At the Freer

When Lar and I took our quick trip to Maryland a few weeks ago we made sure to spend a day in D.C. (“downtown” is what we grew up calling it). The one thing that I’ve really missed since I’ve moved away is the free museums. Growing up I completely took the Smithsonian for granted and always thought every kid was less than an hour away from a free National Gallery.

So now every time we go back home to visit, we almost always make a point of going to the Mall to stop by our favorite museums/galleries. My top two absolute favorite are the Hirshhorn Museum and the Freer Gallery. We didn’t get a chance to stop by the Hirshhorn (so I didn’t get my modern art fix), but we did have a few minutes to go to the Freer and check out the Peacock Room for the 100th time.

I wish I could take photos in the Peacock Room to post on this blog because it really has a magical feel to it. A few photos from outside the gallery will have to do.

Here I am hiding behind a large plant in the back of the Freer:

I should have figured that my neutral-colored outfit would fit right in D.C. Blacks and beiges are never out of style in our nation’s capital. My mom refers to it as the attack of the “bland Washingtonian beige.” I don’t really mind the blandness – at least not when there’s free entry into world renown museums to be had!

  1. I LOVE THE PEACOCK ROOM!!! 🙂

it really is just so majestic and beautiful, no? of course, i love pretty much anything peacock, so there’s that.

  2. So I grew up in Decatur and now live in Northern VA. I found your blog amongst other Decatur blogs, and started following. It always amuses me that you guys come up here and are from here.

  3. I agree!! i’ve been in dc for a few years and have only gone downtown like twice. one time for our friends bday the security guard for the sculpture garden let us go in after hours to have a picnic, it was awesome. i hate that i haven’t spent as much time downtown as i should have this summer
    love the new website!

    1. How cool! I love, love, love the sculpture garden. Lauren and I use to eat lunch down there when she was interning at the National Portrait Gallery.

  4. Love going to the Mall in D.C.! Gosh, I really do miss the east coast, and specifically that area. We’re going to visit the MD/VA area in Oct. for a friend’s wedding and I can’t wait! You look so classic and chic here!

  5. I love visiting museums and I wish there’s a big museum here like that! Black and white are never out of style!! You look very pretty and elegant! xxoxoxoxo

  6. Hey again! Your comment made me smile re: accidentally biting yourself! Mel and I were vicious toward eachother when we were young. Besides scratching my face and giving me a scar, she knocked out two of my already loose baby teeth that I never found! I had to leave a very sad note to the tooth fairy asking for money without having my teeth. 🙂 We also pulled eachother’s hair and I recall a lot of kicking. Definitely not fond memories!

  7. And the thing with neutral palettes is that they make packing a breeze. You just put the emphasis on colour or character in your accessories. I had the hardest time figuring that out when I packed for Canada before the wedding. It took me four hours to pack, but only after a serious and frantic Google scramble to get advice on packing for long travel.

    Neutrals+accessories.

Now if they only made super comfy but super stylish heels for traveling. I don’t want to rely on my rocket dog flats and flip flops all the time for walking around. o_O
