Vacation Recovery

Sorry for the slow blogging these last few days! Do you ever have those vacations where you come back more tired and grumpy than before?

I was so excited about our trip to our old home-state (Maryland! Crabs! Family! Friends!), but I managed to give Cath and Matt a stomach flu. If you had any doubts before, stomach flu and 14-hour road trips do not mix well. Between the three of us being sick I think we had 4 good days sans nausea – so we had to make the most of it.

Look, here is Cath (pre-stomach flu) looking so cute, prepping for Maryland crabs and cold beer (nom!):

Once you get outside of the trashier bits of Ocean City (I use the descriptor “trashy” fondly), there are some great gems like roadside farm stands:

. and wild ponies/horses on Assateague Island:

Ooo and crab cakes, sweet corn and Boardwalk fries (again pre-stomach flu):

Watching clouds that look like jelly fishies! Does that only happen by the ocean?

Running away from dinosaurs:

Then hiding from them:

Cloudy beaches:

Yummy fruity drinks (that would have been alcoholic if I hadn’t just gotten over the stomach flu):

I apologize if I just said “stomach flu” like three million times in one post. I find it funny though, if you just look at these pics, it looks like we had a perfect vacay and I should be feeling nicely tanned and perfectly refreshed.  I didn’t take any photos of me gripping a plastic bag around my face and shivering in the front seat of the car. I wouldn’t want to inflict that on any of our lovely readers, but that’s kind of what I think of when someone asks “How was your vacation?!” “My wahh-huh?”

And we missed you guys! We’ll be back to regular blogging (sans mention of beach or flu) shortly!

About Scotland.

Have you guys noticed in past posts what nutters we are for Scotland? Cath and I studied abroad in Edinburgh in 2004 and then Matt (Monsieur Mustachio) and I visited last year – which actually began this whole moving thing.

Since studying abroad, Cath and I have always said if the we could move to Scotland we would in a heartbeat. Once again, we have no idea where all this Celtic love crept in. We have no Scottish ancestry (German, yup. French, check. Irish, English, Danish, check, check, check. Chinese – but not Scottish). Studying in Edinburgh was a bit of a whim (I wasn’t even sure exactly where Scotland was located in the UK before we went there — file that under “things you shouldn’t admit in public,” please). But Scotland wrapped us in its green, peaty, woolly bear hug, and we couldn’t wait to go back at the first chance.

Now I have a chance to move there with the man of my dreams (that’s you again, Mr. Mustachio), and I’m really, truly excited, but the excitement is very strongly tempered with a heavy dose of *&%!-I-Won’t-See-My-Twinie-For-6-Months-At-A-Time!!! I’m so not okay with that. I don’t think Cath is either. In fact, we haven’t really discussed it, have we, Kitcath?

So that’s where you come in, AsianCajun readers. We’ll be morphing this blog to be a bit like a twin love letter to keep in touch with each other and you. Cath will tell me everything she is up to in the big peachy ATL, and I’ll tell her everything I do stomping around in my rain boots in Edinburgh.

These changes will happen at the end of the summer (I’ll be moving in September), but I just wanted to give you guys a heads up.

p.s. That photo above obviously has nothing to do with Scotland, but my expression is kind of how I feel: wistful, bittersweet. (Actually, that’s what I look like when I wear too many clothes on a hot humid Atlanta afternoon, and I start grimacing because I can feel another fat drop of sweat roll down my back).

Magical Monday

Most Mondays just suck, don’t they? Going back to work, going back to school, coming back from a vacation. but I really think this Monday is going to be kind of great.

Cath and I do have to go to our respective jobs, but post-work there are some delightful going-ons, which will make the first nine hours of Monday much more palatable.

1) Meeting author Mary Kay Andrews for a launch party for her new book at Feast Restaurant in Decatur! And you guys can come too! We got our tickets here, but I they will be some at the door too!

