A Sunrise in Perthshire

IMG_8778 IMG_8782 IMG_8790 IMG_8792

Cath and I are both on mountain weekend get-aways: she’s in the Blueridge Mountains in Georgia and I’m in the Highlands of Perth in Scotland.

I’ll do a proper post for Monday, but I had to share these misty sunrise photos with you! It was breathtaking in person and my non-existent photography skills don’t do it justice.

I wish you were here to gulp in big lungfuls of this air with me: it is sharp and cold and so clean. And its so quiet here. Once in a while birds twitter, the wind rustles the autumn leaves, the cows moo, but otherwise it’s utter stillness. I think this city girl is turning into a country girl in her old(er) age.

Matt and I are staying in a wee stone cottage complete with a crackling fire, tartan rug and bedrooms tucked under the eaves. I’ll show you more Scottish country twee-dom in Monday’s post!

Dear Cath,

Matt and have gone into serious hibernation mode here in Perthshire. It’s freezing rain most of the day, so we’ve holed up in our roasty, toasty cottage and eaten our way through lots of vegan/gluten-free meals. Gluten-free toast (with coconut oil and manuka honey — soooo good) and lots and lots of roiboos tea.

It’s been getting dark here around 5, so last night we went to bed around 9 pm, as in we were asleep by then! Hence my ability to be up way before sunrise.

Hope you and Troy are having a wonderful time up in the Blueridge Mountains! Can’t wait to hear all about your trip! Are you guys hibernating as well?

LOVE YOU like mountains love mist (they do),

Happy Halloween!

happy halloween by lilyandval

Hope you all have a wonderful and safe Halloween!

I didn’t get it together enough to figure out a Halloween costume, but I’ll be passing out candy in my neighborhood at my friend’s house tonight. Before then, I’m picking up a 2014 Toyota Corolla for a weekend adventure (follow me on Instagram – or wait for a future blog post – for details) and afterwards I’ll head over to the Brick Store where my friend will be playing a Wes Anderson DJ set – woohoo!

Some links to get into the holiday spirit:

• Love the chalkboard art image in this post? Check out the Lily & Val shop on Etsy.

• Lar dressed up as a good luck cat for a party this past weekend and spent $0 on making her costume!

• Make some delicious Blood-Orange cocktails this evening.

• Loving Google’s Halloween doodle.

• My two favorite Halloween films: Hocus Pocus and It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

• I’ll never get tired of seeing dogs dressed up in costumes.

Local Shopping in Atlanta: Worthmore Jewelers

Once in a while Lar and I sit down and talk about what kind of content we want on AsianCajuns. We frequently circle back to topics like outfits, personal style, and travel, but we always decide we want to include more fun things about the cities we live in. I always enjoy reading blogs that unearth shops and restaurants that I wouldn’t know about as a visitor. Lar has done a great job with posts on FYUL and Falko, but I need to step up my game with Atlanta.

I don’t blame people who write off Atlanta as a giant suburb with an international airport. If you stick to the typically touristy stuff, you don’t get to see what makes this city so great. To get a true feel of Atlanta, you have to explore the inner-city neighborhoods where you’ll discover amazing shops and restaurants. So that’s where AsianCajuns comes in. I want to start including more posts on my favorite spots.

Let’s start with a trip to Worthmore Jewelers!

Worthmore Jewelers trying on session

The Worthmore Jewelers in Decatur (the original store is in Midtown) is less than a three minute walk from my work. I pass by it every time I go to Starbucks and always want to press my nose up against the window and see what’s new.

Worthmore Jewelers Nixon watches

What sets Worthmore apart from other jewelry stores is its inventory. It has a great mix of price points, styles, and items. I’m not a big jewelry person – at least not the fancy kind – so I usually just write them off as places where you buy engagement rings. But I’ve been going to Worthmore for years because they have unpretentious jewelry you’d want to wear everyday, they have the best selection of watches in town, and the staff is super welcoming and friendly.

Below I’m trying on this amazing Nixon watch. Isn’t it a beaut? It’s already on my Christmas wish list (hint, hint Troy)!

Worthmore Jewelers Nixon rose gold watch

Since I don’t know much about stones and gems I might be a little slow on the morganite trend. Have you heard of it? Apparently it’s part of the emerald family. It’s a little hard to tell in these photos, but the morganite gems are more of a light peach than pink, which I like because it makes it less princess-y – or less J.Lo/Affleck engagement ring-y.

