I’m With the Band

larstyle_logo_rev

In high school Cath was in the marching band (french horn/mellophone), and I . uh. sadly got left out of all the fun. I missed out on all the band regalia: plumed hats, tuxedo trousers, stiff uncomfortable and heavy jackets with brassy buttons.

But- ah ha!- now (9 years later) I too have a stiff, uncomfortable, but oh-so-chic marching band jacket I found at  local thrift store (locals, it was a few doors down from Young Blood and they had an old rack full of them in the basement). I had it altered to fit a bit better, and now it’s one of my favorite items in my closet. It’s warm, it’s nostalgic (kinda), and makes Balmain jealous.

I wore it with skinny black pants, my thigh-highs, a $2 leather purse I partially studded last year, black fingerless gloves, and my greek fisherman hat.

I don’t know if I would pass drum major inspection, but I could successfully play a Sousa march for sure (on the violin).

ps- Sorry for the slow-down on comments, lovely readers! I’ll be back in town tonight and can’t wait to catch-up on your blogs.

  1. One year of band was enough for me. I can’t do it. Even after all these years, I can’t touch anything related to band. At least orchestra was somewhat classy.

  2. Okay, the last sentence sounds a bit snide. It’s totally not meant that way. We had banging outfits for orchestra (fitted black floor length dresses with a bias cut – omg, why didn’t I keep that dress???) but had to wear khakis (gross) with logo polo shirts (double gross) for band.

  3. Oh! Hahahaha. You sound like you’re snickering behind your hands that you didn’t join the marching band. Those thigh high boots. You’re still the only girl on the blogosphere who wears those with style.

  4. This fit looks like so much fun. Stands out without being too “costumey” which is what happens sometimes when people incorporate pieces like that coat.

  5. Lar, can you tell me which store??! i need to pick one of those up.i NEED to! there are so many thrift/vintage stores down in the highlands.help?!

  6. p.s great minds do think alike! i am going to do all 3 in this years costume! so it should be fun! beehive hair, harajuku makeup and amywine house with a super hero kick to it. let’s hope it works out as planned! i can’t wait to see what you will be!

  7. You look so cute! Those thigh high boots seriously fit you to a tee. Great find with the jacket, esp. because of the red color!

    xo, Becs

  8. You are so cute missy! Sorry you got left out from all the fun.but better late than never 🙂 Love the details in the sleeves.funny, not sure I would’ve noticed/appreciated that detail if I saw it worn in a marching band.I guess you see what you want to see 🙂
    xx

  9. totally jealous. all my friends are in marching band and they always look like they’re having so much fun! I totally love the jacket, and you paired it perfectly with your outfit. I’m so behind on blogs too

  10. totally hot jacket – love that it’s vintage too and has a story behind it.

I love thigh highs too but i’m shortnot sure if i can pull it off.

  11. I AM SO JEALOUS! i love this jacket, if i were in Georgia I would have it. It’s such a great color and the fit is perfect! nice outfit.

I’ve been waiting to get a 20 euro black cheap military cardigan but it is not as exciting. But it is still more exciting then a 40 dollar black Gap cardigan. 🙂

  12. LOVE this outfit!!! I have to find some great boots, a red band jacket, and fingerless gloves to knock it off. One of my all-time favorites from you guys!
