New Shoes for the Spring

chambray and blue jeans

Thrifted top (from Lar) • J.Crew Outlet jeans • Kate Spade bag • new! BC wedges

One of my main new year’s resolutions is to stick to a strict budget so I can save up enough money to see Lar again as soon as possible. For the past couple of months, that’s meant buying very little apart from necessities. I’m not going to lie, it’s been hard. I never thought I was a huge clotheshorse to begin with – especially compared to all the other amazingly prolific fashion bloggers out there – but now I realize I use to spend a fair share of my budget on clothes and accessories. So for the past few months, I’ve only purchased one dress(Prabal Gurung for Target dress) and a handful of jewelry from Forever 21. . . until last week, that is. Sq/Ft, one of my favorite local boutiques, was not only having a sale, they were also offering a deal on Scoutmob!

BC shoes

My inner non-saving, clotheshorse got the best of me and I purchased these black BC wedges. I was in luck though because they were marked down from $80 to $36. Not bad, right? They’re very comfortable and like a spring version of this winter’s ubiquitous wedge sneaker. I’d add a link to them online, but I can’t find them on the BC website. If you live locally and you want to purchase them, Sq/Ft still had quite a few pairs left.

Update: My cousin found the shoes on Amazon.com here. They’re around $70 and there are four colors to choose from. I think the mint version is gorgeous. Thanks for the link, Kelly!

The weather this weekend was gorgeous and definitely warm enough for me to try out my new kicks. Troy and I walked the dogs to the local market and it was marvelous. If I didn’t have so much school work, I would have wanted to go on a picnic and stuffed myself with wine and cheese.

Wheatie would have preferred a picnic too.

Hope you all are having a good Monday!

_________

Dearest Lar,

I wish you could have flown home for this weekend so you could have enjoyed the warm weather! I can’t believe I was frolicking about in 60 degree weather and you had snow this morning in Edinburgh. At least it was the start of daylight savings today so now we’re only four hours apart – woohoo!

TGIF Friday Link Love: My Spring Wish List

Happy Friday and International Women’s Day! I’m mixing things up a bit and doing my spring wish list for this week’s link love. I tried to get Lar to create her own wish list, but her anti-consumerism got the best of her. Stay strong, Lar!
Spring Wish List

1.) The perfect spring/summer dress.

2.) The summer version of the classic button-up chambray shirt.

3.) A beautiful ring for less than $150.

4.) There’s something so feminine and ballet-ic about this cami.

5.) Neon khakis seems oxymoronic, but also ingenius.

6.) The clutch that goes with everything.

7.) The perfect flats for work.

Skip N’ Whistle Sale on Fab.com

I’ve had a special place in my heart for Skip N’ Whistle ever since they sent me my tacky Christmas sweater t-shirt. They have the most cheeky t-shirt prints and the company is based out of New Orleans (yay Cajuns!). So even though Lar and I don’t usually post on Thursdays, I wanted to let you lovelies know about the Skip N’ Whistle sale going on over at Fab.com for the next two days.

skip n whistle fab sale

These are just four of the options on sale. I think the pup is my favorite, but the bear one has the perfect mix of sweetness, weirdness and awesomeness rolled into one. Then that cat just looks damn cool and the unicorn shirt randomly reminds me of this Macklemore song. Which one should I get?! Ugh, I don’t know! First world problems abound!

You can see all of Skip ‘N Whistles sweatshirts here. Happy sales shopping!

What to Do in Glasgow

Glasgow

Glasgow feels like another world compared to Edinburgh, but it’s just a short hour train ride from our flat. It’s the grittier, younger (as in Industrial Revolution versus Edi’s medieval), bigger, less expensive (yahoo!), rainier (I know), but warmer (usually — it’s all relative) and flatter city. It has the majestic River Clyde running through its heart and delicious food on almost every corner. Matt and I were just there for the weekend but are smitten, so if you have 48 hours in Glasgow, this is what we recommend:

1) Do something arty. There are museums, galleries and house tours galore. Might I suggest House for an Art Lover, designed by Charles Renne Mackintosh in 1901. At £4.50 — that includes the audio tour — it’s a steal-of-a-deal. Yes, audio tour. We are wild and crazy when we city hop.

House-for-an-art-lover

2) Take a wee stroll through the city and hit up some of the beautiful parks. We went through Kelvingrove to get to Byres Road — home to all things delicious.

