Free Tees!

Our very talented friends at The Wren’s Nest (oldest house museum in Atlanta, home of Joel Chandler Harris, author of the Uncle Remus tales- you remember now, don’t you?) asked us to take a few shots of their t-shirts for their online store (click here to check our their shop).

Renaissance man (musician and photographer) Troy Cono took the photos of Cath- I love them! My handy remote took mine. Oh, I’m assuming you guys can tell us apart: Cath has the bangs and looks professionally photographed 😉

Oh and hey, didn’t I mention something about free tees? I’ll let Lain, executive director of The Wren’s Nest, explain it to you:

Read 5 Brer Rabbit stories, complete this form, and turn it in at the Wren’s Nest. We’ll give you your choice of t-shirt. Want to read 20 stories and collect all 4? That’s A-OK too (just not all at once! We gotta pay the bills, after all).

Too cool to read 5 Brer Rabbit stories? Shirts are $15. Don’t have any Brer Rabbit stories? Here, let’s get you some.

Now is that a deal or is that a deal? You get to read (book worms unite!) and you get a cute free tee for doing it!

Happy reading!!!

p.s. They come in children and adult sizes.

p.p.s. Speaking of tees, Cath and I will be hanging out with The Process and Esperanza guys tonight at the Graveyard Tavern. Locals, stop on by- let us know if and when you’re coming! We’d love to see you!

Tough Call: Esperanza vs The Process

logo_aroundatl

For those of you who have been loyally following us for a while (we love you!), you know that we’re big fans of the two Atlanta apparel/design groups known as Esperanza and The Process/Epidemik Coalition (evidence here, here, here, here, here, here and here). So we’re a little doubtful that one is going to triumph over the other at this Thursday’s Graveyard Tavern shindig when they go head to head in a number of bar-related challenges. Nevertheless, there’s no doubt that it’ll be entertaining! And of course the Esperanza and Process guys can’t have an event without an awesome tee. This Thursday they will be showing off a special new collaboration tee. Esperanza and Process unite!!

What is the point of duking it out, you ask? To warm-up for Esperanza and Process’ Hawks Season Opener block party on the 28th. One ticket to the party will get you a center-court seat, pregame tailgate, Chick-Fil-A meal, courtside access for pregame warm-ups, and a gift bag.

Lar and I don’t know much about sports (I actually had to double check that the Hawks were the basketball team while writing this post), but even I’m tempted by the tailgating, gift bags and all around fun that’s guaranteed when these two companies host a party.

See you at The Graveyard this week and buy your block party tickets here. May the best t-shirt/graphic design team win/tie!

Decatur Book Fest: Wild Thing

logo_aroundatl

Greetings from the Decatur Book Festival! We hope you all are having a fantastic Saturday morning (egads! I mean afternoon- already!). I’ve been milling around the Square all morning and Cath has been hard at work at the City Hall events.

For you non-locals/new AsianCajun readers, Cath and I tend to blab about our adopted hometown of Decatur, Georgia. Decatur cozies up to Atlanta on the east (we are 6 miles from downtown ATL), and this weekend we happen to be the host of the largest book festival in the South East. If you need a quick visual of Decatur, imagine Stars Hallow in Gilmore Girls, add a few thousand people and a little more diversity, and you have Decatur.

For you locals that might have stopped by the Blogger Tent, I apologize if I wasn’t there! Being the prepared person that I am, I forgot my card reader and had to run home so that I could upload the likes of these (see below!):

It’s my first run in with a Wild Thing!!! Definitely a highlight of the morning. He must’ve escaped from the press junket for the movie coming out in October. If you would like to spot him too- head over to Little Shop of Stories- that’s where I found him.

My bf and I stopped by The Wren’s Nest tent to say hello to our wonderful friends Lain and Amelia. Non-locals, when you come visit us in the ATL, the AsianCajuns are taking you to the Wren’s Nest. Don’t know what it is? Click here.

