Gallery Wall

Dearest Lar,

It’s soooooo amazing to think that we’re in the SAME country RIGHT NOW and we’ll get to see each other in just a few days – eeeekkkk! I have a whole checklist of things I want to do to the house before you see it in person. It’s about 70 items long and I’ve gotten about 2 things done. One of those things is pizzazz-ing up this wall in my hallway:

Gallery Wall before

You know I love gallery walls – I had one in the teeny hallway of my last house. Unfortunately all of my frames were black. So I spent two sunny weekends (which has been a rare occurrence) spray painting the frames. Then I used newspaper to create a template for each piece.

I wasn’t planning on making the wall so symmetrical. I usually like gallery walls that are a little off kilter, but once I started playing around with the templates, I realized this was the best pattern:

All of the walls in my house are plaster so I have to drill before hammering in the nails to minimize any plaster crumblage (yep, just made up that word).

And tah dah! (Ignore the bare light bulb. Troy and I are saving up for a really cool pendant light)

In just a few days you’ll get to see the wall in person!

I’m going to keep this post short and sweet since I have about 60 other things I need to do around the house before you arrive.

Love you to bits and see you in 3 days!

xoxo, Cath

  1. Looks great, and that niche for the phone! It’s amazing. We have a niche for our phone but it’s not very deep so it was difficult to find a phone that fit. 2 years later it’s still not installed and we have been paying for a landline all this time. FAIL!!

    1. I don’t have a landline – this phone is totally a prop. Although, it would work if I had a phone jack – and a landline – installed. It’s from Pottery Barn years ago and it looks so good there that I don’t mind that it’s not really functional 😉

  2. Looks cray awesome! We did this with family photos on the wall going up our stairs, but I dare say, they’re far less perfectly spaced. Well done!

    1. I’m trying to figure out how to make my phone nook a cell phone charging station, but I’m not that clever.

    1. So cool, right?! There are definitely some drawbacks to buying an old house, but beautiful glass doorknobs is not one of them!

    1. I’ve totally pinned this before and am thinking about doing it. My bf wants a store-bought one, but maybe while we’re saving up for that, I’ll create my own version!

  3. i love it!!! this is something my apartment has been lacking.*sigh*
i’ve been looking for the right pieces to put behind my sofa. actually i have been wanting to put some of my photography on that wall. just don’t know which photos.or if i have to take some new ones. and i’ve been in this apartment with that blank wall for 9 months! UGH!!!

    1. OMG, you totally have to use your photos! What if you did all black and white?! that would be amazing. I’m still so jealous you and Lar got to hang!

  4. I freakin love that phone nook, so much so that I am half inclined to put one in my wall (not quite sure how I’d go about that, but I am sure I can find some youtube how to).
I also love the gallery wall, well done you!

    1. Thanks MichelleK! I love the phone nook! It’s one of those things I didn’t event think about when I bought the house, but now I love it. Ours is built in right next to the linen closet, so maybe you have some room in your hallway. Let me know if you get one put in!

  5. This looks amazing, Cath! So happy for you 🙂 I saw a cool feature on Young House Love awhile back that had a neat way to put up gallery walls. You lay down a big piece of parchment paper on floor, arrange all your gallery pieces how you want, outline them and mark where their hanging nails will be, and tape the paper to the wall. From there, you nail through the holes you marked on the paper, take the paper off, and your hanging nails are ready! I haven’t tried it yet but it sounds nifty. Have a wonderful weekend! <3

    1. I almost did that, but I didn’t have enough big paper. I was being kind of lazy. If I do another gallery wall, I’ll get some large parchment paper and try that technique. Love Young House Love!