2) MISO IZAKAYA! I promise you that deserves all caps and an exclamation point because Cath and I eat here about twice a week. Chloe of Chow Down Atlanta (and awesome shooting teacher) introduced us a few weeks ago, and we are sooo addicted. And tomorrow the amazing chef/owner Guy Wong is rolling out new additions to the already out-of-this-world menu! Seriously you guys, when you visit us, this is the first place we’ll take you!

What about you, wonderful readers? How’s your Monday shaping up? Come join us if you can at Feast and Miso. I swear it will make your Monday magical!

Anything You Wanna Know About Us?

Hiya Lovelies!

So I updated our About Us page. I figured it was time (4 years and counting). Also, we figured if Mr. Sartorialist himself didn’t know what “Cajun” meant, others might wonder too. Add the “Asian” in front of the “Cajun” and then you’ve got people really confused.

I’m not sure if anyone actually checks out our “About Us” page, but if you do/did, are there other things we haven’t answered? Seriously, ask away! We’ll do a post with some of the questions and answers, and post all of the Q and A up on our “About Us” page – flesh it out a bit.

In the meantime, here’s a collage of weekend pics to keep your eyes occupied while you think of some questions:

Surprise Engagement Party!

Two weeks ago my friend, Lena, and I threw a surprise engagement party for Lar and Matt. We tricked them into thinking they were coming to Lena’s housewarming party. Little did they know. . . . .

This was the first time I ever got to throw a surprise party for Lar and it was so much fun. She had no idea and couldn’t believe that I kept the secret for so long. It’s definitely not easy keeping a secret from your twin sister!

Before the party, I took two photos of Matt and Lar and had them blown up at Kinkos. Then I printed out some paper rings and mustaches so everyone could play Pin the Ring on Lar and Pin the ‘stache on Matt.

We also set up a photobooth using my Mac and some dollar store props. It wasn’t until the end of the night that I realized Lar and Matt didn’t make it over to the photo booth together. Whoops. Party planning fail.

Not including the photobooth images, our friend Dexin took all the party photos. She’s in the last photobooth row in the red coat above.

The best part about the party was all the delicious food that everyone brought. Lena’s bf made Ritz crackers with Parmesan cheese wrapped in bacon. My friend Meredith made an amazing cake, another friend made Kahlua brownies  and my mom made the best homemade whoopie pies ever! All in all a great night.

And the official countdown is on. Only 13 more days until the wedding! I took some photos of the decorations we’ve been working on and will post those sometime later this week.

Hope all of you have a great start to the week!

“Don’t be a drag, just be a queen”

Mario Testino for Vogue (see source and slide show here)

Sooo I know not everyone is gaga for Gaga like I am, but I feel kind of compelled to blog about her today. Her single “Born this Way” is going to be released tomorrow. I’m usually pretty stoked for any new Gaga anything, but I’m particularly giddy because I already love the lyrics. Elton John has called it our generation’s anthem and the gayest song he’s ever heard. So that’s a lot of hype, I know, but considering the lyrics, I think I’m gonna love it:

Don’t be a drag, just be a queen
Whether you’re broke or evergreen
You’re black, white, beige, chola descent
You’re lebanese, you’re orient
Whether life’s disabilities
Left you outcast, bullied, or teased
Rejoice and love yourself today
‘Cause baby you were born this way

No matter gay, straight, or bi,
Lesbian, transgendered life
I’m on the right track baby
I was born to survive
No matter black, white or beige
Chola or orient made
I’m on the right track baby
I was born to be brave

(Lyrics: Lady Gaga)

If you are wondering why I’m so Gaga obsessed, I think Vogue’s article “explains” her really well. Read it here.

Happy (almost) Friday, little monsters!!!

