Goodbye Summer

Atlanta might not be as chilly as Edinburgh this time of year, but it’s slowly beginning to feel like fall. Late September/early October is still pretty warm, but you usually have to wear a jacket in the morning and evening. Having to wear a jacket at all means fall has arrived in the south – at least according to me.

These photos are from a few weeks ago, but I figured they were good end-of-the-summer ones. I wore this outfit to the Decatur Kitchen Garden fundraiser dinner along with a gallon of bug spray. It didn’t get very cold last winter so the bugs have been extra bad this year – don’t even get me started on the amount of Raid I’ve used in my house for the past few months!

The dinner featured multiple courses by local chefs and bottomless glasses of wine that was of much better quality than I’m used to drinking. I can never go back to two buck chuck again! Actually, who am I kidding? I will never turn my nose up to wine from TJ’s.

Did I mention the event was in the historic Decatur cemetery? Sounds weird, I know, but it was actually a beautiful setting.

The best thing about this summery/springy Prabal Gurung dress is that it’ll actually transition to winter really well. There are bits of black in it so it’ll look really good with black tights and a long cardigan.

This is my favorite time of the year: jacket weather, cool evenings, pumpkin spice everything (Lar and I have been making these healthy cookies). Stay tuned for my Wednesday post for a more fall-ish outfit than this one.

Before I end this post, here are two more things to get you started on a Monday:

1. If you haven’t done so already, make sure to enter our Fantas Eyes give away. I’ll choose five lucky winners tonight. Each winner will get two pairs of sunglasses and a scarf. Contest ends at 5pm!

Dearest Lar,

You would laugh at me if you came to Atlanta right now. It probably feels like a hot Scottish summer here. Nevertheless, I’m grasping onto signs of fall because I love this time of year. It’s still a little too warm to wear boots in Atlanta but I see women doing it so I know I’m not the only one looking forward to cooler weather.

Did I tell you about the sheep at the local cemetery? They’ve been shipped in for a week to eat all of the invasive plants and they’re so cute! It’s probably not that impressive to you since there are ten times as many sheep in Scotland as there are people. Still, you have to admit that it’s pretty cool.

I wish I could send you some extra sunshine!

My Love/Hate for Autumn

FYUL-AsianCajuns

Clear, cool days. Crunchy heaps of leaves. Crisp air (a cliche, but it is so crispy, isn’t it? Not another word for it). Pumpkin-spiced, cinnamon-y coffee drinks. Scarves and wooly sweaters/jumpers when they are still a novelty to layer and not just a means of keeping the winter from sapping your body heat. Oooo it’s all so good isn’t it?

Living in Scotland, we start fall early. Right at the beginning of September to be exact. The temperatures dropped, I started wearing layers and drinking even more cups of tea (something that doesn’t really slow down in the summer in Britain — a cultural difference I’m still slightly confused about. Hot tea on a hot day cools you down, you say? I tried it and I’m not buying it!). Curling up in a cozy blanket and lighting a chai scented candle. Yes. You feel good, autumn. You really do.

The flip side to autumn wrapping it’s luxurious cozy arms around me is. the impending darkness. Living in Edinburgh we are pretty far north — on par with Sitka, Alaska. I don’t know much about Sitka (was there a Sandra Bullock/Ryan Renolds movie set there?), but it sounds cold and northern. Edinburgh isn’t the same kind of cold, but it is the same kind of dark. By the middle of December the sun will have set by 3:39 pm. That doesn’t sound too crazy until you factor in the angle of the sun before it sets — it’s just 15 degrees or so off the horizon. All. Day. “Long.” Making the days dusky rather than, well, sunny. And the sun is just barely above the horizon after 2:30 pm, so it is pitch black by 3:30. Oooo I’m getting shivers down my sweater-swathed back just thinking of it!

I remember even living in southern Atlanta I would feel a twinge of sadness knowing the days were shortening, but before living in Edinburgh I had never experienced dusk all day — a sun rise so low it doesn’t clear the five story buildings that populate Edinburgh.

