Our Childhood Beach Condo

As promised in the previous post, below are a number of photos from the condo Lar and I grew up going to every summer at Ocean City. I love the place. My dad, along with one of sisters and his brother, purchased the place in the 1970s, decorated it and took such good care of it that hardly anything has changed – or needed changing.

The bumper pool table is the first thing you see when you walk in the front door. And yes, that is plaid kitchen wallpaper in the background.

Most of the condo is covered in faux wood paneling and an amazing yellow and white shag carpet.

The sliding glass doors in the living room behind me open up onto a large balcony.

Here’s a closer look at the kitchen wallpaper, the avocado stove and yellow counter tops.

Apologies for not tidying up before taking this photo, but it’s the only one of the living room that shows off the orange arm chairs. The TV isn’t original to the place, but it gets as few channels as its predecessor.

I love this photo of the stereo and box of pastels. When we were young my dad would always tune the radio to the oldies station. I still always think  of the beach condo when I hear Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye and Aaron Neville. The pastels are my mom’s. She always had us doing fun art projects even on vacation.

With only a couple of fuzzy channels on the TV, my bf and I played A LOT of card and board games on the one day it rained during our stay. Although the box seems to be missing, the monopoly game is mostly intact and so old that the houses and hotels are actually made out of wood – not plastic!

The beach condo has always had a hodge podge of sheets for all the beds. There are exactly four different sets of sheets represented on this queen-sized bed – not to mention the retro bedspread!

The guest bathroom is covered in this fantastic floral wallpaper. They just don’t make wallpaper like that anymore.

I think even the designers at Ikea would find the guest bedroom room inspirational. I was so tempted to take the lamp home with me.

My trip to the beach last week was the first time I stayed at the condo in nine years and as close minded as it sounds, it was so nice to see that not much had changed. I’ll be completely heartbroken if the shag carpet, orange arm chairs, bumper pool table, daisy wallpaper and stereo are ever replaced.

  1. Love the retro wallpaper ! BTW, thanks so much for the comments and checking out my blog. You girls have been looking at my blog almost since day 1.

  2. Walking in must be like getting transported back in time! I love the condo! I chuckled when I saw the wallpaper because it reminds me of my childhood home, where every room *had* to have some crazy-detailed colorful nutty wallpaper. Why did people think that was a good idea back then? It makes do-it-yourself renovation a pain. I’d rather paint over a bad paint job than spend a week scraping old wallpaper. As always, love your posts. The photography is simply amazing.

  3. hello darling. hope your weekend has been sweLL.thanks for sharing these photos. feels like i was there-almost. looks like a real sweet place!
i wish i had a beach condo too! and i badly wanna go to the us. where is ocean city? i love boardgames too, so much fun

  4. Love this post!!! For five summer straight, my family use to rent a townhouse in Ocean City, MD so I can totally relate to this. It was always so much fun. I’m going to have to make a visit there this summer and see the changes! 🙂

  5. Hi,
Do you accept advertising on your site? If so, please get back to me with rates info.
    Thanks.

  6. This place is incredible!! I love that everything is still in its original glory. The carpet, the wallpaper, everything. And that lamp & stripe art are so cool, I probably would have taken them, too!

  7. I can’t believe a place this perfect exists. If this place ever gets sold, you need to knock down the walls with that amazing wallpaper and take them with you. And the entire kitchen while you’re at it.

  8. How fun! You could shoot a movie based in the 70’s there! I love the retro decor. very neato. 🙂 I know, that was so cheesy.

Since Mel and I went to school at UMD and our college friends grew up going to Ocean City, we spent a week there during college in the summer. I have a close friend who lives in Salisbury now too. Such a small world!

    xo, becs

  9. fan of the blog for a long time. this is so worthy of a first comment, the place is marvelous! makes me doubly bitter about the remodeling of a beloved family cottage

  10. Love love love it! I know how warm and fuzzy places like that can make you feel – SO much better than some cold, fancy hotel, eh. I can almost feel the memories from the photos 🙂 looks like it would be fun and cozy, even on a rainy day!

  11. Wowie! Blast from the past but in a good way of course! I love your beach condo it’s totally retro and completely amazing! I wouldn’t have changed a thing either. what a fun place to spend summery days and nights!!

Hope you ladies are having a fabulous Thursday!! Yipeee.

    xx Love & Aloha

  12. oh man this is awesome!! I used to live in a Downtown Las Vegas home with a very similar vibe, we tried to decorate it in the same style too. Gotta love vintage homes!

  13. Ah! All soo good. We also grew up going to the sane cottage every year. The cottage is now torn down and replaced with something new and modern I’m sure but it’s not as good to me, if I don’t hear the wind rattling the wood panelling.

  14. I love this! Its kinda old and dingy looking in the absolute best way possible. I mean THAT WALLPAPER. I kind of want to live there.
