On the last full day we were in NOLA we took a short road trip to Plantation Country (the area between New Orleans and Baton Rouge) and visited two of the many plantations that are open to visitors in that area.
The first stop was Oak Alley Plantation – probably the most well known and most-filmed-at plantation in Louisiana with over a quarter mile canopy of 300 year old live oak trees. I suppose it looks like Gone With the Wind‘s Tara, but to me it looks like the home in the film version of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof – too bad Paul Newman wasn’t around.

Laura Plantation was our next stop just a few miles down the road from Oak Alley. Although Oak Alley perfectly played up the Antebellum lifestyle (the female tour guides wear hoop skirts), Laura Plantation was my favorite by far. It was a Creole plantation, which means the family lifestyle was a bit more colorful than its Anglo Saxon counterparts. If you ever are in the NOLA area, definitely stop by Laura Plantation – it’s well worth the money.

The last two days I took to wearing jeans and suffered through the 80% humidity because I found that NOLA mosquitoes loved to bite me – 50 bites on my legs alone! So instead of cute summer dresses, my uniform became t-shirt and jeans – I know, I know, shameful for a fashion blogger.

Madewell t-shirt, Bitten by SJP jeans, Dolce Vita sandals.
I think Lauren wore the perfect plantation-visiting outfit: a cute summer dress to keep cool and boots to stay dry while walking around the marshy grounds. For some reason she didn’t get nearly as many bug bites as me. I think it’s because I drink twice as much coke as she does.

Dress from Rockit in Decatur, Tarjay boots and purse from Jackie’s in NOLA.
And for those of you who would like to see a list of all the places we visited, click on the link below to see my NextStop.com NOLA guide. Enjoy!

September 25th, 2009 at 8:24 pmLOL – how ironic that the jeans you wore are “bitten” by sjp . don’t worry, I get bitten ALL the time. I blame it on my blood-type. O+ the universal donor…yes even to mosquitoes. sigh

September 25th, 2009 at 8:34 pmGreat photos, both here and on NextStop. I am inspired for my trip. Thank you especially, Lauren, for helping me over my last-minute-trip-jitters. Who got the shot of Jackson Square? Beautiful.

September 26th, 2009 at 2:34 amOh wow. I’d love to see either of these if I ever got to visiting the US again. Mosquito bites are the worst. I’m surprised you didn’t brave mosquito repellent so you could wear your dress!

September 26th, 2009 at 10:24 pmFunnnnnn! Have you ever seen the TV show “True Blood” or read the books? The books are rather atrociously written, but the show is pretty good (especially season 2. Season 1 is a doozy). I’ve always wanted to do a Sookie Stackhouse tour, if only out of ridiculous curiosity. P.S. You can watch the show at Project Free TV. For some reason, I can’t put up the link on your comment page, but if you google it, it’s the first link. Also, Lauren can catch up on all her “Mad Men” episodes there, too.

September 27th, 2009 at 6:27 amAh mosquitoes. Sometimes I fantasize about them disappearing, but in the end, their absence would probably bring on the end of the world…and jeans and a t-shirt is probably one of my favorite get-ups for the fairer sex…
ps. China and mosquitoes go together quite well…just be forewarned

September 28th, 2009 at 12:37 amOh the plantations homes are beautiful, I love the terrace you and Lar are standing on. And I don’t blame you one bit from hiding your skin from those nasty bugs. You’re still fashionable anyway! You’re right though, I think they smell/sense the sugar. S loves coke and he gets bit like crazy. I drink water mostly and still get bit but not as bad.
