactly like Captain Jack Sparrow – I kid you not!

I feel it’s unfair to name a post “Scottish Sheep,” without including a photo of the incredibly cute Blackface Highland:

photo

Gah! Look at their wittle faces! And there’s millions of them in the highlands – easily outnumbering the human population in Scotland.  See why I love Scotland so much? And why Lar moved there against my wishes? And why I can’t blame her for it?

Outfit details: sweater from a shop in Edinburgh, H&M black turtleneck, Blank cords, and H&M boots.

I’ve got to be honest that the two times I’ve worn this sweater out in public in the states I’ve gotten some stares. Apparently a 28 year old wearing an over-sized sweater with a sheep pattern isn’t typical. It felt so normal when I bought it in Scotland (they’re more into patterns there). Maybe I’ll try wearing it with this black mini to make it more grown up, less cutesy. Then again, maybe I should just embrace the cute factor. I mean, I did use baby talk in this post – eesh!

________

Dearest Lar,

What was the name of that shop? I can’t believe I can’t remember it. All I can remember is that it had a name that made it sound teeny-boper-like. Have you been back since we went last month? Is Captain Jack Sparrow still working there?

I hate that you’re sick! Make sure you’re eating enough. Even if you have to skip the cleanse for a few days until you’re feeling better. Hell, go crazy and eat a cookie! Maybe it’ll make you feel better – as long as it’s gluten free 🙂

Cath

Things I’m Loving

Warning: This post is not for those of you who have resolved to simplify your lives and buy less in 2012. It’s a pretty materialistic post filled with items that I’ve recently bought.

Now that you’ve been warned, let’s get started. I find that I miss Lar even more now that I’ve gone to visit her in her new home. How do I overcome my sadness? The healthy way. I buy things!

Well, this first item is actually one thing I didn’t buy: red embroidered tea container from a tea shop in Marais. We met up with my friend Celine who lives in Paris and who I haven’t seen in 7 years. It was so wonderful to see her and on top of that, she took us to her favorite tea shop and bought me this beautiful tea container.

Here’s what the tea container looks like open – so elegant! I bought some delicious loose-leaf, rooibos tea for it, which also happens to be something I can drink on my cleanse because it’s decaffeinated.

What are those lit-up white paper bags, you ask? Luminaries from Paris! They’re from a store called Merci to be exact.  I will tell you all about that great store in another post  – or maybe Lar will, she has all the photos on her camera 😉

But I digress. Back to the luminaries. I wish I could take credit for discovering them, but it was really Mark, the super-sweet owner of the apartment in Paris we rented, who should get the credit. He had them lit on the dining table the first day we arrived and they seemed so magical. So when I saw them at Merci, I snatched them up.

One of my favorite purchases from Paris is this copy of Northanger Abbey I got at Shakespeare and Co. It’s not one of my favorite Austen novels, but look how it opens!

It’s a Flipback Book! I wish they sold these in the states. My whole library would be nothing but Flipbacks. The size is perfect for carrying around in my purse and reading on the metro.

Two of my favorite nail polishes right now: TopShop nail polish in Sketch (gift from Lar) and Essie’s Limo-Scene, yep, that’s its name.

Last, but not least, my zebra scarf from Swish in Edinburgh. It reminds of this wallpaper.

_________

Dear Lar,

Just got my copy of Crazy Sexy Diet in the mail today. I don’t think I’ll ever completely give up meat and dairy, but it’s already inspired me to be healthier.

I took Toby to his first obedience class and he was great! He did such an amazing job paying attention. I can’t wait to call you on Skype and show you what we learned.

Miss you like crazy!

Tofu Beef

Lar and I are both trying to do a January cleanse. Don’t worry, it doesn’t involve apple cider vinegar or cayenne pepper. But the bad news is that it doesn’t involve meats, dairy or sugar either. So that means a lot of fruits, veggies and even more cravings.

I splurged a little bit the other day by eating “beef” with broccoli at Chinese Buddha in Midtown. They offer the real meat version too, but since I was trying to kind of stick to my cleanse (all the salt and sugar in the sauce is not on the diet), I got the tofu beef instead. What would you call it? Beefu? Tofeef?

