Faux Fur

ac_style_logo

Cath and I have favored fake fur for a few years: a couple of hats, an awesome blanket Cath got me for Christmas two years ago, etc. We try to stay away from real fur as much as we can- even if it’s vintage I can’t bring myself to put it on. Our grandmother’s mink coat has spooked me since my mom inherited it many moons ago.

Here is a showing of our more recently acquired fauxfur love:

Cath and I both bought this hat last year at H&M. It has become a winter closet staple for both of us. I think it’s faux red fox, and wonderfully warm. These photos of Cath are by her bf Troy Cono.

Cath made me this fauxfur vest for Christmas. Isn’t it marvelous?! I’ve already worn it about five times in the past two weeks. I think it’s my favorite thing in my entire closet. She got the idea from DIY queen Maegan– see how it’s done here. (Anyone spot the $1.60 Bottega Veneta bag? I still wiggle my toes in happiness every time I look at the thing).

This was a belated Christmas present to myself (one of many– ah cha cha!). Mango was having a great sale post-Christmas and I’d been eying faux leopard for about four months now. I’m so glad I was self-centered caved and bought it! It’s the softest, most delicious-feeling thing I own. I kind of feel like a plush teddy bear in it (it’s quite bulky which is not too friendly on my petite frame), but I love it and never want to take it off. I’ve contemplated sleeping in it a number of times. We’ll see if I give in. Sound awesome? Get it here– it’s still about 50% off!

How do you guys feel about faux fur? To me it’s like diamonds. I have an uber-untrained eye so I can’t really tell the difference between a lot of real fur and fake fur. Someone could show me a sparkly piece of plastic and a diamond and I would go for the plastic. And I care about as much about real gemstones as I do about looking a bit cheesy in fake fur. I also feel better not wearing a cuddly animal on my body just to look chic (I’m okay with the killing of venomous spiders and cockroaches, but not most animals). What say you on the matter?

p.s. Thank you for all the sweet feedback on the 2009 Recap post! We’re hoping to rock your socks off this year with even better outfitage!

  1. Love it! You’re going to wear that new Mango coat a million ways — I can just tell!

The vest photos are fabulous as well. I actually wore a tassel necklace yesterday that I DIYed after reading one of the fantastic Miz Maegan’s posts.

As for your resolution, let’s do it! Perhaps grabbing a coffee (or a beer) and hitting up Last Chance or the Northlake GW.

One of my resolutions will be to encourage more people to buy secondhand. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. cute cute cute!

p.s. yes i should take more photos and post but i am not as photogenic and never know how to pose. and also a very lazy photo taker, especially photos of myself!

  3. Hi there-the leopardprint faux fur is just perfection, thats a real bargain buy, lucky you!! Adoring the Bottega Veneta too!! I wanted one of those faux fur hats too, I think I’ve missed out this winter, so I’ll be looking out for one next winter!!

  4. Ooh that coat is tres chic and tres cute!
And wow to Cath’s vest. Ah-mazing!!!
I think faux fur is one of the best things invented ever! I do have some real coat with real fur though.vintage if that helpsI don’t think I could buy a “new” fur. I wore one once and this older lady stopped to tell me how much she loved that I was wearing real fur cause “young people” don’t wear it enough these days. But most days, I feel guilty with the real stuff.

  5. The vest and bag are awesome and I skrieked when I saw how you put the vest together both times.tres chic!
I’m okay with fur in some ways. If they use the whole animal I am okay with it.ie. Rabbit.people use the fur and eat rabbit so its okay. Seal sand horses, etc.not so keen on. Oh and I’m totally okay with vintage furs.

  6. I would never wear real animals, but I love faux fur, at least the kind that looks real. I consider myself having quite a trained eye and I’ve dismissed a lot of coats and and other garments just because they looked so fake!

  7. Also a huge fan of faux fur and would never wear real fur. (Animals used in fur coats are usually raised in crappy conditions *for* fur, and their whole bodies aren’t usually used, fyi, above poster.that usage of animals was more back-in-the-days-of-yore when fur was less an industry and people did most things themselves.)

I think the faux fur coat is adorable as well – I think you can get away with a coat cut like that even if it’s bulky and you’re petite because it’s obvious that the shape is a result of the coat’s cut.

  8. hello darlings. you always look so happy. such a joy to drop by your blog and see your smiles and stylish clothes ๐Ÿ™‚ i hope youve eaten the gingerbread houses by now? i would’ve loved to be there with you gals. maybe some day we’ll meet ๐Ÿ™‚
i dont like real fur either. i dont get why its neccessary. faux fur is all around- much cheaper and i think its warm enough.
    happy new year!
im back from my hiatus ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. i have a few real fur pieces but no faux fur yet. I have been eye a couple this season but it gets pretty warm in CA so furs, real or faux, don’t get much use by moi here. : )

  10. My mom loves real fur, Not me. I’m a faux fan.
That coat is amazing, I want one like that, and the hat is so cool.

    Thanks for your lovely comment!!

