I Left My Heart in San Francisco

Last week, post royal wedding bash, I went to San Francisco to visit my boyfriend husband. He’s out at Stanford setting up his worm machine. Really. A worm sorter, technically speaking. Well, two weeks later, I’ve been back on the east coast all grumps because he’s still out there and doesn’t get back until the end of the week. Harumph! Apparently worm sorter machine set-up is trickier than you’d imagine (if you are in fact imagining such a thing).

We did have five lovely days together- my first in California! Once I got the public transportation down (Caltrain, Bart, and most confusingly the Muni), San Francisco and I became great friends, just as I knew we always would.

Helloooo delicious foods:

Spotted one of my favorite pieces at the SFMoMA! It’s called Lick and Lather (chocolate and soap self-portrait busts that the artist ate and washed with, respectively):

Our hotel in Palo Alto had an old telephone booth in it. I had to sit in it and pretend I was (a less chic) Audrey Hepburn in “Charade.”

Matt and I might be moving out west in the not-too distant future, and I loved my first glimpse of California. Next month is my first ever visit to L.A. and I’m tres excited, though I expect to feel a little fish-out-of-water-y. I think in my case you can take the girl out of the east coast, but you can’t take the east coast out of the girl (certainly not after 27 years of indelible Atlantic winds making their mark, huh?).

  1. Oh, San Francisco! I do love my hometown, though I agree that the MUNI is super confusing and annoying (I usually stick to buses/BART, or just walking a lot). But at least you don’t need a car to get around, unlike LA. Though I myself prefer the east coast/New England (blasphemy from a Cali girl, I know), living out west for at least a few years is an awesome experience!

  2. I Love that art piece! These are great photos! I have always felt that I belong in California. I am not sure why though.

  3. Yay for SF! You know you want to be out here.I want you guys out here! I promise I make a great shopping partner πŸ™‚

    1. What lab is your sister in?! Maybe my hubs has worked with her these past few weeks! I hope you are having an equally delightful time over there, Haya!!!

      1. she is at the spud lab at the medical centre. doubt paths would have crossed as she probably would i have mentioned it since i am pretty sure she was still around when the cranes were at acs, though i could be wrong. but still what a small world!!

now that she is done with school i plan to visit way more often. i think today we are going to a place called lands end overlooking the ocean. sign me up! ocean and mountains >>>> lake ontario and no mountains. πŸ˜‰

  4. Surfed over to your blog via the Already Pretty blogroll. It looks like we must be neighbors (I work in Decatur)! Love your San Francisco pics. I went there for the first time in 2009 and look forward to going back. Bookmarking your blog now!

    1. Woohoo! We love “meeting” other locals, Stacy! If you work downtown we should all get together for lunch some time soon! Thanks so much for bookmarking us! I’m going to check out your blog asap πŸ˜‰

  5. I love SF too and have visited multiple times! Glad to hear that you enjoyed it too. I see you went to Tartine! Wasn’t it amazing? I love eating there when I’m in SF! Hope you had the chance to explore the mission district too! I’m sure you’ll love SF when you move there – the thrift store shopping is great!

    1. Oooo I so hope we end up in SF, Twixy. It’s possible we might be LA. OH, and YES! Tartine is heaven. I dream about the pain au chocolat I had there!

  6. You were in my neck of the woods, eh? There’s so much to see and do, and it looks like you experienced a great deal of things in such a short amount of time! Tartine is TO DIE! Hope you’re basking in newlywed bliss, and that your upcoming trip to LA is amazing. πŸ™‚

  7. I went to college for 2.5 years in Napa Valley, just an hour north of SF. I went to SF at least every other weekend, and I miss it so much. I wasn’t even of the legal drinking age when I lived there, and now I want to go back so bad.

If you guys move to California, I’ll be able to visit you when I move out to Hawaii!!

    So exciting.

I have never ridden Bart or Muni. I want to try it.

    Mae Lu @ thereafterish.!

  8. San Francisco is awesome! Did you visit the East Bay at all? There’s some fantastic dim sum places there. If you move out to SF, we’ll have to do lunch. I’m out here in the Bay Area for day-job-work. =D

  9. great photos. and SF is a great city. just too windy for me. i wanna hear more about the worm sorting machine. sounds very interesting.

  10. Hi there!! Hope you gals are very well, it sounds like you’re both having a wonderful time and San Francisco looks amazing too! xx

  11. I’m in the opposite boat as you. I’m a born and bread California girl who is moving to the East Coast (NY) in the not-so-distant future (end of summer) for grad school. Talk about fish out of the water! The bay area is a great place to be- my best friend has lived there for the last 5 years- and I recognize the first picture as Alamo Square Park right in front of the Painted Ladies aka the “Full House” house on Steiner St. πŸ˜‰

  12. I LOVE San Francisco – my fave california city for sure. the food and the arts are amazing there. I hope you get to move there one day

  13. Lar,
you will LOVE LA. I have said all my life that I am an NYC girl through and through. and then. i met LA.
    it’s beautiful.
you will never want to leave.
and you will want to buy everything people are wearing off their bodies.
i left refreshed, inspired, and regretful that i hadn’t been to LA sooner. it really is amazing. πŸ™‚

  14. when you visit LA, you’re more than welcome to hit me up. I discovered your website from my good friend, Corey who runs the2econdfloor.com. I feel as if we’re virtual friends, but it’s kind of a one sided relationship (me stalking you). I grew up in Decatur until I left over 3 years ago. I go back about 6 times a year and at times miss it like crazy!!! I live in Santa Monica, which I declare the sane part of LA. I’d be more than happy to give you the “real” LA tour.

    1. Hi January!

Thanks so much for blog “stalking” us, January! I still have yet to buy my plane ticket for LA, but I’ll be sure to let you know when I’ll be in town! And let us know when you are next in Decatur!

      xoxo,
      Lar
