One Blazer, Two Ways, Kind Of

cathstyle_logo_rev

So while Lar and I were in NOLA I did what all the locals do and went shopping at Urban Outfitters. I know, I know, it’s shameful to go to a chain store when you’re traveling, but in this case I’m so glad I did because I found the best blazer on the sales rack. It’s a thin, silk, double breasted, black blazer with slim-cut arms. I love how it makes every outfit look pulled together. Since it has been a little chilly in Atlanta, I’ve been wearing it with everything.

Exhibit 1:

U.O. blazer, U.O. tshirt, Blank cords from Rockit and Payless boots.

The necklace I’m wearing is one I bought for Lauren on our birthday from a local salon. It’s a mix of silver, gray and black chains hooked together.

Exhibit B:

U.O. blazer, Anthropologie blouse, Bitten by SJP jeans and secondhand boots.

It’s no Brooks Brother suit, but I think this blazer is pretty alright. I’m sure I’ll wear it out before the season is over.

Puffy Sleeves

ac_style_logo

While in New Orleans, Cath and I were attracted to the same small, dark and handsome knit dress. I think it all had to do with the puffy sleeves (a big selling point for us since we were three).

You might think as twins one of us could purchase the dress, and we could share it. Nope. We don’t share. I know that’s disappointing to most people, because that’s one of those assumed perks of being a twin: twice the clothes, twice the shoes. It just doesn’t work like that. Every (and I mean every) time we try to share, we want to wear that one item the same exact day. A fight ensues, and someone ends up feeling very put out.

The lesson learned? Buy two of everything.

Look how happy we look when we don’t have to share:

As you guys have surmised from this blog, we also have different styles. We thought we would take this puff-sleeved opportunity to show you how we style the same item of clothing.

Cath:
Belt and leggings from Tarjay, shoes are Dulce Vita via Eviva.

Lar:

Belt and shoes are Tarjay, skirt is from Anne Taylor (about nine years old- eesh!), feather earrings are June Shin

Oh! And we also have different size feet. Mine are nearly a whole size larger than Cath’s. No shoe sharing. I know!! Where’s the justice in that? Though, come to think of it, we’ll probably be even worse about sharing Louboutins if we ever get the opportunity.

We hope you guys had a wonderful weekend! We spent ours at the Decatur Beer Festival and getting to know the great people behind 944 Magazine (more on that to come).

Bright Star

Catherine and I are both girly girls. Okay, I might be girlier (see above outfit for proof). That doesn’t mean I adore pink and ruffles, I just like a bit of softness and beauty every once and a while- not exactly the trend at the moment. I mean, I’ve embraced the studs, bandage dresses, leather, flannel and cut-offs of the last couple of seasons, but I get really excited when I see something unabashedly feminine.

Earlier this week we took our mom to see Bright Star, a gorgeous movie by Jane Campion about John Keats’ love, Fanny Brawne. The music, the scenery, the clothes, the art direction, the acting- everything in this movie is beautiful. Watch the trailer here. This movie isn’t snarky or action-packed or gory, nor does it contain a single vampire or zombie- but I love it for that. I had forgotten what it was like just to revel in something that is beautiful and true (their love story isn’t a fairy tale and is based on real letters between Keats and Brawne).

Fashionistas, you’ll enjoy Fanny’s costumes most of all (see the photos below). Who doesn’t love a Regency era fashion designer? Apparently a present-day Keats would have totally swooned over our blogs. Yeah. I’ll keep this thing up if I get a sonnet it out of it.

Get thee to a movie theater and watch it. You too, gentlemen readers- especially if you like literature and/or history. I think more of this sort of thing in everyone’s life  balances out all the turdiness that life can throw your way. (Did I just write “turdiness”? Oh yes, Keats would have loved this blog).

Happy Friday, Everyone!!!

Free Tees!