Kelvingrove-park

3) Shopping. Since moving to Scotland I’ve put the kabash on my spending habits, but I’ve been saving my pennies (pences?) for a trip to Cos. Glasgow seems to have at least twice the number of high street shops that Edinburgh does.

Cos-glasgow

4) Riding the subway! Edinburgh’s bus system is brilliant, but I miss subterranean public transport. Glasgow’s is like a mini London tube — it just runs in a circle (you can’t make a mistake regardless of where you want to go) and is known as Clockwork Orange (it’s round and its branding is orange).

Subway-glasgow

5) Eat delicious food! Our new favorite restaurant? Hanoi Bike Shop (yup, it’s a restaurant). The most delicious Vietnamese food I’ve ever had. We loved it so much we had dinner and brunch there (15 hours apart).Hanoi-bike-shop

——

Cath,

I can’t believe you’ve never been to Glasgow! I think you would love it because it feels like Edi is to Washington as Glasgow is to New York — and you loves New York! People are also much friendlier (again — fits the analogy!) and warmer — it made me miss the ATL. Strangers never come up to you in Edinburgh, but in Glasgow we had people start conversations with us in elevators (gasp!), at restaurants, on the street! We have been so Edinburghified we both just kind of blinked at people.

Next time you are in Scotland, we’ll go together okay? Save your pences for Cos! Do you see the boots in the pic? They are heavenly!

Miss you terribly terribly mucho.

Your Banh Mi-ified Sis,

Lar

Brunch Time in Atlanta

My Favorite Atlanta Brunch Spots

Lar and I have been talking about doing mini city guides for Atlanta and Edinburgh since we like to (window) shop and eat so much. This post is my first attempt with a list of my favorite places to eat brunch in Atlanta. There’s something so comforting about a weekend brunch. Maybe I just like the idea of waking up late and driving some place where someone will make me pancakes and eggs with an endless supply of coffee. Whatever the case, when I’m in a brunch kind of mood, here’s where I go:

Sun in My Belly – This one is probably my all-time favorite brunch spot because it’s within walking distance of my house, has Anthropologie-like decor and offers the most amazing honey-glazed bacon. I always get the Kirkwood Breakfast, but the french toast, the lox and bagels, the homemade granola with fresh fruit, and everything else on the menu is brunch perfection.

Gato Bizco Cafe – Located across the street from the original and very popular Flying Biscuit Cafe (see below), Gato is like a hipster’s Waffle House minus the greasiness. I’ve never had anything bad here and love the small footprint – there’s only a handful of booths and a small counter.

Home Grown – Get the biscuits and gravy (unless you’re vegan/vegetarian)!! It’ll be the best $3 brunch you’ve ever had. If you’ve never had biscuits and gravy, shame on you! What are you doing up north? Come down and try Home Grown’s and then you’ll really know what biscuits and gravy is supposed to taste like.

Ria’s Bluebird – Plenty of vegetarian dishes here. I love the huevos rancheros, but I’ve heard the beef brisket is to die for. Like all the places listed in the post, expect a wait on the weekend. I usually go in the summer, so I can drink my cup of coffee out front while waiting for a table.

Rise-N-Dine (pictured in this post) – Right by Emory University (so expect to see lots of Uggs and North Face), but very down to earth. The first time I came here I immediately fell in love with the vintage decor and oilcloth fabric on the tables. Also, they serve Nutella pancakes. Enough said.

Radial Cafe – Dining here is like giving a big ol’ bear hug to the local community. The food is all locally sourced and almost everything that leaves your table is composted.

Flying Biscuit Cafe – With locations all over the Atlanta area now, Flying Biscuit has become pretty suburbanized so I would recommend going to the original location in Candler Park for a little more flair. The biscuits are still some of the best around and you can’t go wrong with the organic oatmeal pancakes or a side of the creamy, buttery grits.

Waffle House – Sorry WH haters, I have to put this on my list. I probably eat here more often after a late night than at brunch, but it needs to be included because sometimes Waffle House’s cheese ‘n eggs are the only thing that will hit the spot. I usually go to the one in Avondale Estates because the service is consistently friendly and it’s located a block away from the Waffle House Museum – yes, that’s a real thing!!

Keep in mind this is by no means a complete list. There are plenty of other wonderful dining establishments that serve brunch in Atlanta that I just haven’t frequented enough to be a fair judge. The latest issue of Atlanta Magazine has a much more thorough, unbiased list (every place I listed is on the east or south side of the city).