Here I am with the happy Buddha, which I’m now realizing I totally forgot to rub his belly for good luck. That’s a thing, right? Or maybe it’s just something my mom would tell me when I was little.

Outfit details: Primark knitted scarf thing, New York and Co sweater, Madewell jeggings (I know, jeggings, but it was the weekend and I wanted an elastic waistband), socks c/o Falke, Jeffrey Campbell boots and tote from Shakespeare and Co.

Love this ring that Lar got me for Christmas. It makes me feel fancy even when I’m wearing jeggings.

The fuzziness of these Falke socks make me feel like I’m wearing cashmere on my feet.

Guess where I got my Shakespeare and Co. bag? That’s right! At Shakespeare and Co. in Paris. I’ve been wanting to go there for years and didn’t make it on my first trip seven years ago. It’s as magical as I imagined – books stacked all the way to the ceilings, little reading nooks and rickety old beds on the second floor for traveling writers. I think Lar was able to sneak in some photos even though you’re not suppose to take pictures inside. Maybe you’ll see those in a future post. . .

_________

Dearest Lar,

Do you realize we spent 2 hours today video skyping? It barely makes up for the fact that we can’t really chat too much during the week since you’re in bed by the time I get off of work. It does help that we’re doing this cleanse together. I actually look forward to drinking my kale/lettuce/celery/cucumber/pear green juice every morning. Do you? I think it’s pretty fantastic that we can encourage each other to get healthy even though we’re an ocean apart. Maybe by the time you move back to the states we’ll both be complete health nuts – although that’s hard to imagine considering that I’m still craving some Chick-Fil-A. Nom, nom, nom. At least that’s not something that can tempt you in Scotland.

Sweet dreams,

Cath

My European Wardrobe

Ah, my winter trip to Europe. I had hopes that I’d be prancing around Paris and Edinburgh looking like Carrie Bradshaw in high heels and cute winter coats. Well, in reality, my outfits were more Michelin-man meets wannabe hipster:

I spent more time outside walking along the city streets, so this was pretty much my uniform: Eddie Bauer puffer, skinny jeans, boots and some sort of head covering. The puffer was a bit warm for Paris, but it was perfect for my day trip to the highlands.

These were my two hat options that I packed: a knitted Eugenia Kim turban and my faux-fur H&M hat that makes me look like I belong in the Russian army.

I’d like to give you a whole spiel about how great it was to pack so efficiently (I fit everything into a carry-on-sized suitcase and small backpack!), and it was to some extent, but next time I’m bringing a bigger suitcase, packing more than two pairs of shoes and switching my puffer out for a nice wool coat. Or maybe I’ll just take a page out of Lar’s book and pack a handful of great pieces – she looked so chic (see photo below) and only packed a backpack for Paris.

_______

Dear Larbar,

It’s true, you looked so chic in Paris with your Primark coat and Hunter wedges. It totally inspired me to try to dress better.

This is my all time favorite photo that Troy took of you and Dexin:

I’ve already started saving up for my next trip to come visit you!

Here’s to 2012!

Dear AsianCajuns Readers,

Thanks for sticking with us throughout all of our crazy changes this year!

What do you all have planned for tonight?

I’ll be ringing in the new year with black eyed peas (a southern tradition) and cava (er, my own tradition), and Lar will be celebrating Hogmanay in Edinburgh with a torchlight procession down the Royal Mile – I’m so jealous!

See you all in 2012!

XOXO,

Cath and Lar

__________

Dearest Lar,

I cried like a bumbling idiot in the taxi on the way to the Edinburgh airport. I’m determined to start saving up starting now so I can come back and see you in the summer. It’s just not natural to have twins be apart from each other for so long.

I’ll try to skype you at 7 p.m. my time (midnight your time) to wish you a happy new year!

Pre Paris Party

investigate this site levitra

Ladies and gentlemen, I am a lucky lady. Not only do I get to go to Paris tomorrow and meet up with my twin sister/bestie, I had the chance to attend a party full of Atlanta fashion bloggers tonight and got a free pair of shoes from Sole Society.

