News Alert: Scotland is Sunny and Warm (briefly!)

Dear Cath,

You’re back from Denver! Woohoo! That means we can have skype chats again and you can rest your tired high-altituded body. While you were wedding-ing and hiking, Matt and I did our usual weekend ambling. Oh and, non sequitur, this is that thrifted dress I told you about:

It wasn’t quite warm enough to wear it on Saturday. I’d much prefer to pair it sans leggings with my gray booties, but instead wore it like this:

Vintage scarf from Stefan’s Vintage in Atlanta • Madewell jacket • thrifted dress • Target leggings • Hunter Boots • Dune wedge ballerinas (above photo)

Wearing a spring dress in 40 degree weather can be a little bit of a challenge, but guess what?! Today (Tuesday) it is actually like for real, for realzzz warm here! It’s gorgeous and sunny and I can smell the grass! I forgot how you can smell earthy smells so well when it’s warm. Edinburgh usual has very little scent except for the occasional yeasty whiff of brewery.

But back to Saturday. after our usual green smoothie breakfast (we add more fruit on the weekends — living life on the edge!), I was pretty grumpy from all the rain and the cold and the cold and the rain. So I begged persuaded Matt that we should go explore the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. I’ve been reading this book on the Bloomsbury group and really wanted to go ogle some daubs of paint.

Did you ever go when you were a student? I went once, but I remember being by myself (no Cath!), walking all the way from Bruntsfield to Dean Village. The two gallery buildings are these stately stone megaliths sitting on rolling green lawn. Not at all “modern” but I like that you can pretend you are going to your friend’s manor home for a spot of tea (with a side of Picasso prints) when you see them.

I couldn’t take any photos inside, but I took a few on the grounds (pessimistic though they are):

And the bathroom:

This piece below makes me think of what would happen if Donald Judd designed a carnival mirrored fun house:

I really liked this guy because he appears to be stoically guarding the gallery entrance — not that he has much say in the matter, what with the cement and all. I wonder if the Lego nipples allow him to do his job unflinchingly. Tough gig.

On the way back from our arty adventure, we stopped at Vietnam House for pho to go. Seriously, their vegetarian pho is amazing and incredible — even if it’s “hot” when you get here in August, we’ll have to get some.

Okay, now tell us all about your outdoorsy Colorado adventures!

See you on skype soooon!

xoxoxoxox,

Lar

  1. i LOVE LOVE LOVE that dress! so cute!
and thanks for that smoothie idea. i wouldn’t have thought to mix red raspberries and cucumbers. i might have to do that tomorrow.i have red raspberries at home 🙂

    1. Ooo yes do add them, Diane! We also put in a bunch of spinach, a bit of water, and some OJ. It’s our decadent version of our green juice (kale, cucumber, celery, apple).

      1. yeah i dunno. i love veggies. but veggie juice weirds me out! i do like carrot juice when it is mixed with orange and apple and whatnot.so i will try cucumber. but if i don’t like it you’ll be hearing it from me! 😛

        1. Hehehe! Hope you like it, Diane 😉 It took us a bit to work up to the mostly veggie juice and smoothie. When I have a full-on fruit smoothie now, I feel like I’m having dessert!

  2. Dear Lar, That dress is perfect! What a find! And I seriously love the ballet slippers. Is it warm enough today to wear them? I have a feeling you’ll be wearing a lot of tights with those this fall.

I remember going to the modern art gallery, but can’t remember if we went together. I remember loving the surrounding area and I remember that swirly thing in the front. Let’s go back together and go get pho afterwards. My tum is grumbling just thinking about it!

    xoxo, cath

  3. Can I say I love the dress (even with the leggings)? Also, the pho looks good–although I’ve never had it. I’m attracted to beautiful things, so you know I appreciated the pics of the bathroom. The gallery is also quite cool looking as well.

  4. I am suffering pho envy. As Lemmon would say via 30 Rock, “I want me some of that.” No veg only pho in my area, c’est la gere-or something like that.
Love the dress also, but not in that where’s-your-troosers-Donald-kinda-way, just in that kinda “Yay Spring” kinda way.
    Great post.

    1. When you come back, Bunkie, we will eat at Vietnam House lots n lots — it’s gluten free too woohoo!
And one of these days I’ll get something Donaldy — though I’m not sure I look as good in tartan as he does.

  5. Lar, that Lego nipple man is creepy cool! And the photo of your skirt with Lego man is just so artsy! I wish I were artsy.

GAH I have to confess, I am sooo jelly of your cooler weather because I personally LOVE wearing my dresses/skirts with leggings or tights. And your outfit is totes swoon-worthy! What else is NOT swoon-worthy in this post? I NEED Pho stat.

  6. Lar, that thrifted dress is too cute for words. Looks like you had a fab time at the gallery. Don’t you just love art. I sure do!! 🙂

  7. Love the dress!! And the lego nipples. 🙂 So I was just looking at dailymail, and they make it seem like there’s a heatwave going on!! Can you wear your dress now, with the tights?!?!?

      1. Hahha! Guess what, CL! I did wear a skirt TODAY without tights! You are sooo right! Heat wave indeed! It’s got to be close to the mid-70s here — I feel like I’ve been transplanted to a different dimension. Scotland hot? Scotland and bare legs? Scotland and a mini-tan (aka slightly-less-white-ish)? Everyone is out on the Meadows, some even in bikinis. It’s gone to everyone’s head!
Hope you are having equally bizarre weather in Atlanta (i.e. hot but with a breeze and no humidity).
        xoxoxo,
        Lar