Holiday Blah-diddy Bloops

www.natlsunshine.com Holiday Blah-diddy Bloops/ noun/ hall-ee-deh blahh-deh-di blew-oops:
1. What happens around the holidays when you are so busy with the fun things (parties, gift-buying) and the not-so-fun things (work deadlines, obligatory holiday todos). You don’t have another free moment until the new year and by then all the warm fuzzy holiday feelings you were planning on savoring have whooshed by.

2. A made-up AsianCajun expression

_________________________

Here are a few things that have been going on in AsianCajun holiday land:

1) We finally met Sheemeka Ayers (aka The Broke Socialite)!!! What a sweetie, and a gorgeous lady to boot. For those of you who aren’t familiar with TBS, she is pretty much the most famous blogger in Atlanta. For reals. What the AsianCajuns are to about 25 people, Sheemeka is for the entire city. She is one inspiring lady.

2) Anddd we met Annette Joseph!!! – the same day we met Sheemeka! It was nearly too much ATL-celebrity for my easily-overwhelmed brain. Annette is the lady when it comes to amazing styling, and yet another person whom I look all googly-eyed at. You might have seen her on Goop (she renovated and decorated Gwyneth P’s pad in Nashville). Cath and I ran into Annette at Sheemeka’s (un)conference Lavish, where Annette showed her adoring fans how to style a room for a photo shoot (read more about it on her blog).

3) We wore victorian Christmas crowns and told stories at the  Chronicle Christmas party. Party-goers paid us to read Christmas stories and do a mini-danced version of the Nutcracker. All the money went to The Wren’s Nest– huzzah!

(Below: this is what happens when you let your storytellers have a few glasses of white wine before storytelling).

4) Receiving the best Christmas card ever from Diane at Snapshot for Fashion. Thank you, Diane! (she even captured my hair poof!)

5) Watching this awesomely inspiring short video about Toys for Tots. Locals, donate here. Non-locals, donate here.

6) Planning some last minute Christmas shopping at Mama’s holiday market this Saturday (p.s. this is not the AsianCajun’s Mama. Mama is a local store that sells all natural body products- made locally). Our favorite local jeweler June Shin will be there! Mama is located right by the best cookie place in the world The Cookie Studio. Might as well kill two birds with one stone this weekend: Christmas shopping and obligatory holiday weight gain. Perfect!

And next week even more madness will descend. So far our Blah-diddy Bloops have been just awesome, but I’m hoping to scrape together a less harried week next week.

How do you guys make sure you don’t just speed through the holiday season? Tell us what you guys are up to too! We know we’re not the only ones running like crazy holiday headless chickens (what?!). Exactly.

How the AsianCajuns Do Outdoorsy

1) Go some place absolutely breathtaking like Cashiers, North Carolina during the fall.

2) Jump for joy (this could be for the clear mountain air, the splashy leaves, or the fact that you are staying in a hotel instead of a tent with stones cushioning your spine).

3) Eat. And eat and eat and eat and eat.

One of our besties from college invited us up to the mountains of North Carolina this past weekend. The leaves are just past their peak this time of the year – so gorgeous! I had visions of hiking up and down hill and dale, surrounded by reds and yellows swirling around. And I swear we did do a bit of that. But what I felt really helped me enjoy nature to the fullest was. the food.

Exhibit A:
Caramel apple (I prefer to brandish them accusingly at passersby before taking the first blissful bite)

(close up: note the sugar on the bottom)

Exhibit B:
Fried (yes fried) Mac and Cheese

Exhibit C:
Gigantic pumpkin cupcake with cream cheese frosting and pipping-hot apple cider.

And that was just what I caught on camera (did not include the pizza, beaucoup cups de cider, and some heavenly macaroons- the coconut kind not the marie antoinette ones). My arteries are crying for help and I feel like I could safely hibernate for at least three months and not starve. Thank gawd bathing-suit season is nine months away- muahahahaha!

Speaking of the great outdoors and food, Cath and I think you locals should attend this shindig:
A fancy schmany dinner on the soon-to-be-completed Atlanta Beltline! Georgia Organics and Parish (one of our favorite restaurants in the city- and Cajun!) are throwing this soiree to give you a preview of the Beltline while you eat some delicious food, sip some wine all in the great outdoors of Atlanta.