The party and free shoes are all thanks to Eboni of The Fashionista Next Door. That’s her with me in the photo below.

You know what’s so great about being around other fashion bloggers? No one gives you a weird look when you whip out your camera and start taking pictures of everything or get super excited over everyone’s outfit.

The party was at Sunny’s Hair and Wig shop, which I’ve been wanting to check out forever. I’m desperate for some clip-in extensions so I can have long hair again – whenever I feel like it. I got a little too distracted tonight by the good company, free wine and gorgeous shoes to really take a good look at the extensions, so I’ll be back after my trip.

Just want to do a quick shout out to all the amazing ladies I met tonight – and will be adding them to our blogroll once I find some place with wi-fi in Paris:

Lily Kai, Fashion Without Guilt, Makeup By Ren, Imperfect Concepts, Oh! Nikka, Curls Coils and Kinks, Charee Lenee, and Shandart Productions.

Speaking of local bloggers, Erica of Erica + Rice, asked me to spread the word about a great holiday donation program her high school is hosting:

Erica made the poster herself and she’s only in high school!

Dearest Larbar,

I get to see you in 24 hours!!! I missed you more than ever tonight at the blogger get together and can’t wait to tell you all about it. I’m so buzzed that I’m supposed to wake up in 5 hours and don’t even feel sleepy! Although I also feel a little loopy and might have multiple spelling/grammatical errors on this post. Please feel free to edit while I’m flying over the Atlantic tomorrow.

See you in Paris!

Fringe

I’m trying really hard not too get too excited about my upcoming trip until I’m done with my final exam next Monday, but I can feel the excitement bubbling up. I also can’t help but get excited this time of year. I love the whole hype that comes with the holidays – even the dreaded gift giving/buying part. I blame my giddiness on my mom. She knows how to do Christmas decor right and would decorate our house top to bottom every year.

She’s toned down the decor a bit since Lar and I have moved out, but she still does makes the house look amazing every year. Here’s just a taste of some of our mom’s holiday decor this year:

See what I mean about her decorating skills? Who wouldn’t love the holidays with a mom like that?!

I spent the weekend finishing a paper, making holiday gifts and going on the Decatur Candlelight Home Tour – it was no Edinburgh Castle tour, but it was fun! And of course Troy and I stopped by Ale Yeah for some beer on Sunday, because, you know, we can.

Outfit details: Sweater from Lila in Inman Park, Alternative tank, Blank cords, Mango boots and Asos purse.

________

Dear Larbar,

I love seeing photos of you at the Castle! I definitely visited it when we were studying there, but I can’t remember if we went together. I love the little chapel that’s there – the oldest building in the city. It’s so cool to step out from the chapel and see the whole city.

Only a week and a half left!

Sunday Alcohol Sales

Woohoo! It’s now legal to sell alcohol on Sundays in Decatur! That’s me below picking up some Sam Smith Winter Warmer on a SUNDAY!!!

For those of you who live in states with more, er, progressive alcohol sale laws, this might not sound like a big deal. But imagine getting invited to a Sunday brunch and offering to bring mimosas then waking up on Sunday and realizing you haven’t bought any champagne. Yep, you’re S.O.L. Or how about you make a delicious penne alla arrabiata on a Sunday evening and you realize you don’t have an equally delicious red wine to pair with it. Oh well! Or what if your bf invites friends over every Sunday for some marathon NFL watching and you realize you have absolutely no beer in the fridge – only an old pitcher of pink lemonade Crystal Light. Curses!

You see? Life without Sunday sales in Georgia has been rough.

Look at Troy (below), happy as a clam with a box full of craft beer from Ale Yeah – our neighborhood craft beer market that’s within walking distance from our house. For those of you who are curious, we picked up a Sierra Celebration, Skullsplitter from Orkney Brewery, Bridgeport Kingpin Double Red and Unibroue Ephemere.

Am I starting to sound like a lush? My apologies, I’m just so excited by this change that will make my life a little bit easier. I know, I know first world problems.

Now on to some equally important stuff. . . my new sweater! I got it for Paris – it looks tres chic, no? I figure you can’t go wrong with black and white stripes in France.