If you stop by The Wren’s Nest tent you should also take a look at this literary journal (no, not just because I designed the cover- [fluttering eyelashes]). A group of fantastic high school students wrote, designed, and compiled the journal during the summer. Pretty fantastic work for anyone, let alone 16 year olds- most impressive.

My Book Festival accoutrements: festival program, leather purse and sunnies, and a stack of books to hull around.

Apart from the Wayfarer’s Journal, I picked up the rest of the books at the Eagle Eye Books tent- the friendliest booksellers- go check ’em out!

I hope to run into some of you guys on the Square!

psst! I’m not blogging from the Blogger tent at the moment. I am actually [glances around furtively] sitting in the quiet and beautiful office where the Mayor usually works!  I brought my Mac up here because the blogger tent is a bit crowded and it’s cool and quiet away from the fray. Ooo the perks of having a twin who works for the beautiful city of Decatur. Thanks, Mr. Mayor!

Hope you all are having a fab Saturday! More hurried posts to come!

xoxo,

Lar

Let the Weekend Begin! Decatur Book Festival Fashion:

logo_aroundatl

Book Festival fashion is a tricky thing – especially if you’re working at the festival. Those millions of cute outfits you see at Glastonbury really aren’t practical when you know you’ll be running around in the Atlanta heat for 12+ hours. So what’s the solution? I usually end up wearing my festival tee, shorts and my TOMS – it’s not revolutionary, but it’s stylish and comfortable. However, this year I’ve already been out-book-festival-fashioned by Daren Wang, the executive director himself:

daren_dbfoutfit

This is the perfect book fest wear: backpack (for festival programs, business cards, iphone, radio etc.), nametag, festival t-shirt, khaki’s and, the best, most covetable shoes ever!

Sol Design sent these over to Daren – red Chuck Taylors with bookzilla (see previous post) on them!! I can’t repress my jealousy – I want a pair of my own.

Attack of the Decatur Book Festival

logo_aroundatl

So we AsianCajuns have mentioned the AJC Decatur Book Festival quite a few times over the years. Namely here, here, here, here and here. Needless to say, we’re big fans of the Labor Day weekend event and this year is going to be bigger and better than ever.

Lots of fun, new stuff going on including the following 2009 book festival creatures (developed by the uber creative peeps at Lenz Marketing):

L to R: Bookzilla, Mighty Carl Jung, Read-an, me (not a book fest creature), Bookwurm and Authora.

Other festival highlights include Sir Harold Evans as the keynote, over 150 authors, a dedicated teen venue, pickled okra contest, a mariachi brunch, a dance about verbs and adverbs, an author wrestling  legendary professional wrestler Abdullah the Butcher and a Eudora Welty tribute performed by Mary Chapin Carpenter, Caroline Herring, Kate Campbell and Claire Holley.

Plus, plus! we’ll be tweeting about all these events throughout the weekend and hanging out, posting posts at the Decatur Book Festival blogger tent on Saturday from 11 to noon and 2 to 3 p.m. So for you non-Atlantans, you can still feel like you’re at the book festival by staying posted to AsianCajuns. Word.

T-Shirt/Jeans Uniform

cathstyle_logo_rev

Usually I get a little peeved when a celeb or model says, “I’m really just a t-shirt and jeans girl.” It seems like such a cop out. It’s so not descriptive. Thin, tissue shirts with skinny jeans? Baggy boyfriend jeans with baby doll tees? Frumpy denim with old boxy Hanes tees screen printed with company logos?

I could say the outfit below is just jeans and a t-shirt, but it’s a bit more than that, right? At least I’d like to think so. Thin, slightly oversized white tee with cropped skinny jeans, brown leather belt and my favorite platforms.

taptap
UO t-shirt, Bitten jeans, secondhand belt, Frye heels.

Lar took this pic of me right after we met up with a friend at Tap in midtown. I’m a big fan of Tap: good food (they use to have the best fried okra ever, but sadly no longer have it on their menu), good beer list, wine on tap and an unusual understated interior (red stained wood paneling with a modern take on a rustic look). Also the special that night was pate wrapped in bacon. What’s not to love?
