Speaking of Loukoumades.

Maybe we are divided by continents, time zones, cultures, beliefs, but one way you know we are actually all the same? Fried dough. Delicious, aromatic, crispy on outside, pillowy on the inside. every single culture around the world has created some delicious something made of fried dough.

One of the best places to experience this is at Cafe du Monde in New Orleans. It’s a little tourist-trap-y because it’s such an institution (they are open 24/7 except Christmas and “on the day an occasional Hurricane passes too close to New Orleans“), but you have to go for the cafe au lait and the beignets.

Our three orders of beignets.

My cafe au lait. Nom, nom, nom.

The devastation of our table post-beignet devouring and au lait slurping.

There’s also a place in New Orleans called Cafe Beignet that I think makes better beignets (blasphemy, I know!). They are a little over-cooked at Cafe du Monde. Regardless, you have to stop by at least one morning and evening in NOLA (the rest of the mornings and evenings go to Cafe Beignet- and then roll yourself back to your hotel) for the ambience.

Hope you guys are having a good Monday! I need a beignet and cafe au lait right now to combat the drizzly, cold of this Atlanta morning.

  1. Oh I could use some beignets right now.majorly PMSing (sorry TMI) those look scrum-deeli-umptious! It must smell like heaven.
    Happy Monday, Lar! xx
p.s. left you fabulous ladies another award today 🙂

  2. Do you know the funny thing about beignets? Depending on the region you live in, they are not called the same. My mom always call them “merveilles” (means “wonderful thing”) ; that name comes from the north of France and Belgium, where they used to make beignets for carnivals, in February and March.
And in the region of Lyons (you have to go there sometimes, it’s one of the best place to eat in France!), they are called “bugnes”.
Anyway, beignets are always good! I have to try to make some some times!

    1. Ooo that’s so interesting, Celine! And I love how from the north they are called “wonderful things.” Cath and I will come visit you in Paris and then we’ll all go on an eating trip to Lyons! How does that sound? 😉

  3. I love cafe du monde! My husband is from New Orleans. We go all of the time, we only live 45 minuets away! Cafe Degas is my favorite little cafe in New Orleans.