So as much as I love the change of summer into glorious fall, I also inwardly panic. So what do you do with the panic? You bring out the big guns: the sun lamp, the vitamin D pills, the whisky, the making-the-most-of-it by planning a holiday someplace with a fireplace and stacks of books. You learn how to hibernate.

But before Matt and I go into deep hibernation mode (I think we are about four more weeks before we can’t tear ourselves from our sun lamp-lit flat), we are trying to soak up Edinburgh’s goodness. We have to because during the winter there’s a lot of mumbling, at least from me: (grumble, grumble, rubs hands together) “Why is it so dark, why is it so cold and windy! We’re inside and it’s still windy! Why is the freezing rain horizontal? How is that possible?.” Repeat. And repeat until. oh end of April. Wah wah. Whine whine. I’m a deeelight to live with in the winter, I can tell you!

But there is a lot about Edinburgh that is spectacular in the mean time. This stony city was made for the riot of colours autumn wears and the coziness you feel safely tucked away in a pub or café. Matt and I just discovered a new neighborhood haunt called FYUL (that stands for Food You Utterly Love, though I like to pretend it’s an Icelandic word I don’t understand). As you can see in the photos, the decor is gran’s living room meets salvaged loft space, and the food is delicious. Oh and do you see — the chairs are wearing tweed! I love a good tweed-covered anything (including vintage cars). We’ve already been three times in the past week. It’s so good it might actually keep us from hibernating the entire winter season.

Don’t forget to enter Cath’s Fantas Eyes giveaway below, lovely readers. I’m pea green with envy — such lovely sunnies.

——

Dear Cath,

I know you’ve Instagrammed FYUL but I had to do a proper post and tempt you even more! Today when we went back I got the veggie plate and the muesli again. Deeelicious! Matt got the soup with the crusty bread. That’s one of the hardest things being on a gluten-free diet — no eating the crusty bread with the toasty soup or the grilled pita slices with the humus. Le (grand) sigh.

Has hints of fall hit in Atlanta just yet? I can’t remember exactly what it felt like this time of year. The leaves haven’t actually started to change here, but the air certainly has. I forgot how beautiful Edinburgh can be on a blue-blue sky day when you can see for miles and miles.

I wish we could cozy up together under a faux-fur blanket and watch You’ve Got Mail while drinking spiced hot drinks (I can’t bring myself to say Pumpkin Spiced Lattes when I know I can’t drink the coffee or the milk — I’m going to learn how to make vegan chai that’s delicious  — I’m gonna!).

Sending you lots of love from autumny Edinburgh!

you are So Worth Loving

I first heard about So Worth Loving about a week ago on Cool Atlanta’s Instagram. SWL is a lifestyle + t-shirt + screen printing + band + blog + ball of positivity all rolled into one company. Read more about the concept here.

Yesterday, SWL hosted a pop-up in Plywood People’s Reynoldstown (east Atlanta) offices.

Love You Love People

I dragged my friend, Ellen, along with me. We perused the shirt collection, nibbled on some whoopie pies and pink lemonade, and got to meet the founders (Eryn and Jared) and their incredibly cute puppy (Sprocket).

I ended up getting the Ribbons and Curls tee, which I’m sure will end up in an outfit post soon.

It was such a lovely end to my day that started with my early morning hunt at Target through the Phillip Lim collection (IG evidence here and here). As soon as I got home from my Target trip, I changed into my Phillip Lim sweatpants and I wore them all day.

I know dressed-up sweatpants aren’t for everyone, but I could get used to wearing these every weekend. Elastic waistband? Check! Deep, zippered pockets? Check! An excuse to wear sweatpants out of the house? Check! (P.S., Lar was way ahead of this trend. I’m about 4 years behind. Remember this post?!)

If you don’t live in the Atlanta area, So Worth Loving might be coming your way. They’ve started a Kickstarter Campaign to raise money for a tour and there’s still a few more days to donate. I also encourage you to follow their blog for weekly inspiration.
Best of luck to Eryn, Jared, Sprocket and their team!