It sounds dreamy to us, and if we hadn’t spent so much on cider and cream cheese icing this past weekend, I would have saved for this event.

I imagine it will look like a larger scale of this (see photo below) or that scene in Chocolat where Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp slowly drizzle chocolate on everything while everyone at the table swoons by candlelight. Sounds delicious doesn’t it?

All photos by me except for this last one. You can find it here.

31 Bloggers, 1 LBD

Cath and I are sooo excited! We get to be part of The Society Stylist’s Little Black Dress Experiment! What is that? Well, check out Valerie Elizabeth’s Dress Diaries from last August here. She wore the same Ann Taylor LBD 31 different ways during the month of August.

This year, Valerie Elizabeth and her crew have asked 31 fashion bloggers from around the nation to be part of her experiment. A different blogger wears the Ann Taylor black dress each day during the month of August.

We’re not sure which day Cath and I will be posting in August, but we’ll make sure it will be up on AsianCajuns as well as the Society Stylist. Anddd there will be a way for you guys to enter your own LBD photos and win some goodies! Details forthcoming.

Happy Monday! We hope you all had a lovely weekend and that this day slips by painlessly.

We’re Back!

Thank you all for the sweet comments! Cath and I are safely moved (to our separate apartments), and my pneumonia is slowly but surely ebbing away. Our new branding is still in the works- just a few more tweaks from my code monkey and you’ll see our new site- woohoo!

In the meantime, this has been the AsianCajun world the last two weeks:

We live and die by Scoutmob’s daily local deals (non-locals, Scoutmob is going nationwide- check it out here). Today they featured our favorite jewelry designer June Shin, and she and the witty Scoutmobbers gave a nod to the AsianCajuns. Huzzah!

Saturday: the day of moving. We had six of the most wonderful people help us move- and they got it done in less than seven hours. They even did acrobatics for us (i.e. my bf and friends struggling to take down our long curtains, while I helpfully. take photos):

We’ve been trapped under boxes for the last week, so Cath and I have yet to see the latest S&TC movie. In the meantime we’ve talked about how SJP looks absolutely ravishing in her Halston Heritage– and we wish to gawd we could afford it (and travel to Abu Dhabi).

We’ve been listening to NPR’s The Moth Radio Hour. Our favorite so far? Vogue editor Joan Juliet Buck’s ghost story about her haunted Left Bank palace of an apartment. That’s her below wearing Yves Saint Laurent in the 80s. I’m against smoking, but I kind of want to just so I can keep one hand gloved. Listen to her story here.

This is not super-new news, but we are tres excited that Madewell is finally available on line. Bits and pieces taunted us at Shopbop, but now everything is available without schlepping to the mall. I’m also pleased as punch that they are little more diverse in their model selection. Even though we are supposedly living through an age of salads and melting-pots, the fashion industry (and many others) are still predominantly bland and un-melted.

And last, but not least. the most exciting news for me this past weekend. my bf bought me my first piece of art! As much as I really like shoes and clothes and food, I would give a lot of that up for real art. I am definitely not in the financial position to start collecting- or so I thought (leather platforms and fancy mac & cheese I can afford), but this weekend we stopped by the Decatur Fine Arts Exhibition. I’d been eying this painting for months (I’m the chair person for the show, so I got a little preview), and at $125, my bf swept me off my feet.

What do you guys think? She’s by Mary Pousner, and it’s entitled My Sweet Aberration.

I love her expression and the eyes in the sweet potato (or watermelon).

Is that enough babbling for one night? I hope you guys had a wonderful weekend! I feel like summer has really started. What have you guys been up to? What are your summer plans?! Do tell (I have to live semi-vicariously through you all until my pneumonia is all gone- drat you, lungs!).