  11. I can’t imagine wearing real fur, especially because faux fur nowadays looks fantastic and is cruelty-free. Your pieces are great examples of how it doesn’t need to be real to be great fashion!

  12. You two totally rock the faux fur look! I only have a faux fur lined hooded sweater, but you’re making me wish that I had more options. hmmmm.

  13. I feel the same way about fur – even if it’s vintage I would rather stay away from. That’s why faux fur is fabulous!

  14. that coat is gorgeous! And Cath MADE that vest? Serious skills, it looks amazing. It reminds of Where The Wild Things Are for Opening Ceremony (which is making me lust after a faux fur skirt of all things)

  15. Such a fab post! I am a faux fur fantatic and will not wear any real fur either. I have a grey vintage faux fur hat and a few coats! I have inherited vintage real fur and donated it to the humane society- they have a program that uses the fur for animals! Some people might think that wasn’t the way to use my great aunt’s coat but I will not wear it- period.
Here’s the HSUS link You are both lovely and fashionably cruelty free!

  16. I’m all about faux fur. It doesn’t stink as much when it gets wet, it’s easily cleanable at the dry cleaner (I think), it doesn’t disintegrate into nasty particles of old skin and dandruff like vintage fur does, and it was made without harming animals. However, the flip side is that most faux fur is made out of man-made, carbon emitting and chemical laden materials, which, sadly, pollutes the environment terribly and thereby also harms many animals. I think there really is no “up side” to wearing fur in any medium.
However, it doesn’t totally stop me from loving the look. I have a vintage faux fur coat I got from my husband (also Nate!)’s grandmother, and I love it to death. I just can’t wear it.

And on real fur, I feel less hateful of vintage fur, because there was no stopping the slaying of the animal that died for it, and it is better to wear something that has not sacrificed an already living animal in today’s world than something that did. but that being said, it still somehow kind of sends a message, if worn, that wearing fur is okay, which has the inference that killing animals for fashion is alright, which it is not.

    Conundrum!

  17. That vest is so cool. Awesome DIY!
Hmmm. about fur. This issue has plagued me for the past few months. I do have some fur and I do wear it but my awareness has been raised in the last while and my opinion is changing. I think I would feel better about fur if they animals were treated humanely and the whole animal was used (even in dog-food) but that is not the case. For now, I wear what I have but I haven’t purchased anything real in years and I have made a conscious decision not to, even if I find something fabulous while thrifting.

  18. I don’t have any strong opinions about the fur issue. I do have some real fur pieces and wear them discretely when I can. but I try not to overdo it. Because I know people are really passionate about the fur thing in NY!

Cath, you look so adorable, especially that shot of you sitting at the table in your chic ensemble ๐Ÿ™‚

  19. That vest is so well-made — so great that it was DIY!
I love how you two paired your faux fur items, and that Bottega Veneta bag is amazing!
I’m icked out by real fur.it makes me feel like Cruella De Ville.

  20. I am with you on the faux fur. I can’t bring myself to wear/purchase real fur, even if it is vintage and lovely. I guess it’s the inner hippie/vegetarian in me ๐Ÿ™‚ You both look so great! Where did you get that red and grey skirt, Lar? I am on the hunt for skirts. and a great faux fur jacket. Like the one Sienna Miller wore in the remake of Alfie!

  21. Faux fur, real vintage fur, I’m down with it all. Just don’t go all Cruella Deville on us. I can’t really say anything-I’m all for leather and eating meat, so there you go. Oh and leopard print anything is another birthright of all girls. Oh and Happy New Year kids.

  22. Ahhh, I’m loving this post and faux fur!! The hat, vest, coat amazingness all around.

SO you and Cath will need to read my post about faux fur on Mon. I have something special funny planned. ๐Ÿ™‚

Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

    xo, Becs

  23. first of all that vest is amazing!!!! i’ve been looking for a vintage leopard coat for ages.i know exactly what i’m looking for and just haven’t had any luck!

  24. i totally agree with you!
and i know that a lot of girls that care about the animals will satisfy the fur craving by buying vintage furs but I honestly still see it as a carcass and the smell never really goes away.
i love leather & suede, but the rest looks too much like the animal when it was alive and it creeps me out. my mom has an old fur she got in the 70’s and it’s repulsive (she never wears it and regrets buying it).
I love the looks on you two! especially Cath’s vest outfit with the red, it’s gorgeous!
    xx