Outfit details: Free People sweater, Blank cords, Asos boots (from Lar).

______

Dearest Lar,

Come to think of it, you can’t buy alcohol on Sundays in Edinburgh, right? I just vaguely remember the beer and wine aisle at Tesco being blocked off on Sundays. Maybe I’m just making that up.

I can’t wait until we’re shopping at Merci together – in our unfashionable winter coats! Less than three weeks from now!

Stylish Outerwear

I had all these plans to take great outfit/blog photos this weekend, but instead have spent the last three days in oversized t-shirts and stretchy pants nursing a cold/flu/sinus infection. And what makes matters worse is that I don’t have any backlogged outfit photos that I can post.

I’ve been so busy the past few weeks that the only photos I have are from the Decatur Wine Festival. I usually try to dress decently for the wine fest (i.e. boots, nice jeans, a tailored jacket), but not this year! I ended up helping out/working for most of the day. This is what I wore:

That’s my dad on the left! He doesn’t even drink wine, but the free food enticed him. You can’t really see my whole boring outfit, so here’s a little collage of what I wore:

It doesn’t get much more blah than a fleece jacket, jeans and boots. The only little bit of style I had was the gloves I had just purchased from Vivid Boutique ($10!). They’re the kind of gloves that can be worn as mittens or finger-less gloves, which come in handy when you’re trying to text on your iphone/droid.

I use to have a pair just like these when I was young and have been looking for a similar pair ever since. I have a feeling I’ll get a lot of use out of them this winter.

Glove happiness aside, I am a little concerned about my cold-weather sartorial choices. Like Lar, I end up going for warmth over fashion once it gets below 35 degrees. I know, I’m a wuss, but I blame it on Atlanta’s temperate winters. Nevertheless, I’ll be spending a whole week in Paris in December and am super worried I’ll end up looking like this:

When I so desperately want to look like this:

Yeah, it’s a total pipe dream, but I’m holding on to it! I’m packing a mid-length winter coat and hoping some cute winter accessories like this Eugenia Kim turban headband and a brightly colored snood like this one might help things out. I’ll keep you all posted. I’m sure Lar and I will take so many photos in Paris you’ll be sick of seeing us wrapped up in our (hopefully stylish) winter garb.

——-

Dearest Lar,

What are your Paris outfit plans? I know you don’t have many clothes over there in Scotland, but you have that really cute J.Crew puffer and super cute scarves and hats. Plus, now you have those gorgeous new boots from that store with the weird name. I want to go to there!

I’m not as concerned about what I’ll wear in Scotland. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’d love to go all Brigadoon:

But something tells me that’s not so practical 😉 Plus Edinburgh isn’t as much of a fashion capital as Paris. I wouldn’t feel guilty about wearing fleece in Scotland.

Love you!

Cath

Fall Fashion

I’m so glad it got a little chilly in Atlanta today. Earlier this week it felt like summer and that’s just not right when Thanksgiving is just a week away. I know I’ll be cursing myself next month when I’m freezing my butt off in Paris, but right now I can’t wait for the colder, holiday weather.

I ran into Cameron of Atlanta Street Fashion the other day and he was sweet enough to take this photo:

Outfit details: New York and Company sweater, secondhand jacket from Lar, Blank cords and Frye boots.

Last weekend Troy and I went out with some friends to Murphy’s for brunch. The company was awesome and the food was delicious.

Now you might ask why my friend Chloe has a piece of food over her face in the photo below. Well, she’s an uber talented food blogger that likes to stay anonymous, but I wanted to include this photo because I love her outfit.

And just because Lar hinted for me to include photos of my place, here’s a sneak peak. I’ll take some more photos later – once I’ve cleaned up a bit 😉

———-

Dear Lar,

I can’t believe Christmas/fairy lights are so expensive over in Scotland! But don’t worry about decorating for us. I already love what you’ve done with your place and can’t wait for the next blog installment.

I made Chess Squares tonight for a holiday party at work and they remind me so much of you. Let’s make them when we’re in Scotland together. I would say that we should make them in Paris, but I think we’ll have plenty of pastries to eat there!

Love, Cath
