Winter is slowly creeping into Edinburgh, but luckily we still have a bit of riotous fall color left to keep us from feeling too blue.
The Union Canal starts just a few blocks away from our flat. The canal flows west all the way to Glasgow: 31.5 miles of gorgeous waterway! I just discovered a café boat there this week, so Matteo and I went exploring on Saturday.
Just outside of Harrison Park, you’ll find Zazou Café. A canal boat that serves tea, coffee, hot chocolate and homemade soup. It’s lovely! While you sip your tea and chocolate, the boat gently sways back and forth. Not great for those with vertigo or motion sickness, but very soothing otherwise. We sat next to a sweet old couple that chatted away about hot chocolate and the cafe boat that used to be around before Zazou.
Outfit: thrifted Wrangler flannel • Blank black cords • Frye boots • Kate Spade bag
When you guys come to visit, I’m totally taking you to Zazou!

Dearest Kitcath,
The other day I was wearing that beautiful scarf that Brie made me as a going away prezie, and I realized I was a woman in Scotland wearing a knitted tie ;).
I’m still trying to scope out some independent boutiques and thrift stores for when you get here. So far the style is a bit more cutsey than you and I would wear, but I’ll keep looking.
Miss you muchoooossss!
xoxoxo,
Larbar
looks like such a lovely adventure. i don’t do well with boats though.ehhhh.
If I go to Edinburgh
can I Zazou with you?
I can rhyme every once in a while. 🙂 That cafe looks so darling!

Eeeep! A boat cafe!?!?! I want to go to there! It’s so cool how you’re discovering so many new places that we didn’t even know existed in Edinburgh.
And you know what they say about women and knitted ties. . . 😉
love, cath
Hi, there! I’ve been following you guys for a while now.because I’m from Atlanta, too! I’m living in London now, though, and just wanted to share some enthusiasm for leaving Atlanta and living in a new (UK) place. I miss Atlanta! But somehow I’m so in love with being here, too. If you ever find yourselves in London, I can recommend some fun spots! 🙂
Amaris,
I’m so jealous that you’re living in London! Lar and I love London. What things do you miss about Atlanta? I think I would miss the southern food, the neighborhoods and the weather. We’ll definitely shoot you an email next time we’re planning on going to London – I have a feeling Lar will be there sooner than me 🙂

There’s so much I miss about Atlanta! The Book House, Octane, Java Monkey, Rag-o-Rama! Mmmm, and Sublime Donuts! The neighborhoods definitely. There’s just nothing like walking around Midtown with a dog in the springtime. 🙂 Now I’m so jealous that you’re there & can do all those things! 🙂 Thanks for keeping Atlanta in my day-to-day life, seeing your Atlanta photos makes me so happy! 🙂
Lauren, the Chamber of Commerce (or whatever its equivalent there) should be paying you. I’m betting that by the time you return stateside, you’ll be inducted into the Order of the Thistle.
Which would look very nice on a velvet blazer.
What a quaint little cafe! The soup looks delicious. The scenery looks beautiful!
that little boat cafe is darling cute! the scenery with all the orange and red leaves look very similar to how things look here in vancouver although fall is winding down and winter will be here soon.
aren’t those frye boots just the best? I got mine in cognac and can’t stop wearing them.
oh my! that cafe looks SOOO cute and adorable and yummy!!
I love that flannel shirt and an eating spot on the water sounds amazing. New Orleans used to have a few restaurants at the Lake on piers but hurricane Katrina ruined the last few. Now there’s nothing.
Random note: I just watched Jackson Brodie on PBS and he totally lives in Edinburgh. Between the filming locations and your shots, I might have a new dream destination.
Lunch along the locks. ahhhhh. So charming.

Hi, I like the show Hamish Macbeth and in one episode they referred to “Edie” as “she wears knitted ties”. I live in the US. I have been searching all over the web to find out what “knitted ties” means? Can you please tell me and end the mystery? I have an idea what it means but I may be wrong. Thanks
Hi JA!
I’m so surprised that you stumbled our blog when you were googling this — I never thought for a minute anyone would get this reference but Cath. We also like Hamish Macbeth, but even here in Scotland, I don’t think a lot of people remember it well.
So by “knitted ties” I’m pretty sure they mean that she doesn’t fancy men. I don’t think it’s meant as a double entendre at all — she literally dresses more “manly” by using knitted ties. Cath and I just thought that was a funny and quaint way to refer to it, it’s become an inside joke between us — even thought metaphorically we do not wear knitted ties.
Hope that helps!
HI,
Thanks so much! That’s what I thought too. This is a cool blog by the way.
My ancestors are Scottish highlanders Andrews was MacAndrew before the clearances. I think that puts us in Clan Anderson, with links to Clan McIntyre (MacIntyre?) and also Clan Chattan and maybe linked to a few other . Clan Ross? (you may know better).
