Because we are Scot-o-philes.

Cath and I have repeatedly babbled alluded to our love of Scotland in previous posts. We don’t even have a drop of Scottish blood in us (Irish, English, French, Danish, German, Chinese but no Scottish). Our Scot-o-phile-ness stems from living/studying in Edinburgh and traveling around Scotland for six months back in 2004.

We haven’t been back for โ€“ eesh! โ€“ six years, but Cath and I always say we would move there in a heartbeat given the opportunity.

One way for us to maintain our connection to our Scottish “roots” is to celebrate Robert Burns Night every January 25. Who is/was Robert Burns, you ask?! Why he was the fellow who wrote “My love is like a red, red rose.” and “Auld Lang Syne”- so in a nutshell he is a famous Scottish poet from the 19th century.

And how does one celebrate Robert Burns Night? By drinking whiskey, eating haggis (it’s really good, I swear!) and attending a (digital) ceilidh (pronounced “kay-lee”). Here we are at the ceilidh doing a traditional Scottish jig in traditional Scottish tartan (click here to see us “dance”!):

Cheesy, we know. We thank you for sticking with us, lovely readers, through our fashion loves and more eccentric tastes.

  1. Oh I don’t mind you both being scot-o-philes at all! My bf is studying in Edinburgh at the moment and I visited and fell in love with beautiful Scotland last summer! I’m excited to go back there again this summer! Though I’ve yet to try a haggis (not sure whether I’ll try it at all) or attend a ceilidh:P Love the tartan by the way!

  2. I have lived in Edimburgh and loved it. Also I was once in a competition about who would eat the most of a haggis (this was in LongBeach on the Scotland Day). OMG! It smells so bad I donยดt think I could have a bite! But I trust you! ๐Ÿ˜‰

    1. I don’t think I would like haggis if i went to a haggis eating competition. That sounds disgusting. I only like haggis with lots of mashed potatoes.

  3. Happy early Robbie Burns Day! I don’t know if they still do this, but a couple of years ago Vancouver had an annual combination Robbie Burns Day/Chinese New Year celebration called Gung Haggis Fat Choy. Think reciting Burns’s poetry and eating your haggis with chopsticks. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  4. hehe, love the wee animation! I live in Edinburgh, but had completely forgotten about Burns Night. I haven’t been to a Burns supper in years!

  5. You two are so freaking cute! I am a big fan of random international holidays, so I am now on a mission to get Joe to celebrate Robert Burns Day with me this year. Luckily he’s a fan of whiskey, so it shouldn’t be too hard.

  6. ive never been to scotland- but ive heard its great, not much for the food as im an vegetarian-hahaha! i think you should go to scotland soon- and then go to sweden too ๐Ÿ™‚ yee! do it! have an great day loves. take care xx

  7. oh gosh you guys are cute! Haha. My friend had a ceilidh at her wedding because she also studies for a bit in Scottland! I thought that was a cool way to incorporate some Scottish-ness into their day!

  8. LOL, look at you in your kilts! I’ve yet to try haggis, but I’m sure I would – we’ve got a Filipino version or sorts so I’m sure I’d be game ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. I think your scotland obsession is kinda adorable. Maybe I shouldn’t resist my urge to buy a kilt whenever they pop up at the thrift store

  11. I think eccentric is what makes you so accessible. If you were totally high fashiony and unattainably creative and high brow label with crazy high fashion photos (a la the beautiful Rumi, Susie Bubble, and etc), it would be hard to feel such a kindred spirit with you two. But your every-day, Everywoman quirks and giddy passions make you easy to relate to and yet still be inspired by!

Plus, I’m eccentric as heck. I wouldn’t love someone who isn’t equally weird as I am. (And you’re both Greenies-A PLUS!)

CATH- IRYC (in response to your comment) @ thereafterish.: Yeah! But I stil feel like working in an office can be mentally/emotionally taxing, so we’re in the Matrix. If we’re mentally tapped, we condition our bodies to make it so. I love that you wake up and snooze to NPR, too. It’s literally on any frequency on any electric receiver that I ever can control. I honestly listen to nothing else on the airwaves. It’s sad but it’s also very informative.

Thanks for the congrats! Five years is a milestone, yep. But come fall, I’ll have been blogging/writing for 8! ๐Ÿ™‚ Hopefully we’ll continue our friendship for many years to come!

  12. PS, that is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen OMG.

Also, meh, you’re both from the UK in your heritage. It works. You can be Scot-o-Philes! Gaelic is Gaelic. LOL. Just don’t talk about haggis, please!