Dearest Lar,
Sounds like we both had good Sundays – at least as good as any Sunday can be without each other’s company! Fyul Cafe looks heavenly! Promise me that you’ll take me there when I come to visit next. I’ll consume enough clotted cream for the both of us.
Love you so much!

Falsi Gioielli

falsi-gioelli

Lovely readers, thank you for your amazing comments about my recovery process! You totally warmed my heart (and it needs considerable warming these days — I think I’m still in shock a bit) and I feel completely humbled to know so many of you have gone through the same or harder situations. As I physically get stronger, all the emotional stuff is coming to a head and I’ve been trying to work through it — but what a load of NOT fun-ness. So for a little distraction for me and you, let’s talk about two delightful things in this world: shopping and traveling!

Usually I can’t afford to do both. It’s an either or. You can shop a wee bit or you can save up for a trip to, well, Italy for instance. But that’s why it’s magical when the worlds collide (in my frugal one).

Many moons ago, I went to Florence on a school trip. I slipped away from the rest of the tour group when we had some free time to wonder the city and stumbled upon a treasure of Fake Jewels. That is in fact the name of this colorful and inexpensive boutique I found — if you say it in Italian it sounds even nicer “fal-si Jo-yelli:” Falsi Gioielli.

Imagine a shoebox of a space painted completely white with very simple perspex hooks all along the walls. And on said hooks are a riot of color — beads and thread. And not dainty seed beads with polite bits of ribbon, but giant plastic baubles with brilliant thick string made into necklaces and bracelets and bracelet/necklaces that you can wear as belts! I was totally smitten, and even more so when I saw the prices matched my weenie student budget. I snapped up two necklace/belts for Cath and I: something unique, totally Italian/local and affordable. The best kind of travel souvenir.

When Cath was in Florence just a few weeks ago, she stopped by Falsi Gioielli again (10 years after my first trip) and picked up two new necklaces (the one I’m wearing in the pic above and the blue one below). We’re slowly building on our fake jewelry collection, one Florence trip at a time. And the next one (Kitcath, I’m looking at you), we’ll most definitely have to be there together!

This is in no way a sponsored post — I don’t think Falsi Gioielli have a clue about us. We just wanted to spread the word so that when you next go to Florence (because you will, lovely reader), do make a stop for your fake jewels. You’ll feel so Florentine and chic and still have plenty of euros left over for copious amounts of creamy gelato.

Dear Cath,

I think I’m still too emotional at this point not to think about the Italy trip and just feel blue that we didn’t get to explore Venice, Florence and Rome together. I really do still feel cheated a bit. So wrong, I know. We had a beautiful week in our villa, but I’m still fist-shaking at my recovery. It’s hard to feel so exhausted and miserable in a beautiful place with one’s twinie. Wrong, I tell you!

I miss you like mad (as per. always!)

Love you!

Trying to Be Stylish Abroad

Italy outfits escape live travel

I consider myself a planner. I love to plan for trips. I make clothing lists, site-seeing lists, hotel/stay detail lists, and detailed itineraries before all of my trips. I wasn’t able to plan for my Italy trip nearly as much as I would have liked since I had a final due 3 days before leaving and I was more worried about Lar than figuring out travel details. Nevertheless, I put a decent amount of studying time thinking about what clothes I’d want to wear in Italy. I established a color palette (navy blue, white, and neon green) and was able to fit all of my clothes in a small-ish hiking backpack.

Even with a limited wardrobe, I imaged that I would be flitting about Italy looking elegant, non-touristy and well-traveled. Ha! How naive I was! How did I think $10 Old Navy tanks would equal elegance?! Also, why did I think summer would be magically cooler in Italy?!