Eugina Kim headband

Troy and I went to Rise N Dine on Saturday for brunch. We split the Polish omelet and homemade chicken sausage biscuit. It was freezing this weekend – at least by Atlanta standards – so all I wanted was warm, comfort food.

Any brunch fans out there? What are your favorite brunch spots in your hometown? Any Denver readers? Troy and I will be going to Denver in April and need some brunch suggestions.

PS: Congrats to Marian for winning the Sinless Cocktails contest! I used Randomize.org to choose a winner. Thank you to everyone who entered! Marian, I’ll be sending your email to the owners of Sinless and they’ll be getting in touch with you.

Dear Lar,

As I was writing this, I was trying to think of all of the places I like to each brunch in Edinburgh. There’s the German bakery of course and there was that cute French bakery we went to last August near your old flat in Morningside. I’ll get the oatmeal at Chocolate Soup any day and a bagel at Elephants and Bagels, but surely there’s other brunch/breakfast-y places. Or is brunch not as big in the UK? I always figured that if there were elevenses then surely there’s brunch, right?

I can’t believe I got to talk to you twice this weekend on Skype! So glad you and Matt had fun in Glasgow and actually found some sun. I can’t wait to see your post on your weekend adventure!

xoxo, Cath

Twin Love: the Cadbury Twins!

Neshah-and-Nyah-cadbury Neshah-and-Nyah

We’ve had the pleasure of meeting lots of wonderful people since starting AsianCajuns nearly six years ago: fellow bloggers, artists, writers, chefs, independent shop owners, stylists, designers, and musicians. But strangely enough, we’ve never met another pair of twins. I didn’t even realize this lack of doubles until I got an email a few days ago from the lovely Neshah Hines. Twin connection! The only down-side? It made me miss Cath even more than usual.

Neshah and her twinie Nyah are the new faces for Cadbury Creme Eggs (non-UK residents, you can catch their commercial below). This talented duo are fresh out of acting school and getting ready to take the world by storm. So why pay attention to this pair of soon-to-be-famous twins? Well, apart from Mary Kate and Ashley there really isn’t a set of identical twins acting together — and that seems surprising and sad, at least to our twin-centric minds. So just remember you heard it here first (from one set of twins about another): Neshah and Nyah Hines.

I did a mini-interview via email with these lovely ladies, so you could get to know them a bit better:

What’s it like working as actresses together (versus going solo)?
Nyah: It’s really cool to work with Neshah cause we’ve got such a unique bond. I love it!
Neshah: It’s kind of like working with yourself cause your around someone your so comfortable with. It’s just natural.

Do you prefer to work together rather than getting separate parts?
Nyah: I don’t mind working apart but I always prefer having Neshah with me because you have someone to bounce off and laugh with!
Neshah: I really love when Nyah is with me cause she will be completely honest with me and let me know what I’m doing well as well as how I can improve. It’s fine working solo though because I can always go back to Nyah at the end.

Dream acting jobs?
Both: Hollywood!
Nyah: I would really love to play a superhero or a Villain!
Neshah: I would love to be in really romantic chick flicks or maybe some spicy action films.

Who are your acting gurus/idols?
Nyah: Cameron Diaz! I love her amazing smile! She represents girl power!
Neshah: I have so many! Right now I love Amy Adams, I think she’s super talented! She can do everything!

Are you guys best friends?
Nyah: Yeh of course! We talk about everything. Its great!
Neshah: Yes we are! We are soo close and we have our fair share of tiffs just like best friends do.

Do you have a lifetime supply of Cadbury Creme Eggs?
Nyah: No, Only in my dreams! hehe
Neshah: OMG! I WISH! No we have to buy them like everyone else 🙁

Follow them on twitter: @Neshah_x and @Nyahbob

Dear Cath,

Oh my good lord, seeing Neshah’s and Nyah’s photos together make me miss you so much! We should have totally gone into acting — or something anything we could have done together and not been apart. How did we get to Economic Development Coordinator and Graphic Designer. Those rarely go hand-in-hand or look nearly as natural in head shots (remember our ballet headshots — gulp).

I hope more twins find us on the intertubes. Twin power forever!

xoxoxoxo,

Lar

Happy Belated National Margarita Day and a Give Away!

