My Mama was a Hippie

That’s my gorgeous mom circa 1970-something. Note the long flowing hair, grass grazing cotton dress and leather pocket book. The VW beetle in the background is her’s too.

By the time Cath and I were old enough to go scavenging through our mom’s closet, shoulder pads were in (sadly that was roughly twenty years ago and we didn’t have the prescience to hold on to those pre-Balmain geometric shoulders). Gone were the days of Frye boots and suede vests of her hippie years, but a few things sneaked through her closet, and then my closet, in the decades that followed.

Exhibit A: teeny Moroccan-looking coin purse:

I think it coexists beautifully with my UO embroidered vest, but looks a little more Eastern European than George Harrison.

I’m not sure if my mom hung out with any AsianCajun hippies in her day (doubtful to be sure), but I hope I have some of her Howie’s Happy Hippie House (honest to goodness name of a house she lived in) je ne sais quoi. True to recessionista form, everything I’m wearing is not new: Blank jeans from Rockit, A&E boots (4+ years old), UO top and vest, purse via Jacquelyn’s closet.

Oh and a huge thank you to the beautiful Sher at Beneath The Crystal Stars for this lovely award! Let the 10 random facts commence:

1. I’ve had a crush on Hugh Laurie since his Jeeves and Wooster days.

2. Before our communal ballerina dream, Catherine wanted to be an astronaut and I wanted to. wear glasses (I punched out the lenses of magenta sunglasses and wore them around the house). Shortly after the magenta frames DIY, I did have to get actual glasses and now can’t see a thing without contacts- oh the irony!

3. I consider watching Sister Wendy talk about art a spiritual experience. Watch the Bill Moyer’s interview here.

4. I read three to four books at one time and finish one of those four 50% of the time: I am a promiscuous reader.

5. I’m currently reading a biography about the intrepid Beryl Markham, a few spiritual books, and Water for Elephants.

6. I rarely finish nonfiction books, so it looks like this roundΒ Water for Elephants will triumph- possibly.

7. I’m a little book-centric at the moment because I’m excited about this weekend’s Decatur Book Festival (the largest book festival in the South East. Book worms unite! Huzzah!).

8. Cath and I can’t tell each other apart in pictures where we are five years old or younger. I’m guessing I’m sporting the uneven socks- intentional of course, and Cath has her eyes closed. Cath, any guesses?

9. In 2010 I will travel to at least two new continents.

10. Hillary Clinton was the speaker at my graduation from college. I shook her hand before I received my diploma!

I’m supposed to pass this award a long to 10 other bloggers, but I hate having to choose amongst so many wonderful blogs. Whoever hasn’t yet given 10 random facts about themselves, please feel free to leave at least one in the comments section. We love reading those!

  1. Water for Elephants is great! You’ll be able to finish it.

I’m guessing Lauren on the left and Catherine on the right. Am I right? πŸ™‚

  2. What about Hugh Laurie in his small role in “Sense and Sensibility?” Even in the ten lines he had, he was able to convey such incredible sarcasm.

Maybe luck will have us run into each other at the DBF?

  3. Oh your mom looks so gorgeous in her white flowing dress and long hair. My mom gave away most of her old stuff save one or two dresses which pretty much look like nightgowns, they were so long!! Thanks for doing the 10 random facts ( I love the pic of 5 yr old you and Cath, so cute I could pinch both your cheeks!) and also for all your sweet comments, I always look forward to reading your comments:)

p.s. I’m such a book worm too! Yay!! Maybe you can recommend good reads on the blog:)

  7. I love the pic of your mom and puppies! Not surprising to see where you two get your great sense of style πŸ™‚

Water for Elephants is awesome – one of my favorite books that I’ve read this year. I’m pulling for it to be your winner.

If only you had your magenta glasses on it the picture – it’d be so easy! Such a cute pic *awww*!

  8. I am also in love with Hugh Laurie, but I will admit.its because of “House”. A smart ass genius with hilarious one liners, a mature look and striking blue eyes? SWOON! P.S. Did you notice him on friends when Rachel tries to get to Ross’s wedding? She was sitting beside him bugging him.

