Would You Wear A Baseball Cap?

There are some girls who can rock the sporty look, but I’ve never been one of them. Most likely because I’m afraid of spherical objects hurtling toward me (George-Michael Bluth back-turn anyone? That’s how I respond to a game of catch). So I’ve always shunned hats that relate to athletics and kinda associated them with suburban dads-wear — not usually a look I go for either.

And then Acne put their models in unbranded black caps a few seasons ago and this season J.Crew topped off their embroidered work-wear with one. So back in the summer I bought a cheapie version and pulled it out for the first time while I was traipsing around propaganda architecture in Munich.

What do you guys think? Baseball cap fans or no? I haven’t worked up the gumption to wear mine indoors yet (I kind of feel silly and like I have blinders on) or at work, but it’s handy outdoors with our rainy/snowy Scottish spring.

Dear Cath,

Remember we bought those together? Have you worn yours yet? We should do a twin take and I promise to wear something more interesting than my puffer coat and Cos boots! We should do it soon because, blink, and you will be in the middle of too-hot-for-hats Atlanta spring/summer. I don’t even remember what that feels like any more: thick, humid, pea-soup air. Maybe you need a nice cool break in Edinburgh, huh? I promise cool weather in the middle of July!

xoxoxox,

Lar

p.s. Remember how we used to make fun of the guys in high school who wore perfectly molded baseball caps? I eat my words, 17-year old self!

  1. Dearest Lar,

I’ve worn my hat a couple of times, but like you, I haven’t done too much indoor wearing. Yes, let’s do a twin take soon! A black hat will definitely not feel great in the Atlanta summer and yes, I will need an Edinburgh cool down. I’m going to play the lottery and see if I can win some monies to come visit you in June, July, (August is Italy), September etc. . .ok?

Also, did I mention how great you look? You’re such a stylish tourist!
    xoxo, Cath

  2. You look adorable in that cap, Lar! My head is ginormous, so it’s hard to find hats that won’t make my head hurt, but I used to wear baseball caps back when I was going through my tomboy stage in high school! I probably still have some stored away in the depths of my closet!

    1. Thanks so much, Laura! Oh and my noggin is huge too, that’s why I never wear headbands — they either don’t fit or I get a handband headache after just an hour of wear. You should totally pull your caps out of storage — if anyone can make them look good, you can!

  3. I still love ball caps. Put my hair in a ponytail and throw on a cute cap. Great for the sun. Plus, there are some really cute ones out there. I get one when I travel somewhere new. It’s fun to look over them and remember great vacations:)

  4. I do NOT have the right kind of head, or hair, for this look. IF (and that’s a big if) I can get the cap on my huge head, it squishes my super thick hair down and forces it out to the side so it’s wider than ever. At an actual ball game, I’ll wear one with a ponytail, but that’s it. There’s just no way for me to make this look cute.

    1. Stacy, I totally know what you mean. I have a huge head too (Cath and I both always wear L in hat sizes) and I have quite pouffy hair. The sort of ironic thing is in order for me to wear a hat I have to straighten my hair — aren’t hats supposed to be for the times when you don’t want to faff about with hair tools? So it really isn’t the most practical solution — fashion never is, harumph.

What if you knitted a cap, Stacy? You could totally rock that look!