I had planned to do this post today before I realized that national margarita day was last Friday – dagnabbit! Well, regardless of my bad blog post timing, let me tell you about how this post came about.

A week ago, the kind folks over at Sinless sent me their margarita and mojito mixes to test and to do a give away.

Sinless Margarita recipe

Usually I don’t push products on AsianCajuns, but hear me out! Here’s why I’m excited about these mixes:

1.) They’re only 5 calories (one of my new years resolution was to, uh, drink less calories)
2.) They’re local! The cute couple that started Sinless lives right by me.
3.) Unlike most mixes, these are all natural. There aren’t any preservatives in the mixes, so you have to keep the bottles refrigerated.

sinless margarita salt

I whipped up a batch of margaritas yesterday and made a salt/sugar/lime zest to rim the glasses.

sinless margarita

It was actually warm enough outside on Sunday that it felt like margarita weather. I had every intention of following up the margaritas with some mojitos, but realized that I didn’t have any rum in the house. Guess what I’ll be drinking next weekend! I wonder when national mojito day is.

Sinless Margarita only 69 calories

I didn’t do a full outfit shot with this post because I’ll be showing off the dress I’m wearing when I do a post on the Tastemaker Magazine/ Coco Rae photo shoot (the cardi is H&M and the bracelet is from Forever 21).

sinless margarita for men

Want to try a Sinless mixer for yourself? To enter the give away, all you have to do is like the Sinless Margarita Facebook page and the AsianCajuns Facebook page (if you haven’t, ahem, already done so 😉 ) and leave a comment on this post with your email address. I’ll choose a winner at random on Friday. Good luck and happy, low-calorie drinking!

___________

Dearest Lar,

Are margaritas big in Scotland? I know I’ve never ordered one at a pub in Edinburgh, but that’s because I’m always so cold in Scotland that I just end up wanting to drink whiskey.

I hate that we didn’t get a chance to really talk this weekend. That just means we’ll have to Skype twice next weekend and email a lot during the week, okay?

Miss you like crazy.

xoxo, Cath

TGIF Link Love + Nail Polish!

AsianCajuns Double Mint nail polish

Happy Friday, lovelies! See those photos up there? See that nail polish? Yeah, that’s AsianCajuns nail polish!!! Actually the official color is called AsianCajuns Double Mint. Get it? Like it? I hope so!

This is all thanks to Coco Rae and Tastemaker Magazine. Coco Rae’s Spring/Summer line is inspired by Atlanta bloggers and we all celebrated with a sneak peek party last night at Fab’rik in Buckhead. I’ll let you all know when the polish is officially available.

In the meantime, check out the fabulous bloggers who also have a color in the collection: The Fashionista Next Door, The ATL Go To Girl, Lipgloss and Binky, Mattieologie, The Style Pundit.

And here’s a couple more links to take you into the weekend:

Have a great weekend!

News Alert: The Sun Came Out in Scotland!

AsianCajuns-Lar-Edinburgh Edinburgh-walk Edinburgh-sunny-day

This is a rare, rare sight: Edinburgh basking in the sun. In fact, we’ve had three consecutive sunny days — and that hasn’t happened since August! It’s still barely more than 45 degrees, but Matt and I spent three hours Sunday morning sitting outside and clawing wiggling our fingers at the vitamin D coming from the sky.

For those of you lucky enough to be in sunny climes, let me give you a few stats about Edinburgh to put our euphoria in perspective:

• Seattle is 50% sunnier than Edinburgh (and we’re much further north, so the sun we do get is quite a bit weaker)

• Oslo is sunnier than Edinburgh 10 months out of the year

• Throughout the year, on average, Edinburgh has less than four hours of sunlight per day

• Atlanta has twice as many hours of sun per day on average than Auld Reekie (see above)

• On the shortest day of the year in Edinburgh, the sun is only 10.7° above the horizon — that’s dusk for most of the world

Edinburgh is a beautiful city, but my-oh-my can she be gloomy and moody.

Scotland-sunny

——–

Dear Cath,

You might have seen President Obama in person, but I saw THE SUN in person! Can you tell my brain has been mangled by the lack of vitamin D? All I can do is dream about sunny climates and yearn to be there. Thank goodness spring is coming or I would have to start walking around with my SAD lamp permanently strapped to my body.

Is it the weekend yet? I want to skype with you!

xoxoxox,

Lar
