When The South Freezes Over

Supposedly it snowed here over Christmas, but as Cath and I were at the beach and saw no proof (apart from the occasional FB photo), we doubt it actually happened. This is certainly the most snow I’ve seen since moving to Atlanta/Decatur ten years ago. We might have one or two days of snow a year in the South, but it almost never manages to stick to the ground, and our snowmen are usually more mudmen (30% snow/ice, 70% Georgia red clay). But this is for real! Most Southerners I know don’t own a snow shovel or have ever seen a snow plow lumber down their streets. Three inches and some mean ice means we are essentially house bound.

So like all snow-excited Southerners, I bounded(ish) out of bed this morning and ran around taking photos of the snow. I warn you snow-weary Northerners, your facebook news feed will be flooded with Southern friends and their snow photos (mine included). I took a few moody shots for you all to enjoy or skip depending on your scale of wintry jadedness.

P.S. Thank you again for all the supportive comments and advice about my wedding planning (or lack thereof). I’m still in turmoil over what to do. Every time I feel like ripping out of my hair, I’ll come back to your comments and reread them while cuddling my shoes.

  1. i hear that it’s sheer pandemonium down there! one of the many things i miss about the south is the fact that it rarely snows, but if it does, everything shuts down and people hibernate. however here, i will get up, dig my car out of snow, shovel and/or salt the path to my car and then drive in my southern (read: no 4wd) suv down my un-plowed street hoping that they’ve plowed the main roads. they don’t care that back at home i wouldn’t be going to work in this stuff.

    we miss snow days!!!

have you set a wedding date?! i planned my wedding in 4 months- you can do it!

  2. I am scared of snow ! Lol Last time I tried to drive in it someone slid and hit my car. When it snows I stay in.
I Love your leopard coat and hat. Very Chic.

  3. It’s expected to snow here too! One of the reasons why a huge snowfall is such a big deal in the south is probably because it’s so unexpected, yes? Nobody has snow tires on, the hardware stores don’t have enough road salt or snow shovels, the airports don’t have defrosting equipment for the planes.but hey, it’s a great excuse for a snow day.

  4. such a cute post.
and im so exited about the wedding still .such great news.
it’s been snowing here -like all the time but then it gets worse and now it’s just ice ice baby and i keep falling.
ah i want spring/summer – or anything close to it.
    xx

  5. I’m definitely loving the snow, especially since classes were canceled both today and yesterday! Also, I love your coat! Where did you find it? I’ve been looking for a while, but I can’t find one that fits well!

  7. Love that first one. That looks like really wet snow, be careful driving! We’re supposed to get hit hard tonight. I’m actually hoping for it this time so I can be housebound tomorrow hahaha.

  8. Oh man I haven’t visited in a while and I’ve missed that you’re getting married!!!! That’s awesome 🙂

So to make up for it, congratulations congratulations congratulations! Adore the engagement photos and I can imagine how scary it is to organise a wedding- but maybe a small intimate wedding is all you need? As long as you’re both happy etc since it’s YOUR special day. Either way, it’s going to be a day to remember 🙂 I’m so happy for you Lar!

Looks like you guys are enjoying the snow! I loved it while it lasted in the UK but it’s also really nice that it’s all gone.