  9. So THAT’S where you get your haute looks πŸ™‚ Your mom was a total babe!!

One random fact about myself: hmm. My sister and I used to bite our Cabbage Patch Kids on the arm. That was a sign of affection. Or some other Freudian analysis. You figure that out πŸ™‚

I left YOU another award on my blog. You girls are so stylish!

  10. Combining 2 of my celebrity crushes is “A Bit of Fry and Laurie” Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie–British comedy heaven! I think you can find it on You Tube.

  11. That picture of your mom is so poetic!! I love the coin purse and it’s so cool to learn all these interesting facts about you! You and Cath looks so cute together in matching outfits!! I love to read too but I find myself reading blogs more these days! xxoxoox

  12. I love both old pictures. Your mother is beautiful, she lets of such a serene vibe. And you two are just so cute! I’d say the one on the left is Lauren? Where are you planning to travel?

  13. Love this post!!! Especially the old pictures!!! You two are sooo cute!!! And make sure to take lots of pics of the two new continents you travel to!

  14. I LOVE your new site, the new look, the new sub-banners. AND how fun to see your mom and your adorable childhood pix! I am in love with your main banner and the two of you looking at each other — amazing shot. Kudos.

  15. Egadsss you ladies are so cute in that bottom photo! I am with you on being a promiscouous reader ( I spelt that wrong. I just know it). And also with Hugh Laurie. Did you ever watch him in Blackadder? I prefer him in House – bit rough, 5 oclock shadow, blue eyes. Hahaha.

  16. I love hearing random facts. My sister still resents not having to wear glasses. But she got braces, so I guess it worked out for her.

ps. I don’t really know how long I’ll be here-I can stay up to 90 days, but it probably won’t be that long. Which two continents for you?

  17. My mom was a hippie too, but unfortunately she’s the kind of person who actually throws stuff out, so I never got to ransack her wardrobe for any flowy bell-bottomed items. Although my mom’s tiny anway, so even the Balmainesque shoulder-padded jackets she had wouldn’t fit me. Loved reading the 10 random facts. Dying to know now which continents you plan on visiting next year πŸ™‚

Oh and the pic of you and Cath is adorable! Whoever’s on the left has a really smug grin and must have been up to something πŸ˜‰

  18. Fun post Lar! That picture of your mom is fabulous and I love the coin purse. It goes perfectly with your outfit. And that’s such a cute pic of you and Cath. Mel and I are the same way when we look through old photo albums. But since we’re fraternal, we can identify eachother easier.

    xo, Becs

  19. I have missed you ladies so!

It’s because I’ve been a poop and forgot to update your url in my Google Reader. I no like miss you guys again!

  20. Can’t get over that cute childhood photo. What look to be big fairy bows in your hair is too cute. I’ve always hoped I’d be blessed with twins when the babies finally make it into my life with S, hope they’re as cute and as close to each other as you two.

I also love the photo of your mom. I see great style is in your DNA πŸ™‚

Loved learning more about you. Oh and picturing #2 made me laugh. I wanted to don them too when I was younger (now have to as well) but my DIY was a little more “ghetto”.I used paper and toothpicks.

  21. Hey! Did y’all go to agnes scott? I noticed in you said hilary clinton spoke at your graduation. I looked it up and i noticed she was the commencement speaker at Agnes. I am a first year this year! I am almost certain yall came here? Where did yall stay your first year? Walters? Oh there is someone i know from the 2004 or 2005 class I was wondering if yall knew if yall went to Agnes!

    !!!!!!!!!!!

    1. Hi Rosa! Yes we graduated from Agnes Scott in 2005 and have stayed in Decatur ever since. It’s so nice to hear from a fellow Scottie!

  22. That is so awesome! I have been wondering ever since I saw a picture and one of you was wearing the ring. Do yall remember a Katherine Mohney? She was a short red headed gal?