Worthmore Jewelers morganite stones

See the delicate necklace in the photos below? Every one of those little beads is a rough cut, black diamond – kinda reminds me of this 😉

There are so many facets on each diamond that the whole necklace sparkles like crazy, but it’s ultimately very understated. I would absolutely put this on my Christmas wish list if I thought someone would plunk down $1700 on a gift for me. Still, a girl can dream, right?

Worthmore Jewelers diamond necklace

Worthmore carries Nina Nguyen jewelry based out of Colorado, which uses organic stones like geodes and fossilized ammonites.

Worthmore Jewelers Nina Nguyen Ring

Other reasons why I love Worthmore:

1.) The store is like a jewelry store and art gallery in one. They’re always having art openings and participate in the bi-annual Decatur ArtWalks (the next one is Nov. 8!).

2.) Did I mention the staff? Harris, Olya and the whole Decatur Worthmore team are wonderful!

3.) Troy brought Wheatie with him when he came to take these photos and the staff loved him. You might be able to have breakfast at Tiffany’s, but can you bring dogs to Tiffany’s? I think not! Actually, you can’t have breakfast there either, so really you should just shop at Worthmore.

Worthmore Jewelers is dog friendly

Have you ever been to Worthmore before? For you non-Atlantans, what are your favorite local jewelry shops? I can’t wait to hear from you!

Dearest Lar,

I still can’t believe that I’m going to Scotland next month! Never ever did I think we’d be spending Thanksgiving together this year – best Christmas present EVER!!

My only concern? I don’t think I can handle real cold anymore. Atlanta weather has made me a weakling when it comes to the cold. The other day I was really cold in my house so I checked the thermostat and it was at 68 degrees. That’s just sad! I’ll be permanently wrapped in a fleece blanket the whole time I’m in Scotland.

So I’ll pack lots and lots of layers for next month and just drink lots and lots of tea.

I can’t wait!!! Bring on the cold!

xoxo, Cath

Just for fun, below is what I would wear with this necklace. Gold and black is one of my favorite color combinations. I think it’s so elegant and the gold details in this outfit keep it from looking too Coven-ish.

Confession: I am a Minimalist (kinda, sorta)

asiancajuns-fall-layers fall-layers-blue fall-layers-minimal

It’s been two years since Matt and I left our friends and family stateside and hoofed it to Scotland. Man, time flies when you’re having-fun-but-also-experiencing-an-exhausting-time-of-LEARNING-THINGS.

And learning stuff is painful, isn’t it? It usually involves changing and change is a cranky, inelegant process. I don’t know about you, but I get grumpy and petulant and just want to zone out in front of Netflix with a big plate of cookies bowl of oatmeal.

But the annoying thing is, the pain and the crankiness and bumbling around usually leads to good things. Most of these things I’m sheepish to own up to because the grumpy part of me wants to stay mad at how annoying the process of learning was. “Oh so you want me to stop eating all that’s delicious in life like sugar and wheat and meat and cheese because of a chronic disease?! Talk about adding insult to injury, body! Thanks a lot.” Now a year and half later (after much, much sniveling) and I feel healthier and actually excited (cue sheepish look) about living a healthier lifestyle. I feel a bit embarrassed because I used to be the sweet-tooth queen and now I’d choose a bowl of oatmeal over a stack of cupcakes.

You want to hear another batch of crazy (oatmeal over cupcakes?! uh-huh)? When I was living in Atlanta my favorite thing to do was guilty Target shopping. You know where you tell yourself, oh I’m just going to pop in just to look and then leave $100 poorer with a designer-collaboration outfit, two new lip glosses, Method floor cleaner, and a festive utensil jar.

Well, I don’t do that any more. And it’s not just because there’s no Target equivalent in the UK (I could force Primark to be Target’s doppleganger if I squint real hard and look sideways). And it’s not because I don’t get hit by the compulsive shopping bug every once and a while. What’s changed is 1) I don’t have the space to put an extra utensil jar and 2) I’ve learned more about how unethical a lot of shops are.

If you are a long-time reader (hello, you!) you’ve heard me talk about #2, so I’ll stick to #1 for a minute: lack of space to put impulsive buys.

Exhibit A: Our shared wardrobe.

Small-wardrobe

Matt and I fit all of our clothes in this and a shared dresser. Erm, obviously Matt hogs most of the space (cough, cough).