Our very talented friends at The Wren’s Nest (oldest house museum in Atlanta, home of Joel Chandler Harris, author of the Uncle Remus tales- you remember now, don’t you?) asked us to take a few shots of their t-shirts for their online store (click here to check our their shop).

Renaissance man (musician and photographer) Troy Cono took the photos of Cath- I love them! My handy remote took mine. Oh, I’m assuming you guys can tell us apart: Cath has the bangs and looks professionally photographed 😉

Oh and hey, didn’t I mention something about free tees? I’ll let Lain, executive director of The Wren’s Nest, explain it to you:

Read 5 Brer Rabbit stories, complete this form, and turn it in at the Wren’s Nest. We’ll give you your choice of t-shirt. Want to read 20 stories and collect all 4? That’s A-OK too (just not all at once! We gotta pay the bills, after all).

Too cool to read 5 Brer Rabbit stories? Shirts are $15. Don’t have any Brer Rabbit stories? Here, let’s get you some.

Now is that a deal or is that a deal? You get to read (book worms unite!) and you get a cute free tee for doing it!

Happy reading!!!

p.s. They come in children and adult sizes.

p.p.s. Speaking of tees, Cath and I will be hanging out with The Process and Esperanza guys tonight at the Graveyard Tavern. Locals, stop on by- let us know if and when you’re coming! We’d love to see you!

Hey, Mr. Postman

So a few weeks ago my new Norwegian Wood Corset reminded me of a Sargent painting, today it’s my bf’s hat (and mustache) that reminds me of a Van Gogh painting. I think I’m a little starved of art history classes (it’s been a few years since university), so I hope you guys don’t mind me getting all Sister Wendy on you (Don’t know who Sister Wendy is? Go here and listen to her tell Bill Moyers about art. You’ll be a changed person. Or at least entertained by a nun- I swear).

My bf is less hirsute than Van Gogh’s gentleman, and their hats differ in design, but they relate as a portrait pairing. Or maybe I just really, really like men in hats (and mustaches) with a hint of fauvism. Rahhh! (cat claw motion).

Let me know when you guys get tired of the art history lessons. Working in design I don’t have much of an outlet for my secret desire to just sit in museums all day and drool at paintings, so it seeps into this “fashion” blog.

Happy midweek! It’s almost almost Friday!

Goodbye Summer!

cathstyle_logo_rev

So I finally got around to adding a few photos under the Cath Style page. The images are from a weekend trip I took to Savannah with my bf in the summer, which is fitting because I think, given the weather this week, the long Atlanta summer is officially over. Today was rainy and chilly. I got completely soaked wearing opened-toed heels and a skirt. I need to follow Lar’s example and start unpacking my winter clothes.

cathstyle_savannah

I’ll try to remember to update the Cath Style page more often and get Lar to do the same.

PS: Lar and I just went to see Bright Star tonight. For those of you who love the regency era, period films, Keats, poetry, beautiful scenery, attention to detail and/or brilliant acting, go see this film!

Versatile Layers

larstyle_logo_rev

So I really do think this past weekend might have been our last hurrah at summer. We had sun, we had heat (80s, right?) and I turned on our air conditioning on Saturday. I decided to embrace this last gasp of Southern summer with sleeveless layering.

floral4

(Outer to inner layer) Heliotrope earrings, Forever21 vest and belt, Tracy Feith for Target dress (“dress”? it’s more like a tunic- a short tunic), Target bubble skirt, New Orleans Mardis Gras mask.

floral3

floral1

I dressed the layers down with some old denim and my “Roman Holiday” sandals (really from Florence, but Gregory Peck doesn’t need to know) when I went to the Oakhurst Arts And Music Festival on Saturday.

floral2

Ooo I still love this torso ring from Evolve Boutique. I don’t wear it too often because it’s a bit big for me, but I think it’s lovely.

floral_ring

Apart from the Oakhurst Festival, Cath and I went to Cooper Sanchez’s show at Oakland Cemetery, I pulled out my winter clothes and reorganized my closet (with much cursing and muttering), and had a delicious Sunday dinner with family and friends.

