One Blazer, Two Ways, Kind Of

cathstyle_logo_rev

So while Lar and I were in NOLA I did what all the locals do and went shopping at Urban Outfitters. I know, I know, it’s shameful to go to a chain store when you’re traveling, but in this case I’m so glad I did because I found the best blazer on the sales rack. It’s a thin, silk, double breasted, black blazer with slim-cut arms. I love how it makes every outfit look pulled together. Since it has been a little chilly in Atlanta, I’ve been wearing it with everything.

The necklace I’m wearing is one I bought for Lauren on our birthday from a local salon. It’s a mix of silver, gray and black chains hooked together.

Exhibit B:

It’s no Brooks Brother suit, but I think this blazer is pretty alright. I’m sure I’ll wear it out before the season is over.

Goodbye Summer!

cathstyle_logo_rev

So I finally got around to adding a few photos under the Cath Style page. The images are from a weekend trip I took to Savannah with my bf in the summer, which is fitting because I think, given the weather this week, the long Atlanta summer is officially over. Today was rainy and chilly. I got completely soaked wearing opened-toed heels and a skirt. I need to follow Lar’s example and start unpacking my winter clothes.

cathstyle_savannah

I’ll try to remember to update the Cath Style page more often and get Lar to do the same.

PS: Lar and I just went to see Bright Star tonight. For those of you who love the regency era, period films, Keats, poetry, beautiful scenery, attention to detail and/or brilliant acting, go see this film!

Tough Call: Esperanza vs The Process

logo_aroundatl

For those of you who have been loyally following us for a while (we love you!), you know that we’re big fans of the two Atlanta apparel/design groups known as Esperanza and The Process/Epidemik Coalition (evidence here, here, here, here, here, here and here). So we’re a little doubtful that one is going to triumph over the other at this Thursday’s Graveyard Tavern shindig when they go head to head in a number of bar-related challenges. Nevertheless, there’s no doubt that it’ll be entertaining! And of course the Esperanza and Process guys can’t have an event without an awesome tee. This Thursday they will be showing off a special new collaboration tee. Esperanza and Process unite!!

What is the point of duking it out, you ask? To warm-up for Esperanza and Process’ Hawks Season Opener block party on the 28th. One ticket to the party will get you a center-court seat, pregame tailgate, Chick-Fil-A meal, courtside access for pregame warm-ups, and a gift bag.

hawks

Lar and I don’t know much about sports (I actually had to double check that the Hawks were the basketball team while writing this post), but even I’m tempted by the tailgating, gift bags and all around fun that’s guaranteed when these two companies host a party.

See you at The Graveyard this week and buy your block party tickets here. May the best t-shirt/graphic design team win/tie!

White After Labor Day

cathstyle_logo_rev

First off, thank you to everyone that wrote such kind words in response to the previous post. The comments made being almost mentioned in WWD even that much better!

Now, on to more pressing matters. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m not one to follow cliched fashion rules so I didn’t think twice about building an outfit around my white blazer. Of course once I looked into the mirror after dressing, the white shirt and white blazer seemed a bit too bright for October.

Enter the gradient scarf! The white-to-cream-to-gray-to-cream-to-white of the scarf broke up the whiteness of the outfit enough to make it work-appropriate and post Labor Day appropriate – for those who care about that sort of thing.

Shirt and skirt from Asos, H&M blazer and scarf, BCBG pumps.

I wear these black patent pumps to work all the time. They’re nearly impossible to walk in, but I love the height of the heel and the overall versatility of the shoe. They’re by BCBG, but I got them at TJ Maxx at while ago for $35. FTW!

Yes! We Kind of Get Mentioned on WWD!

A big thank you to Julia at Moxsie! She let us know that Moxsie’s CEO recently alluded to us AsianCajuns in an interview with WWD:

“You have to look at it as a changing landscape. Five years ago, two sisters in Atlanta wouldn’t have a blog that 150 people comment on. These are all new things.”

“Two sisters in Atlanta” – that’s us! Okay, okay. I know it’s not a direct reference to AsianCajuns, but Lar and I are still chuffed!

Me and my big toothy grin at The Court of Two Sisters.

I haven’t had the same luck as Lar with my hair down here. The humidity makes it one giant frizzball and it’s so muggy I can only stand to wear my hair down for about 5 minutes. So a summer dress and my hair up in a ponytail has become my NOLA uniform.