I mentioned how hot I was in my Venice post. Well, it didn’t get any cooler in Florence, Rome or Tivoli. So I spent most of my vacation trying to stay as cool as possible. I only wore my jeans on the plane and I only wore my ankle denim in the mornings. Otherwise, I was in tank tops and shorts 90 percent of the time. The only exception was the one dress I packed that became a travel favorite:

Italy outfits favorite dress
The dress is from Lulu’s two years ago and has pretty much fallen apart since I wore and washed it 5 times in Italy. Still, it was great because it didn’t wrinkle easily and there was the NVSS (no visible sweat stain) factor – I know, I’m sorry, it’s gross.

Accessory details: Fjallraven backpack (my new favorite bag) • Marc by Marc Jacobs sunglasses • r-ki-tekt necklace • Stella & Dot scarf (I bought a matching one for Lar)

When Troy met up with me in Florence, I tried to make an effort and wore a skirt – by midday I had changed back into shorts. Sorry, Troy!

Italy outfit neon green and navy blue
Outfit details: Bobi tank from Squash Blossom Boutique • Asos lace skirt (Lar has the coral version) • Falsi Gioielli necklace purchased in Florence (we’ll be blogging about that wonderful shop shortly) • Birkenstocks purchased in Venice

If I had one outfit to sum up my Italy wardrobe it would be, I’m ashamed to say, the one below: a tank top and shorts. I look like I’m supposed to be on the beach – not exploring an Italian city – but I wasn’t ashamed at the time, just really, really hot and sweaty.

Italy Outifts shorts and a tee
Outfit details: C & C California tank • Target belt (old) • Paige Denim shorts

Below is the $10 Old Navy tank I alluded to earlier. I packed one in white and navy blue. They’re super soft and perfect for hot weather, but I felt so. . . American wearing them.

Italy Outfits white tank
Outfit details: J.Crew denim • TOMs shoes • Jami bracelet • Campers sandals from Sq/Ft Boutique

I wore my trusty Havaianas the whole time I was at the villa in Tivoli. It was heavenly – and not stylish as all 😉

Italy outfits flippy flops

If I had to do it all again (packing for the trip I mean), I would have invested in some non torn-up shorts, packed more summer dresses, and purchased a pair of comfy leather sandals ahead of time. Also, I would have packed about 100 gallons of bug repellent. All things to keep in mind for my return trip someday!

____________

Dearest Lar,

Even though you were officially convalescing on the trip, you were about a million times more stylishly dressed than I was. I wish I had thought to purchase some knit summer dresses and flow-y blouses like you did. I know you never believe me when I say/write this, but you are infinitely more stylish than I am. Next time I’ll just let you buy and pack for me, okay?

Love you so!

Recovery

IMG_8340

Thank you guys so much for the sweet messages here on AsianCajuns while I’ve been away.

These past six weeks have been bewildering, scary and exhausting. As Cath mentioned a few weeks ago, I was in the hospital for two weeks due to complications caused by endometriosis. I had a burst cyst and a tenacious infection that was treated with surgery and mah-hooosive doses of antibiotics. Slowly, but surely I’ve been on the mend (woohoo!) — but it’s the “slowly” that takes me by surprise.

This is going to sound like such a naive and stupid thing to say, but who knew recovery could take so long and be so hard. I assumed recovery would be just feeling a bit tired and getting to watch netflix for hours on end while loved ones ply you with bowls of soup and plates of buttery toast (thank you Matteo and mom!). But when your body is trying to knit itself back together post-surgery and been pummeled with what one of my doctor’s described as “liquid bleach” (aka the burliest, muscliest batch of antibiotics) and an unending supply of potent pain killers, surprisingly your body doesn’t just bounce back.

Part of my impatience at this slow recovery has come from wanting to get as far away emotionally, mentally and physically as possible from this experience. I know we are meant to build character and inner strength during very difficult times, but I seriously want to say “erm, thanks for this opportunity for spiritual growth and wisdom and all, but I think I’ll take a pass. Rain check (for never)? Okay then! Buh-bye!” And then run as far and fast as I can from reminders of hospital machine beepings and long moments of pain.