Exhibit B: Make-up storage

minimalist-makeup-storage

This biscuit tin and tea cup hold all of my make-up and most of my skin products. I’ve tried to reduce the amount of products I think I need and have been slowly replacing my chemically make-up with more natural alternatives. Next up? Home-made deodorant. I know that’s a bit cringe-worthy, but anything that might be healthier for my body, I’ll give it a go. Aren’t you glad I live in a cold climate?

Exhibit C: Our Kitchen (corner in our) Family Room.

small-room

You can’t add more stuff to a kitchen that’s basically your couch’s side table.

I never meant to become a minimalist. And I’m not really. I think a real minimalist would poo-poo my unnecessary decorating or some bits and bobs I keep on the shelves because it makes me feel like I’m Emily Henderson. But generally, Matt and I kinda sorta are minimalists. If we buy something, a new shirt for instance, we’ll give another piece of clothing away to the local charity shop. There just isn’t room in that dinky wardrobe for more stuff.

And our kitchen corner? We have just the right number of pots and pans that we need and no more. Everything we have gets used and used a lot. The thing is (cue sheepishness again), I like it. I really like it.

There are days when I bemoan the fact that I wear the same clothes over and over again and don’t look like my former fashionista self. But I like knowing every single item of clothing I have. It feels liberating compared to my former self who would walk into her closet (walk-in closets?! what are those?!) and get overwhelmed by choice. Maybe I was never a true fashionista to begin with because I know a lot of stylish ladies love expressing themselves through their clothes. I would get confused instead of creative. A quasi-uniform always sort of appealed to me.

It’s shocking to find out that as a former shopping-happy, Louboutin-yearning, cake-devourer I could become a quasi-minimalist, gluten-free vegan who almost happily chooses chamomile tea over a Pumpkin Spice Latte, all in the space of two cranky years.

p.s. Did you guys notice how I dropped in those outfit pics at the top of the post like I was going to talk to you about fall layering? Thanks for sticking with me this long if you’ve made it down here. Instead of layering tips, I gave you cranky change and minimalism. Don’t hate me. Cath will make it up to you with a Give-away post tomorrow!

p.p.s. If you want some true minimalist inspiration and how-to, read about Emily’s 30 Day Minimalist Challenge on Spatial Drift and Esther and Jacob’s 100 Days of Less Challenge.

——–

Dear Cath,

Sheesh, I was long-winded in this post. Did you make it through all that? What do you make of this whole minimalist thing? I think you would slip into this groove much more elegantly than me. When we were teenagers and early 20ers I felt like I was the one that always bought lots of crap and you were always on the look-out for nicely made, quality items. Maybe we are both quasi-minimalists at heart? Sacre bleu!

Miss you like mad and wish it were Christmas already so I could see your face minus a pixelated Skype window.

Love you like I used to love cookies and now love oatmeal,

Lar

Happy Friday: Video of Our Italian Villa

Just a quick post today. I’ve been meaning to share this video ever since I got back from Italy. It’s a bit long, but you’ll really get a sense of how beautiful and amazing the villa was. Troy and I take turns being the tour guide and you’ll see Lar about halfway through.

We rented the villa from the Landmark Trust and it was such a wonderful experience that I can’t image traveling anywhere in Europe and not staying at a Landmark Trust site. Lar included some photos of the villa in this post.

Enjoy and have a wonderful weekend!

Dirty Ego Exhibit

DIRTY3

A few months ago Corey from The 2econd Floor reached out to me to see if I wanted to be in an exhibit called Dirty Ego. The photographs in the exhibit capture “good people doing bad things.” My bad thing? Murder by poison! Muwahahahahaha

I spent a few hours one afternoon with Corey and photographer Leah Roth getting the perfect murder-by-poison photo.

Dirty Ego photographer Leah

Corey and Leah were awesome to work with. I was so nervous because I felt so out of my comfort zone, but everyone was really sweet.

I felt silly in my outfit and kept trying to pull down the crop top the whole time! It’s pretty far from my style, but it was actually really fun to wear for the shoot because it made it easier to act like someone I’m not (i.e. a murdering, trashy housewife). My outfit consisted of my own Paige Denim short shorts, a cropped tank Corey found at Pacific Sun, and my super high Simple Vera nude heels.

Dirty Ego hair

Beth Corbley of Bloome Bar did my over-the-top make-up and was so encouraging – she put me at ease immediately.