We’ll be posting some more photos from New Orleans shortly, but I have to keep this post short since I promised everyone I’d meet up with them for some bookstore shopping this morning.

Alice + Olivia, F. Scott + Zelda

cathstyle_logo_rev

On our drive down to New Orleans today, we took our lunch break in Montgomery, AL and stopped by the F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald house museum. I had no idea the couple lived in Montgomery, but apparently they did – in a lovely, large, upper-middle class house. More on the museum in a later post. This post is about something more frivolous: boots!

A few weeks ago I found these Alice and Olivia for Payless boots online. I tried to refrain and even held off from buying them for two whole days, but finally gave in. Afterall, I do need some new boots for the fall/winter.

I didn’t really intend to bring them with me on our NOLA trip, but right before we left Lar said it’s suppose to be rainy all week. And there’s nothing better than a pair of boots to help you stay dry. So I paired my brand new boots with an outfit that I originally intended to wear with sandals. It looks a little Marc Jacobs for Perry Ellis/Doc Martens-esque, but I was willing to try a non-me look for a day that was spent mostly in a car.

Miss Selfridge dress, UO bag, Alice + Olivia for Payless boots, leather cuff borrowed from my bf.

I don’t have a good photo of it, but the soles of these boots are bright pink. Pretty sweet, no?

Stay tuned for more posts of our travels around NOLA!

Black + Navy + Khaki =

cathstyle_logo_rev

Nowadays it’s pretty easy and not uncommon to break the classic fashion rules (i.e. no white after Labor Day, no tights with open-toed shoes, don’t mix black with navy blue or brown, don’t mix patterns). Lauren and I frequently break the no navy blue with black rule. For some reason the tones of black with dark blue seem to work and I have no qualms wearing them side by side:

H&M navy blue wrap dress, Ann Taylor shrug, Nine West sandals.

I wore this outfit to work the other day since I needed to wear practical shoes, which in my case just means a shoe without a heel. Nothing goes better with navy blue than khaki and gold.

I layered these two necklaces all the time. They’re perfect complimentary lengths. I just wish I had two like these in silver. Another classic fashion rule is to take one accessory off before leaving the house. I do the reverse and usually end up with better results.

Let the Weekend Begin! Decatur Book Festival Fashion:

logo_aroundatl

Book Festival fashion is a tricky thing – especially if you’re working at the festival. Those millions of cute outfits you see at Glastonbury really aren’t practical when you know you’ll be running around in the Atlanta heat for 12+ hours. So what’s the solution? I usually end up wearing my festival tee, shorts and my TOMS – it’s not revolutionary, but it’s stylish and comfortable. However, this year I’ve already been out-book-festival-fashioned by Daren Wang, the executive director himself:

daren_dbfoutfit

This is the perfect book fest wear: backpack (for festival programs, business cards, iphone, radio etc.), nametag, festival t-shirt, khaki’s and, the best, most covetable shoes ever!

daren_shoes

Sol Design sent these over to Daren – red Chuck Taylors with bookzilla (see previous post) on them!! I can’t repress my jealousy – I want a pair of my own.

Attack of the Decatur Book Festival

logo_aroundatl

So we AsianCajuns have mentioned the AJC Decatur Book Festival quite a few times over the years. Namely here, here, here, here and here. Needless to say, we’re big fans of the Labor Day weekend event and this year is going to be bigger and better than ever.

Lots of fun, new stuff going on including the following 2009 book festival creatures (developed by the uber creative peeps at Lenz Marketing):

Click on the image to enlarge.

dbfcreatures_430

L to R: Bookzilla, Mighty Carl Jung, Read-an, me (not a book fest creature), Bookwurm and Authora.

Other festival highlights include Sir Harold Evans as the keynote, over 150 authors, a dedicated teen venue, pickled okra contest, a mariachi brunch, a dance about verbs and adverbs, an author wrestling  legendary professional wrestler Abdullah the Butcher and a Eudora Welty tribute performed by Mary Chapin Carpenter, Caroline Herring, Kate Campbell and Claire Holley.

Plus, plus! we’ll be tweeting about all these events throughout the weekend and hanging out, posting posts at the Decatur Book Festival blogger tent on Saturday from 11 to noon and 2 to 3 p.m. So for you non-Atlantans, you can still feel like you’re at the book festival by staying posted to AsianCajuns. Word.