Hope you guys had a marvelous weekend!!! What are you up to this week?

Tough Call: Esperanza vs The Process

logo_aroundatl

For those of you who have been loyally following us for a while (we love you!), you know that we’re big fans of the two Atlanta apparel/design groups known as Esperanza and The Process/Epidemik Coalition (evidence here, here, here, here, here, here and here). So we’re a little doubtful that one is going to triumph over the other at this Thursday’s Graveyard Tavern shindig when they go head to head in a number of bar-related challenges. Nevertheless, there’s no doubt that it’ll be entertaining! And of course the Esperanza and Process guys can’t have an event without an awesome tee. This Thursday they will be showing off a special new collaboration tee. Esperanza and Process unite!!

graveyard

What is the point of duking it out, you ask? To warm-up for Esperanza and Process’ Hawks Season Opener block party on the 28th. One ticket to the party will get you a center-court seat, pregame tailgate, Chick-Fil-A meal, courtside access for pregame warm-ups, and a gift bag.

hawks

Lar and I don’t know much about sports (I actually had to double check that the Hawks were the basketball team while writing this post), but even I’m tempted by the tailgating, gift bags and all around fun that’s guaranteed when these two companies host a party.

See you at The Graveyard this week and buy your block party tickets here. May the best t-shirt/graphic design team win/tie!

Russian Doll

larstyle_logo_rev

russiandoll1

It is far too hot in Atlanta even in the fall to wear this type of faux animal on your head, but somehow it ties this outfit together nicely (or I just like playing dress-up when I get home from a long day at the office).

This outfit came about because I was stuck as to what to do with this Tracy Feith sweater. I bought it this summer at Tarjay and imagined me wearing it over a bikini after a long day of surfing, snuggled up to my bf on the beach in front of a bonfire. I live about five hours from the closest beach, I can’t swim (waves scare the bejesus out of me when I’m standing on the beach), and very few beaches let you do the whole fire on the sand thing. So this sweater got a lot of use, obviously. Enter fall, and fall colors! Orange and browns and creams.

russiandoll4

And then I just happen to have this Russian Doll pillow that wears the same orange- hence the non sequitur post title! Woohoo for whimsy!

russiandoll2

I also like to dance a jig after the long work day. My neighbors below hate me and my boots.

russiandoll3

This is what I actually looked like – I left the pillow and hat at home for the day.

Hope you guys have a wonderful weekend!

ps- Thanks for all the sweet comments about the Over-the-Knee boots! You guys make my week!! You’ll see them a lot come winter. and perhaps sooner for Halloween. Lady Gaga fans, anyone?

Thigh Highs and a Jacket

larstyle_logo_rev

thighhighs5

I am now 100% ready for the Fall. I don’t enjoy the colder weather and the shorter days (and what’s with the depressing rain, ATL?). The layers are fun and I like jackets (like this faux leather doo-dad I have on), but what I really live for during cold weather is the boots.

This year I finally succumbed to the over-the-knee trend. I toyed with the idea last year, but didn’t pounce until I saw these Jeffrey Campbells a few months ago. I decided if I wanted to do over-the-knee I really had to commit. I wanted the boot as high up the leg as possible (not just kissing the knee)- and these fit perfectly and feel divine.

thighhighs4

To keep them from looking too “Lady of the Night” I’ll avoid miniskirts and pair them with oversized tops and skinny pants. My old men’s H&M shirt grazes the tops of the boots- I like that. Good work, chambray.

thighhighs2

thighhighs3

What do you guys think? Are you a fan of the Pretty Women boots or no? You know either way I’ll wear them around until it gets back up to the 80 degrees next spring, but I’m curious to know what you think when you see boots this tall (tall or high?). If the you are looking for an over-the-knee boot sans heel, check out these gorgeous ones the lovely Becs of Style with Benefits found.

Happy Hump Day!
