Nowadays it’s pretty easy and not uncommon to break the classic fashion rules (i.e. no white after Labor Day, no tights with open-toed shoes, don’t mix black with navy blue or brown, don’t mix patterns). Lauren and I frequently break the no navy blue with black rule. For some reason the tones of black with dark blue seem to work and I have no qualms wearing them side by side:

H&M navy blue wrap dress, Ann Taylor shrug, Nine West sandals.
I wore this outfit to work the other day since I needed to wear practical shoes, which in my case just means a shoe without a heel. Nothing goes better with navy blue than khaki and gold.

I layered these two necklaces all the time. They’re perfect complimentary lengths. I just wish I had two like these in silver. Another classic fashion rule is to take one accessory off before leaving the house. I do the reverse and usually end up with better results.

September 10th, 2009 at 6:42 amThe thing too about breaking classic fashion rules is doing so with aplomb: as evidenced in these pics. The rules exist to keep folks who don’t give much thought to fashion some easy to remember guidelines. The thinking woman’s fashionista gets to do as she pleases.

September 10th, 2009 at 8:29 amKitCath, you know why we were navy and black together? Because Holly Golightly wears that black dress and navy blue hat when she goes to Sing-Sing- and Audrey/Holly can do no wrong
You look gorgeous![Reply]

September 10th, 2009 at 11:08 amIs it bad that I didn’t know black and navy weren’t supposed to go together? And I thought layers of necklaces and jewelry were a girl’s birthright….
ps. those warrior shoes are pretty comfy, although they don’t have much in the way of arch support, but for like 8 dollars, I can’t really complain. If you guys want a pair, let me know, it’s easy enough to send them out…

September 10th, 2009 at 12:08 pmI love breaking all the rules. It sort of reminds me of the title of that book for managing work and people: “First, Break All the Rules.” I think that mantra can really apply to anything.
If it doesn’t look right, it doesn’t look right.
Thankfully, it DOES look very right. To hell with antiquated fashion rules created by snooty old men from Europe and women who believed the female’s place was in the home or as an accessory on the arm of a well-dressed man.
I love the gold layered necklaces. It’s not overdone, so the “take off one accessory rule” does not apply here.
Love! Great post to come back to the blogosphere to.