Unfortunately, it isn’t a choice — this long-haul recovery. It’s not letting me stick my fingers in my ears and go “LA LA LA LAAAA” until it’s all over (fist shake!). But with all my graceless grumblings I feel very lucky to have had so much support from family and friends. Also, if you are going to feel unwell for weeks on end, it’s not too shabby to get to spend one of those weeks in an Italian villa with some of your very favorite people in a place that I’m pretty sure might be heaven.

———-

Dear Cath,

As beautiful as Sant’ Antonio was, I feel a little cheated. I didn’t get to properly soak up Cath time because I had to spend energy on recovery (again with that patience thing — when will I learn?). Recovery is a little like a haze that blurs moments that should stand out in sharp relief: I was in a beautiful Italian villa with my twinie! Instead, the blurriness makes me think of sitting on my bed grumbling about some pain.

I can’t wait to see you again without the haze and with less grumbling on my part! And it isn’t so very far away is it? December is practically right around the corner!

Miss you to the moon and back!

Campari Spritzly Yours,

Lar

We’re Back!

Cath and Lar in Tivoli Italy

Hello, Dear Readers!

Sorry for the unexpected blog sabbatical! I don’t know what made me assume that I would have plenty of free wi-fi in Italy to blog constantly. Apart from the flat in the Venice apartment and weak service at the flat in Florence, we were internet-less for about a week and a half. I suppose being disconnected was probably best because it really got me in vacation mode (there’s so much more to see when you’re not Instagramming every five seconds!), but Lar and I missed our blog and our readers.

We’re now back at home in our respective countries and ready to share tons of photos and stories about our Italian adventure. We’ll also sprinkle in some regular blog posts too so this site doesn’t become filled with nothing but vacation photos – I promise!

Also, thank you to everyone for your sweet words of support in regards to Lar. She was in the hospital for almost two weeks and was not able to meet up with us in Rome as planned. But she was able to come to the villa we had rented where she spent most of her time recovering and resting. I’ll leave it to Lar to fill in the details of her hospitalization – if she wishes!

To wet your whistle for upcoming posts, here are some of my favorite things that I experienced during my 16 days in Italy (Lar was with me for 8 of them):

• Being reunited with Lar after not seeing her for 7.5 months.

• Consuming large quantities of delicious food and alcohol. Campari Spritzes, where have you been all my life?! Also, Troy and I found some amazing restaurants in Florence that I’ll blog about.

• Living in a 500 year old villa for 7 days – I seriously can’t wait to tell you more about this! We’re already planning another stay in a few years.

• Reading Enchanted April with Lar while lounging in the villa’s loggia – my idea of heaven.

• Attending a Vivaldi concert in Venice with my mom. It’s a super touristy thing to do, but I loved every minute of it – especially when the older British gentleman sitting behind my mom, leaned forward while she was drinking from her water bottle and said, “I hope there’s gin in there!”

In the photo above, Lar and I are walking in the upper garden of the villa we shared with seven of our friends and family members. I think everyone should get a chance to live in an Italian villa for a week. . . just saying.

Hot Venice

It doesn’t have the same ring to it as Hotlanta, but it is seriously burning up in Venice. I feel like I’ve been one big sweaty mess since touching down in Italy. Plus all of the practical shoes I packed have given me blisters so I broke down and bought a pair of Birkenstocks yesterday – so glad fugly shoes are back in style!

Apart from the heat, Venice has been amazing! No matter where you look, your eye always rests on something beautiful. It’s so fun to get lost in the maze of streets.

I’ll post some more photos and write something more compelling when I get back to the states and am not typing on my ipad.

My parents and I are heading to Florence today and then I’ll get to see Lar in Rome on Wednesday!!

Thank you to everyone who has been commenting on my IG photos!

Xoxo, Cath

See You in Italy!

The day has come! I’ll be leaving for Venice this afternoon. I can’t wait to explore Venice and Florence, but I’m really, really, really looking forward to seeing Lar in Rome in 7 days.

I’ll start posting as soon as I find some decent Wi-Fi.

Thank you for all of your comments on the last few posts! I can’t wait to share our travels with you.