Troy and I went out to eat at The General Muir right after the photo shoot. I changed back into my regular clothes, but didn’t remove my make-up. I got a few stares, but for the most part it was kind of fun wearing crazy make-up out in public. I’m usually too lazy to apply more than eyeliner and blush when I go out.

dirtyego makeup

In addition to the photo that’s going to be in the exhibit (which I haven’t even seen yet!), we took some mugshot photos for the promo (see the first photo of this post). I was supposed to look like I didn’t care that I got caught poisoning my husband, but I think I look drunk instead 😉

Dirty Ego mug shot

If you’re in Atlanta on Oct. 26, stop by Mint Gallery for the opening party of the exhibit – Corey and Leah deserve tons of support for all of their hard work! I can’t wait to see the final photos. Hopefully I’ll see you there!

______________

Dear Lar,

What do you think of my outfit? Did you ever think your twin sis would be wearing a crop tank with a giant leopard face on it? Let me tell you, it took a lot of work trying to suck in my stomach for the whole photoshoot!

Do you want to fly into Atlanta for the opening of the exhibit? Please?! Well, a girl can dream. I suppose I can wait until you come home for the holidays. Even though I just saw you last month it feels like we haven’t hung out in ages!

Miss you as always!

xoxo, Cath

I’m a Fashion Fraud

It’s true. I’m a fashion fraud. Actually, I should really say style fraud, but I like the alliteration better.

Pinterest has helped me come to this conclusion. Let me explain.

I like the outfits in the following three photos. All three are comfortable, work appropriate, not too boring, and are pulled together. But here’s the problem, none of them represent how I see my style – at least not my ideal style.

fashion fraud one
Marc by Marc Jacobs sunglasses • old cardigan from a local boutique • So Worth Loving tee (read more about it here)• Club Monaco necklace • Limited skirt • Sole Society shoes

fashionfraudtwo
Fantas Eyes sunglasses • dress worn as a top from a stall in London • Asos lace skirt (now on sale in coral) • Dolce Vita sandals

fashionfraudthree
Phillip Lim for Target top • second hand Derek Lam jacket • Spotted Moth pencil skirt • BC Footwear wedges • Longchamp bag

What’s my ideal style? If you take a look at my Style Inspiration Pinterest board, it looks something like this:

A lot of menswear inspired pieces, minimal patterns, lots of neutrals, structured pieces, tailored pants, and mostly black shoes. I have some of these items in my closet, but they’re few and far between. Which leads me to ask, why do I end up buying items that don’t reflect the style I want?

After some thought, I’ve come up with a couple of reasons:

1. Impulse purchases – I find that I’ve done more of this with so many designer collabs and seemingly never-ending online sales.
2. Lack of focus – A lot of times when I’m out shopping I have a vague idea of what I need (another pencil skirt, a blouse for work), but nothing specific.
3. Laziness – I tend to wear the same outfits over and over again because when I get up in the morning I don’t have the creative energy to think of something different. Also, menswear inspired pieces like oxford shirts and tailored trousers usually require some sort of ironing or planned out trips to the dry cleaner.

In a perfect world, I would give away almost all of my clothes a buy everything on my Keep Fall 2013 Shopping List.

Keep Fall shopping list

But in reality I have very little money budgeted for clothes. So, here’s my plan:

1. No more impulse purchases. Duh. I’m going to unsubscribe to all those shop e-newsletters so I won’t get tempted to buy items randomly online.
2. I have a list of specific items I need (well, want) on my phone’s notepad. So next time I just happen to find myself shopping, I can stick to what I really need/want. I got this idea from Hilary Rushford.
3. I’m going to stop being lazy! Just kidding. That’s impractical – sitting on the couch watching TV is just too enjoyable. But I’ve started using Dryel and it’s made my life much easier – and more affordable.
4. Using Keep.com has been really helpful because it notifies me if any of my items I’ve posted go on sale.
5. Be more deliberate about how I spend my money – this applies to clothes and everything else. I go through periods where I’m really good at sticking to a monthly budget and then there are those other times – like when I travel – that my budget just goes out the window.

I’ll keep you posted on how well I stick to my plan. Hopefully you’ll see some evidence of change in upcoming blog posts.

What about you? Am I the only who has this problem of real style versus ideal style? I feel a little ashamed that I’m a style blogger and am now just realizing my vision doesn’t match my reality. Leave a comment, I can’t wait to read your thoughts!

Dearest Lar,

You’ve been much better at buying clothing items that you need and walking the talk of ethical fashion. I know some of that has to do with your limited closet space, but I still find it so admirable. Also, you’re able to save up for things like a pair of Ferragamos where I’d be pushing it to save up for a pair of Payless boots 😉

I feel like I had a better weekend than usual because I was able to Skype with you twice!

