I Love Atlanta But Not Wedding Count Downs

And it’s probably fairer to say “melt-down” rather than “count down.” Have I mentioned that I’m getting married at the end of this month? This teeny wedding is causing me more heartburn than I care to relate here. I’m also a little nervous about, you know, getting married. To be clear, I’m not nervous about my man or being legally tied to another human being, but the fact that I’ll be A Wife this time next month freaks me out a little. A lot-tle, actually.

So, I hope you don’t mind that this post will be wedding-talk free. In fact, you should enjoy it because it is probably the last post in the next three weeks free of wedding updates. By the end of March you’ll all just be like “get married already, Lar, and shut your pie hole about it! Sheesh!!”

This is what Cath and I did this weekend when I was pretending that I didn’t have other more pressing things to attend to:

Took a tour of some gorgeous historic apartments right in the heart of Atlanta:

Danced outside the apartment building on Peachtree St.:

(Thanks for the photos Troy and Lena!)

Ate cookies at (a replica of) Robert Burns cottage:

Long-time readers know that Cath and I are nuts about anything Scotland. What are the chances that our “home” town of Atlanta would have the only replica of Burns’ home?! A bit of Scotland just 20 minutes south of our front door(s). It has been the home of the Burns Club of Atlanta since 1910! Sadly, we weren’t inducted into said club even though we tried to explain our Scotophile enthusiasm, but they did take us for a tour inside (usually visits are for club members only).

How did we make it inside this tartan-festooned club and the swanky apartments of yore? Phoenix Flies of course! Presented by the Atlanta Preservation Center every year, they offer free (FREE! – my favorite word) tours around the city every day through March 20. Cath and I hope to hit a few more tours before my wedding.

So how was that for a wedding breather?

Thank you so much for all the sweet comments about my engagement photos! You guys made my week!

We apologize if we are slow with commenting and emails in the forthcoming weeks. Apart from my self-centered wedding brain, Cath is applying to grad school and slammed with work, and my bf fiance is defending his dissertation this week (woohoo- go, Matteo!!!). Do keep in touch though! We love reading your comments even if we can’t get back to you as soon as we would like.

Hope you had a gorgeous weekend, readers!!!

  1. wow i can’t believe you’re getting married already. just stay calm.one thing i learned, it’s not worth getting frazzled over. even though you want your wedding to be “perfect” there really is no such thing. gotta roll with it!
fyi, i can’t wait to see your wedding pics! you BETTER post them!!!

  2. Looks like a great weekend! That architecture is so lovely.

Also, I was nervous about the whole marriage thing, too, and honestly it’s WONDERFUL. Absolutely the best decision I’ve ever made. It’s sounds so cliche, but it makes you closer. You’re tied together now, but not in the same way. It’s absolutely incredible. I’m so happy for you.

    xoxo

  5. Wow, the big day’s right around the corner! It’ll be like one of those ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ moments but I’m sure you’ll be able to relax and have fun being a newlywed! And it looks like you guys are enjoying your time out as well – so jealous that we don’t have something like that where I am.

  6. I love those cool old clubs. In sydney there’s the Royal Automobile Club which is really old and exclusive and has a beautiful looking building. I don’t even have a car but I want to join the club so I can go to dinner in the fancy building!

  7. I CAN’T WAIT! I CAN’T WAIT!

Also, I get to see you next month, and you will be married! Yea!

WE need to start planning our outing.Food and fashion needs to be involved!

  8. Oh my goodness, it’s sooooo soon!!

Loved this post, the shot of the staircase is beautiful, historic buildings are just so gorgeous. You guys looked like you had fun having non-wedding related fun haha!

Also yes, the chocolate steamed bun! I couldn’t believe my eyes either and had to announce to the other ladies that this was not in any way traditional just in case they thought otherwise!!

  9. i was so behind on reading your blog, so i am all caught up! a few things:

    1. being married is awesome!
    2. your engagement photos are lovely!
    3. i used to live/work right around the corner from the wigwam- right after they had finished the building. i used to always think “what the heck is that place?!” i’m also pleased to hear that lotta fruita is still there. the neighborhood needs it- the place that was there before closed, plus, they have yummy fruit cups.

  10. If it helps you any, I was terrified of getting married as well. But things seem to have worked out pretty well since that day in (gasp!) 1982.

  11. I’m ashamed to say the only thing that comes to mind when RObert Burns comes to mind is “Oh my luve is like a red red rose.” I really should know more. And 20 days!!! (well, less now!!!) that is just absolutely exciting!

  12. Congrats! I had a blast helping my sister plan her wedding- it was pretty DYI and having the farmers market in Atlanta was great for flower deals! I never knew about these historic tours- I will have to check some out this weekend- P.s.–I love your blog and getting great info on events in the Atlanta area!