Love you so!

Cemeteries, Skeletons and Stretchy Pants

Edinburgh-cemetery

Edinburgh-castle

I didn’t think about this at the time these photos were taken, but I hope it doesn’t weird you guys out that I look so cheerful in a cemetery. I know headstones and buried bones are morbid, but I’ve always been a sucker for old stone (Cath too — she just was partying at a cemetery in Decatur a few weeks ago). If they are in the middle of the city like this one in the pics, they are beautiful, serene green spaces tucked into bustling urban life. This particular cemetery is just below Edinburgh Castle — a pretty darn good view if you are going to rest your bones anywhere for eternity, eh? (Sorry, too morbid again?). And I do enjoy reading headstones and thinking about what those people living in 1830 in Edinburgh must have been like.

Even if you still aren’t a fan of tip-toeing around burial plots, doesn’t it get you into the Halloweeny mood?! It makes me want candy corn and caramel apples, and to smell bonfires crackling.

Since our two year stint in the UK began, it seems more and more people are embracing Halloween. Nobody knows what candy corn is (or Milk Duds) and it’s still sometimes tricky to find pumpkins, but there are more decorations this year than the previously. Just look at these at our favorite local, FYUL. Martha would be proud!

Re: the stretchy pants. I’m afraid Cath will continue to have to be the lone fashion inspiration on this blog. Apart from having a teeny tiny wardrobe these past two years, I’ve also discovered the joys of leggings and jeggings! Those black stretchy things that even at their peak of trendiness a few years ago made onlookers feel ambivalent at best and like they got a dose of TMI at worst.

But I’ve embraced leggings and their pants-pretending cousins, jeggings, whole-heartedly. My abdominal area is still not quite back to normal after my surgery 10 weeks ago, and an elastic waist band feels like a gentle hug rather than a corset like my skinny jeans do. And they are perfect for layering cosy sweaters and tees. If you are worried about a TMI situation occurring (or is that me just being paranoid?), layer longer tees under your shorter sweaters or blouses.

Dear Cath,

I’m so sorry you’ve been dealing with this nasty virus right when you are meant to be in NYC! I wish I could be with you to give you chicken soup and then fly with you to your conference. I’ll be thinking about you all week and sending you lots of healthy, happy vibes from Edi!

Love you like candy corn loves Oct. 31,

Hello Fall

So I might have been a bit premature about saying goodbye to summer in the last post since the highs have been in the 80s this week. I just so badly want it to feel like fall right now! I know, first world problems and all that. . .

This past weekend, the weather was perfectly crisp in that almost-fall-in-the-south kind of weather. Troy and I took our dogs for a quick walk to our local doughnut shop.

Fall outfit dog walking

Revolution Doughnuts is walking distance from our house and is always packed on the weekends. On Sunday I got a latte and pumpkin spice doughnut. FYI, for those of you in the Atlanta area that are vegan, a lot of Revolution’s cake doughnuts are vegan. For you non-vegans, everything at Revolution is delicious – no matter whether or not they have animal by-product in them – yay butter!

I’ve lived in Decatur for almost a decade and tend to take the small-town feel for granted. Can’t everyone walk to a local doughnut shop on the weekend?! But ultimately, I know how lucky I am. I know all my neighbors and I live 6 miles east of a large city (hello Atlanta).

Speaking of large cities, I’ll be in New York City for a few days next week (work related, not blog related). If you’re in the area, let’s meet up! I love meeting up with my blogger friends and already am planning to meet Diane from Snapshot Fashion in person – finally! Just email me at asiancajuns at gmail dot com.

Dearest Lar,

Do you remember the very first day we arrived in Edinburgh on Jan. 2, 2004? We dropped our luggage off at our hotel and walked the entire city, well at least most of the city. That was such a magical day. Exploring an amazing city together. Little did we know that we would totally fall head over heels in love with the Scots and the city AND that you would call it your home 8 years later.

I always remember that day and am reminded of how well we explore cities together. I wish you were coming to New York with me next week. I know we’ve been to New York together, but it’s been years! I think the last time we visited together, American Apparel had just opened up its first east coast shop. How young we were – so naive!

Who knows, maybe the next time we visit New York together, the federal government will be functional again! I kid of course 🙂

Hope you’re having a smarvelous week!

xoxo, Cath
